Official GT5 discussion thread

The 2nd Jeff Gordon challenge is quite hard, I mean its hard cause the cars move so fast that even a slight loss in control means you won't be able to overtake the first car & I always loose some speed while overtaking the first two cars (the red car is stupid, always tries to bump & slow me down).

Yes, it's very subtle, which is kinda different from other challenges. And boy, the cars are heavy.

Also, I have a hunch the Thrustmaster wheel may be quite a bit better than Driving Force Pro. Read in Gaf that Logitech didn't want to upgrade their firmware to support GT5 better. If true, there may be noticeable gameplay differences.

Confirmed after playing a fair bit last night. Needs to be corrected.

Downshifting instead of braking (with none of the associated penalties of braking) is classic GT-style. If they took it away, all the old GT-diehards would complain that the physics aren't right. ^_~

Here's how I golded the Lotus test before I got my steering wheel, I had to turn the assists on of course or the car would go sideways under braking. I'll try sometime with my wheel and assists off. Please note the impeccable recording quality and technology in the video, it took 5 years to develop.

Nicely done.

That video also shows off one GT5's favourite ways to annoy you. Breaking way too early. Crash into them and you'll be disqualified.

I remember hearing that the Lamborghini Countash was such a terrible car to drive. I bought one to enter it in the Supercar Nostalgia Cup. It's great, very controllable even when it starts to slide a bit.

Polyphony Digital should get him as a tester:

… but don't change the game's personality. For newcomers like me, GT5's structure is helpful. For people who have played it 4 times, they probably are looking for something more specific and also different. If it's driving around in circles and point-to-point with realistic damages, I may not buy it. May be racing game sales have been tanking for a good reason.

And yes, I've been hearing raves about GT5 + wheel. I shall leap with a spanky new wheel regardless. ^_^

Being used to Forza, I use the triggger for gas/brake. (360 controls) A for upshift and X for downshifts. I wish the triggers had longer travel.

Yeah, that game (or anyway racing games on the 360 in general) has had a big impact on people's perception of how racing games should be controlled, just like the idiotic idea of putting shooting on the L2/R2 buttons instead of L1/R1, just because the 360's shoulder buttons are utter crap. Mind you, I don't fully disagree - the triggers on the 360 controller are definitely very good for accelleration and braking, but I had two issues with it:

- my hands cramped terribly for a looong time (I did get used to it eventually)
- I really don't like shifting with the face buttons (I shift a LOT ;) ). The R1 and L1 buttons on the DS3 controller are perfect for that.

This is also what is holding me back from changing to this way of playing on the DS3 - it's hard to change my ways, and not that much motivation to do so as I mostly play with wheel now (on both systems ;) ). If I were to change to using R2 and L2 for gas/brake on the DS3, then I would probably consider those cheap little trigger add-ons, they cost a $1 or so a piece and they really do help a lot.

Try to downshift the way it´s possible in racing games in an actual car.. the way we do it would tear everything apart.

I've never seen anyone do that ever in GT. All I've noticed (and always use myself) is that when you brake from a high speed to a low speed, it pays to shift downwards through all the gears - you'll brake a few meters sooner perhaps, not much more, but when you're going for gold, it helps. The thing is though - is that actually unrealistic? Reengaging the clutch / flywheel at a different speed level the engine is turning does seem to slow the car down, just as shifting with rev-matching tends to make you faster? (which is part of the point of heel-toe if I understand correctly)

Ouch, it's high end. $500 according to Kazunori's tweet translated here:

I'd like to know what aspect of NASCAR doesn't feel realistic and how does he know that. Regardless of whether it's realistic or not (I have no way of knowing), I find the NASCAR handling and feel awesome in GT5.

With a gamepad, I use R2/L2 for gas and brake and right stick up and down for shifting like a sequential shifter. Of course that's only when I'm too lazy to set up my wheel.

If PD talk to him, they'd be able to understand and thrash out their differences.

I don't think PD should change GT5 based purely on reviewers' feedback, but it's a good way to gain more perspectives. e.g., I personally like GT5 the way it is (many races, activities and cars), it's the polishing that needs more work. Listening to the hardcore players would be helpful to prioritize the features and expectation.

On hindsight, if PD goes for a highly polished 200 premium car race sims, then it would be useless to me. If recent racers (arcady or sim-y) didn't fare well in the market, going down that path may be limited.

More Kaz stuff:

- Update in early December to add configurable mechanical damage.
- Update in late December to add export save feature.
- Update for Credits and XP in online races to be done later.
- Youtube uploading not done do to memory problems. Still being considered.
- They want to improve the shadows
- No HUD option being added in the future. He seems to be promising it.

yay! at no grinding for F1 cars!

I posted those the 30th november, and he is tweeting again:

Oh dear ! That's definitely not for me then.

I've had no big problems with the UI, and frankly find it odd how so many reviews bash it.
True, selecting and finding a car that's fit for a race could be made easier and faster, but that's about the only thing that bugs me in the user interface. But that happens only if you don't have a suitable car yet in your garage, and you have to go shopping.
You do need to remember the requirements for the car, but usually there's just a couple of them that must be met, and I haven't had problems remembering those. Maybe I just have that little bit longer attention span than today's kids ;)
Many reviews also complain that the button use in menus is inconsistent. I think it's very consistent, O goes back in current category, and eventually over the 'Home' or 'exit' icon if you need to exit to home screen or main menu.
I have yet to dwelve deeper into the less frequently used menus such as museum and items and such, maybe there's more clutter there, but the main menus are very clear and reasonably fast to use, imo.

Going to a lower gear than you should in real life with lock/snap out the back end. This is missing in GT5. It's rather simple.

Once they add mechanical damage, this should damage the engine also (floating valves)

Depending on your drivetrain though right? You either immediately max-rev your eninge as you suggest below, but then you're going from high revs to much higher revs, and the power output doesn't have to change that much - in fact with the rev-limiter in effect, it may not at all, and much depends also on the car. Older cars, definitely. And they'd have to be FR, or when you do get down to a higher gear and the clutch is strong enough to grab the flywheel without braking, and you're making a turn. The power jolt won't snap out your back end if you're driving a straight line, a balanced 4WD setup, an FF drive car, etc.

@Rabit: the UI is a bit cluttered, but some early complaints I think stem from the fact that it accesses online in some parts of the menu, and as online wasn't keeping up, it was slowing the UI down. It got much better once they disabled some of that temporarily and upped the maximum concurrent connection count. The clutteredness of the UI also means you don't have to go very deep into menus most of the time. I personally have no complaints - the GT4 UI looked nice for instance, but it was a bit odd about how you traveled through the 'islands'.

Engine rev limiters can't do anything about mechanical overrev.

The menus seem painfully slow to me. Loading all the time. Granted I haven't played many console games in the last few years but this seems excessive.

For example, when choosing an event they should let you go to the dealership and filter for only the cars eligible for that event. I was pretty shocked to see that this was not an option.

Yes, they should do something like this. Right now they only allow us to go back to our garage, and filter our garage based on the event requirements.

I did not install the game to HDD. The simple transitions are somewhat sluggish. I remember KY mentioned that the system contacts the server even for menu navigation. I wonder what their plans are. It shouldn't be the case. May be we will know more about their online plans after the 2 patches are released.

If true that is absolutely unnecessary. I'm all for online integration but jeez.

I just had a happy thought. The next Gran Turismo will almost certainly be photorealistic. Hell GT5 would be if it ran on something like a Juniper.
