Official GT5 discussion thread

Gran Turismo has always been a primarily European thing... We're the petrol heads which love our cars and racing games ;-)

The site even has the regional breakdowns for all the titles thus far, so it can be seen that GT5 isn't the only GT title to do much better in Europe than anywhere else.

I'm very please for PD and Sony with these numbers. It good to know that GT will still continue as the premier racing experience on PS.

I just hope the next iteration will be more focussed and have more emphasis on quality rather than quantity.

(and gimme back my GT4 career-mode UI )

Best cars in the world comes from europe, so it second nature to us to want the best racing game ever:)

breakdown of GT sales:

seems like GT5 sold over 6 million copies so far...which is good, right?
Good sales for a game, but they look weak by usual GT standards. GT sold 10 million on PS1. GT3 sold 14 million on PS2, although I don't know what the early sales and relative install base were like for a decent comparison. Perhaps GT had legs to get those extra 4 million units? Still, GT3 sold 7 million in NA vs. 5.75 million in EU, so GT5 shows a definite drop in interest over the pond.

All in all, my gut reaction is aligned with those who say the racing genre is on its way out.

It's still fairly early... I think it's still possible for GT5 to reach GT4 numbers with a smaller install base (price reduction, and future bundles etc.,). The racing genre may not be as popular as it used to be, but there are still a few racers that have good sales, like NFS Shift and Hot Pursuit, Burnout, Forza and of course GT5.

It's only been 6 weeks ! >_<

e.g., I remember in one interview/post, Insomniac mentioned that Ratchet and Clank sold half its lifetime units after it went Platinum (i.e., drop price)

OTOH, for racing genre, I think if the formula remains unchanged, it'd be harder to draw my attention. At least for GT5, they made the racing accessible and bite-size. The handling is unexpectedly fun too.

EDIT:
For the hardcore, they are doing car academy and other activities to invigorate the crowd. May be they should do more co-marketing with the car magazines.

looking at those numbers, GT5 will easily sell more than GT4 (its tracking quite a bit higher than it at the same period of time for a start)
It should finish up around GT3 numbers

though I agree the best days of racers are behind them, equalling GT3 is realtively selling worse (when u take into consideration the console market is bigger than it was 10years ago, ~20-30% bigger)

Just to get an idea 720p 2xAA is how Forza3 runs during gameplay with less cars and effects. Thats quite a feat for GT5 which can have up to 16 cars on screen, more detailed models (Referring to premium), dust/snow/rain effects on top of other stuff we cant actually see with our eyes such as wind pdirection etc.

It's quite amazing, and the sales numbers are decent but I can't help but feel that sony missed the boat letting kaz be so late. It's clewr hat they were willing to do anything it took to ensure that GT5 was the marquis Cell/RSX showcase, but imagine the impact even a lesser product may have had two or three years ago. At this point, clearly evverybody who already has a PS3 wants the game they bought one to play, but for those of us without, game's expensive, ps3's expensive, -- I definitely think they seem worth it after seeing how much went into it but momentum can be a bitch...

Oh sure, which is why I said I'd like to see how numbers compare with the other games. I don't know what sales of GT are like over the years, whether they have a long tail or a more dramatic spike. But if they are to hit 10 million in the next two years, that'd be two million a year, a little under 200k a month. Wouldn't it need to be charting quite a lot to hit those numbers? If GT drops off the top 20's, it'll probably be selling tens of thousands, which won't be enough. I vaguely remember GT3 sitting in the charts for ages and ages.

Gran Turismo games always had legs, just check how old games sold in last quarter.

GT5P sold 110k
GT4 sold 70k
GTPSP sold 130k

9 millions for GT 5 is certain.

Depends on which region those sales go to. The chart reflects lifetime sales. If PS2 is still selling actively in some regions today, the good games will follow too. We'll need a different set of numbers if you're interested only in the first 2-3 years of GT sales. And then there's the question of when Sony drops its price.

Borrowing cars is quite a nice feature. It saves you a lot of troubles looking for specific cars to match the entry requirements. And it saves you a lot of credits too.

1.07 is up. Track friends TT and Drift times. And for the peeps who exploit the birthday and car swapping thing, you're out of luck......

… Here’s the official list of what v1.07 (a 47 MB download) contains:

[Major Changes and New Features]
Friend Rankings: In Drift Trials and Time Trials, you can now display leaderboards that shows only your friends. While it was difficult before to locate your friends in the general leaderboards, this now makes it easier to compare your lap times and points with them.

[Fixed Issues]
- Performance points (PP), which is an index of a car’s overall performance, is now calculated regardless of your tire selection. You can now set performance point restrictions and tire restrictions separately when you race in a lounge.
- Fixed the issue where the performance of electric cars increased/decreased after a certain amount of driving.
- Downloaded replays from Seasonal Event Rankings can now be viewed properly.

[Other Changes]
- Cars worth over 1,000,000 Cr. (including gift car coupons) are now prohibited from being traded to prevent issues during the trading process. When lending and borrowing cars between friends, please use the car loan system.

I haven't started B-Spec yet.

I have a more important question to sort out. If you're Eyes on PSN, then who is Opposed ? We played MAG together last week late into the night. I messed up badly in that game.

I think I got your nicks mixed up again. Is concepticus-US Phil or PhilB ? :D

I'm still Eyes :)

Just start b-spec, create a driver and share it online for when you are not playing. Your driver will earn money and experience when he is used in other peoples races.

My driver went from lvl2 to 10 while I sleept :)

Good idea, I'll share mine.

I posted a time in the Mazda by the way, so anyone on my friends list can check if I'm on it. I wasn't driving a very fast Mazda by the way (and just an ok lap), so I should be around 5000th or so :D

Heh, sounds like multi-level marketing !
