No European PS3 launch until March

Well, if it is about the games, and xbox360 does not have those games a person waiting for PS3 wants, there's little to do other than bring those games to xbox360.

A GOW might just not be something everybody wants or should want, while good looking and technically competent, in the eyes of many it might still be just another space marine shooter.
Halo3 is just another space marine shooter.
Forza 2 is just another driving game
etc... they're all among the best of their genres, but they aren't something you won't be getting a comparable enough experience on the successor of the console you played with last gen, and of which games you enjoyed and learned to rely there'll be plenty to choose from in the games catalog.

Another interesting, though very long term question is, how the next generation schedules will look like.

Microsoft has launched the X360 in november 2005. That suggests that if they hold on to a 5 year cycle then they'll release Xbox3 in the end of 2010, or maybe early 2011.
But that'd mean that the PS3 will only have about 4 years of shelf time as the most powerful and newest console. Sony will not be able to get their investments back in that time, but if they allow MS another 1 year advantage, or even more, then it may cost them their market leader status... And if the PS3 ends up ruling this gen, that will once again just encourage MS to launch the next Xbox at the same time.

I realise that it's a bit early to think about next-nextgen :) but nevertheless, this long delay will certainly have some serious consequences for Sony down the line.

I was thinking about this earlier this morning - The other option MS could take is aggresively release like Nvidia did and push for another 4 year cycle (but with hw backwards compat in 720 to enable devs/pubs to ease into the transition). This would obviously put Sony in a pickle as 1 year advantage is a tough loss but a two year window would get ugly. Then again devs would probably be in an uproar with ms if they did that but who knows ... maybe ms can make it worth their efforts.

Youve also got the best looking madden, the best looking FIFA, the best looking NHL07/2k, the best NBA Live/2k, the best looking Splinter Cell, the only place you can play them on Live! Theres still oblivion for RPG'ers.

So what is the genre thats missing exactly?

EDIT: And Viva Pinata for NucNavST.... ;)

I think the biggest question that comes out of today is if this is the last big surprise Kutaragi was talking about? ;)

No... the biggest question that comes out of today and the last six months of bad news is: How strong is the Playstation brand ? I'm sure both Sony and MS execs would be interested to know too (but not like this :) ).

Unfortunately like most things in life, we will have to wait for a few more months to know. Apple Computer suffered through 10+ years of non-performance, bad news and disappointments but its fans persevered (kind of scary). I don't think Sony is that strong, but we shall see.

I think we are underestimating how much PS2 can still do, it is still early days for new gen consoles. It is not as if all current console owners will suddenly think about purchasing new gen consoles, and this transitionary period will continue till the end of 2007 atleast or when new gen consoles start outselling old gen consoles on the regular basis. Sony still have the franchises/games, MS hasn't been able to make major dents in Sony's armour.

But the entire point is that you can't get hold of the successor of your console! If you want to play any driving, shooting, football, action, RPG or other game in HD this Christmas, then your only other option will be an Xbox360. What's more, there's a good chance that you won't be able to get a PS3 until summer 2007, especially if you live in Europe, unless you're willing to spend a lot of time and money... and many of the early 2007 games will be multiplatform.

So, unless you absolutely want to play Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Lair, GT-HD or Warhawk (what other exclusives are there?) then you'll be as content with an Xbox as with a PS3, and you'll even have some money left. The question is, do you want to wait another 6-8 months, or start to play now? :)

You forgot to say "Jump In." at the end... ;)

I didn't say it's missing a genre.
I meant if a PS3 person knows he can rely there being comparable experiences eventually.
Yes, I am talking about that "Promise of good games" as it is real, and it is what sells and it is what many trust and rely on.
That comment was ridiculed, but honestly, I don't see what's there to ridicule.
The consoles live on "promise" and outlook of the future, if you had a "promise" your console of choice had just mediocre games coming would you buy it? Are you continuing supporting your console of choice just because it has had a couple of ok launch period games, or are you still hanging on because of the promise of upcoming games?

Yeah, I know it sounded like MS ads :) - but really, this is the actual case now. And the average person can't delay his/her desires for too long, especially in today's western cultures... We'll soon know how big the demand actually is.

Y'all are coming at L-B the wrong way. You need to convince him that buying an XB would be the bad boy rebel thing to do. :p

Maybe youre right...

I wasnt picking on LB was I?

If they got enough of em.. I'll save an NTSC PS3 just for him!

Yes Laa-Yosh. This is the biggest question: Whether the Playstation brand is strong enough to sustain direct and early competition (even under holiday pressure).

If I were Sony, I will start a "Rain Check" campaign (with bundled goodies) this season for parents to buy half a PS3 for their kids. They will get the other half when their kids perform. Or something equivalent.

At this point I don't think the market is heavy with parents looking to buy their kids a 500+ toy. Parents looking to buy one for themselves on the other hand ...:D

Yeah i agree this is the reality now. MS got all they could ask for and more with their early launch, now they have to execute with software.

Theyre not off to a good start with the Forza 2 shots/news, imo. GoW is more important now than it was yesterday imo, and as I said in another thread (or was it this one), the most important game since Halo 1 for any system.

Hmmm, are blue-laser diodes user installable? :D

it will be for the entire family since you can watch movies, play games and supposedly do other activities too. Parents do use their kids as excuse to buy stuff *ahem*

hmm ... probably right but even if it bombed I think they would still be ok. remember there are quite a few titles showing up between now and the end of the year that will provide good entertainment on 360. It's an important title and like you said probably the most important since h1/2, but I think halo3 will have more riding on it next year.

Ok, I have been involved in so many flame wars with Sony fanguys -something that I eventually got tired of, I started a few- most of whom talked like barbarians of the lowest order. I don't regret those moments with nice -mainly xboxers- and not so nice people, though. I had fun and I look back on them fondly.

mrboo, well, technical draw, but Sony did it first.
