CELL in PS3 is theoretically almost 2X as fast as XCPU.

Anyway her is a pic of KZ. Notice it looks nowhere near what UE3 could do.

Are you kidding? Do you see one polygonal corner? Anywhere? Take a look at UE3 characters. Even with normal mapping, they are nowhere near as detailed as these characters. I highly, highly doubt that this is anything more than an offline-render. Running on 6800U SLI, maybe 20 fps. 60FPS? No way.

There's just less detail overall than GOW characters. Look at this screen, the lighting is just plain flat. The leve of detail on that guys arm on the left points to CGI.

Err from that picture, if anything that looks way better than anything i've seen running on UE3. That pic is from the video they showed and the video itself looks way beyond anything that's been shown on UE3 in terms of action on screen at once.
That's why many people think it was prerendered.

Was there supposed to be some "very big surprise" at the end of the conference? Or did they mean at the end of E3?

What could it be. Price? Launch date?
Was there anything about the launch date? Is the big surprise that they're launching 2005!?!?! Even before xbox360?!?!?!??? Are they going to do it the Apple style!!!!?!?!??!?!?!?

We must be seeing different pics then.

Uh, no.

Uh, no what?

No regarding there being less detail and flat lighting. KZ is easily on par with UE3 if not much better.

I'm talking about the lighting in that pic compared to the lighting in the KZ demo. It doesn't jive. ;)

Killzone having less detail(ed characters) than GoW :?
Depends on what kind of detail you're looking for, true GoW characters seem to have more all kinds of dingeldangel attached to them, while KZ characters have armouir with less accessories and smaller more realistic design weapons etc..
But Killzone characters have better, more detailed haircuts
And I think they are still more detailed, polygonwise and fine detailwise.
Not jsut more detailed in the exaggarated bright colored bold textures and übermassive scifiweapons and ridiculous armours.

I think that's where PC Engine is getting confused. He's comparing a KZ scene in a dusty street with UE3 shots done with high-intensity lighting.

I agree. The level of detail on the arm def. points to cg. Looks at the felt surface of the arm. Have you EVER seen that much detail in even a single character demo (ex. Ruby, or Nalu)? The polygon count in that arm ALONE is more than the UE3 character.

Point to notice. You referenced me to the UE3 shot as evidence of lighting. You know what I noticed? A realistically detailed character for a next-gen game. But look at the head. Notice the low polygon silhoutte corners? Notice the occasional hard-edge in the arms? Look at the material quality. I mean it looks fantastic! But also realistic. Sony seems to want us to think that we will suddenly be going from 3 3000 polygon normal mapped characters on screen in a limited, indoor env. (aka in doom3), to 15 50,000 polygon characters in a huge, detailed city scape with what looks like 8x AA at 1280*720? I hope that those who believe this stuff is real-time will not be dissapointed with the final game. I'm sure it will look great, but don't expect miracles.

edit: By the way, speaking of Ruby, these characters look on par with Ruby. Just a reminder, but Ruby consists of 80,000 polygons. A X800xt can render her along with 2 other characters on screen in a relatively low-polygon enironment at 60fps. You expect double the graphic horspower will yield an exponential jump in poly counts? Yikes!

I know the mods are as busy as we all with E3 info, but shouldn't some action be taken before this thread too turns into xbox360 game looks better than PS3 game.

Or could we be so civiliced as to moderate ourselves without mod intevention?

Personally I thought KZ3 was definitely more striking graphically than GoW. It must be the near pornographic contrast in GoW's HDR lighting that's drawing people's attention away from the lower polygon counts.

Anyhow GoW is a showcase Xbox 360 title simply because UE3 eclipses mostly everything else on the console, but seeing as how Tim Sweeney actually demoed UT2007 on PS3 in real-time, my excitement over the GoW clips has been deflated somewhat.

BLOODY HELL!

Did you guys see in the conference video, the demo where they show the yellow and red leaves, there's millions of them! all with wind physics applied...

PRETTY!! :D

Do like i do, divert the attention to something else. :D

Yeah that was pretty interesting especially the comment on how each leaf could have its own sound channel. I highy doubt CELL could generate 1 million individual sound channels. Sounds farfetched to me and just adds to the smoke and mirrors.

Wow, Sony know how to put on a good show. :D

I recommend everyone watch the full 2hrs conference video that is being streamed here.

javascript:launchGSL("/live/streame...press_e305.asx&pid=927750", "", 718, 500)

If this is some indication of what the next generation holds it is pretty exciting stuff.

Some people seem to be a little disappointed that the PS3 is only twice as powerful as the Xbox360. Considering there is only going to be 5 months between launches, I think this is quite amazing.

Here are some of the things that excited me.

Spring 2006 launch date. (They did not specify Japan, does this mean it might launch in the US at the same time?)

Blu-Ray drive.

1080p resolution. (I'm glad I only have a 480p capable display and have held off buying a crappy 720p display. 1080p is the only way to go.

Two simualtanous 1080p outputs over HDMI. Great for two player gaming, no more split screen. You can use the second output to drive a computer monitor with additional info. All the arguments for the DS are just as valid here.

Always on broadband connection, hopefully Sony will keep it's service free.

Built in Wi-Fi

7 controllers over Blue Tooth (What happened to the multi-tap revenue stream?)

Memory Sticks

Connectivity with PSP

Cool console design, especially the shiny black model, it will do well with my PSP.

Eye Toy demo with the water

Killzone footage

I'm probably still going to hold out for the full writerable Blu-Ray, HD recorder vision, but still a pretty impressive showing from Sony.
