Am I the only one bothered by everyone & every site doing hardware comparisons etc before we even know the complete specs, even if some engineer supposedly slipped the 768 ops number etc?
Same here. People are very fast to jump to conclusions. Even tho I believe they are pretty close on everything, it would be nice if they actually had specs before they talked about them. People going off rumor really makes its kinda sad.

That was a speculation prior to Durango reveal as to why MS are aiming lower. The option for faster hardware 'refreshes' but virtualising the hardware gave MS the option to sidestep the traditional console lifecycle. They can introduce compatible hardware I think, but we'll have to see.

Probably. We know enough to be able to make comparisons, because the leak was a leak and not a wild guess, and MS won't have chenged anything from that. Certainly not substantially (50+ MHz bump?). Every bit of evidence points to the accepted HW format. There's no sane reason to question it at this point.

If they want to fully move to the cloud a few years from now there are clear advantages to somewhat prepare for that ...

I am going to guess NDA's are still in place, we just are not seeing big dev houses come out and talk freely like a bunch have done with the PS4.

I do really want to hear what Epic has to say, or Id for example. I imagine this will happen after E3 though.

Sony have been transparent with hardware, Microsoft should be too -there must be advantages to their design-.
They should focus more on games at E3, and know that they said what they wanted to say about the new TV capabilities, they should push features that cater to hardcore gamers.
As others said, the E3 is a huge opportunity to redeem themselves.
Overall it seems rather clear to me that the initial negative outcry regarding the focus on the TV can only be fixed during the E3, with games.
MS say games are essential to them. Let's see.

Not much they can do ....they have already castrated the hardware .

MS is a big player no matter what people think of the box, no point slating it just because it's not as powerful as another box. They will wait until sales prove it's a flop first.

Anyway, Rein has been on his twitter "loving" the TV stuff.

I've seen a lot of devs praising the PS4 right after the Sony event ... is there anyone doing the same for the XBone ?

Xbone lol, has that stuck now?

I like X1, sounds more experimental anyway!

It is interesting to watch the negativity going on, makes me think MS should have said at 15-minute intervals - "This is not the conference you are waiting for!"

I don't what the real damage will be if any, the TV features are neat but at the end of the day it may not deliver as intended or be marketed heavily. I use AIV more than anything, and these services keep getting better. I will be more than happy to keep using my current 360's for live/recorded TV content. It would be nice to remove these services from the paywall, as I don't see PS4 putting them behind one.

Some features I wanted - 360 being a games extender for the Xbox One, own one One, and stream anywhere in the house. Who knows, we have rumors of Smartglass allowing this, so maybe there is still an Xbox mini that will do this. What worries me is that Kinect would not be available in this scenario and that alone could break it.

Having a nice device like a Wii-U pad for off TV play, I would probably use this a bit to play late at night with headphones. 7" to 9" screen with all the current xbox controller ergo. Don't really care for the dual screen aspect, just the thought of 1080p gaming in this manner would be a dream.

After E3 we should have the full picture and really be able to look at all the features. Lots of questions remain on this side of things.

Why do I feel like MS pulled a Nintendo Wii U?
Lets see...Nintendo lost itself by making a console that is basically a PS360Wii with a tablet.

It doesnt give much reason for the PS360 owner to get it because there isnt much of a difference in terms of performance and games. These people wait for the next PS and XBOX instead

It doesnt give much reason for the casual to get it because the tablet is complicated whereas the Wiimote was not and games are either hardcore or not so different from Wii. The casual doesnt care to get better technology. The casual likes playing easy and fan games. He already has Wii and tablets

Nintendo is lost between harcore-casual. What is it trying to do? Offer a tablet-controller-motion control gaming experience? What am I an octopus? It doesnt do any of these any better

Now what MS did?

Another double personality device

A box that doesnt know who its target market is. The TV coach potato or the gamer?

A TV BOX is something the TV coach potato will want....well....can MS convince the TV coach potato to buy XBOXOne?
He wouldnt even care to look because he already has his solutions and the name XBOX alludes to a gaming device. It doesnt replace any of the existing TV devices in the living room. It needs them to communicate so that it changes the way you control your TV experience. By talking to it......FASCINATING. Yeah lets pay $$$ extra so I can talk to my TV. Why would he want to pay premium for that or for games?

The GAME BOX is something the gaming guy will want. Lets see...there is competition.....and the XBOXOne. What is the primary new feature on XBOXOne? TV viewing...because watching TV improves my gaming experience and I just dont have a clue yet how.
What else does it offer? A more powerful kinect....which I already tried and the excitement wore off? The gaming guy isnt interested much to pay premium for a TV feature. Its the games he is after.
And I am not even sure the casual gamer will pay premium for this device either.

And this will make it even worse for EU and other territories where the touted TV integrations cannot be experienced by almost none.

Actually MS knows exactly who the console is designed for....gamers...both new and old.

It's not gamers saying "screw the casuals". It's MS who's saying "screw the core gamers, they'll take what I give them". If they had any respect for their established base, kinect would be optional and the specs would be 50% higher.

Nah...they're including Kinect as standard because it's the foundation of their future vision....just like the HDD was standard on the original Xbox. Having it standard means it will become the main user interface going forward...an All In One entertainment device...hence Xbox One... Kinect is MS's version of Siri. No mouse, no controller, no keyboard, no touchpad needed just your voice and gestures.

As I said, that's not how the cameras from the Israeli company who's name I can't remember worked.

They had a global shutter which cut off the pulse ... if you have say a 10 ns pulse which ping/ponged for 5 ns and you close the "shutter" 10 ns after the start of the pulse then the sensor will see half the pulse (which can be determined through integration, with help of seperate results from measurement of a calibration pulse and background intensity).

They might not have used that particular technology though.

Microsoft used PrimeSense It used a near infrared emitter to cover the room in a known pattern of dots that was used to determine 3D depth. That's an oversimplification probably, but I think you get the gist.

They way you describe is very likely the way they do it. Then the sensor is basically just a regular CMOS sensor with global shutter.

Cheers

MS isn't ignoring core gamers to go casual. The difference between a 7850 and 7770 isn't a performance difference that distinguishes a hardcore PC gamer from a casual gamer. The XB1 isn't sporting IGP level graphics. If there are casual PC gamers sporting 7770s in their rigs in all likelihood its by accident not by design. There might be a point of MS catering to casual gamers if it brought Zynga out to show the XB1 version of Words with Friends. But MS brought out a bunch of titles with mainstream appeal, which shows the direction of the overall reveal. It was an effort to appeal to mainstream crowd not gamers like us. Thats whats E3 is for and is only 3 weeks away.

Yes, MS is trying to broaden the appeal of consoles in an effort to create a bigger market. That is actually a positive thing. Since everyone likes to bring the smartphone market when describing MS's intention and motivation, I will bring up this point.

The level of investment and performance growth we have seen in the mobile space would have never been possible by the limited userbase enjoying pre-2007 winmo and blackberry phones. The iphone and android with their mainstream user appeal actually changed the entire climate of the smartphone space. Now we have mobile devices that fit in your hand with performance relative to desktop PCs from early 2000s.

Furthermore, console gaming doesn't hold highend PC gaming back, it actually holds it up. Its the mainstream aversion to the cost of highend gpu hardware that holds PC gaming back. PC gaming actually benefits from the being an auxillary market to the console market. Its the console market that encourage the volume of $20-$50 million development budgets we see today. It does so because it has a bigger userbase of consumers willing to shell out for $60-$70 dollar titles.

The more mainstream adoption we see of consoles and the more willing these consumers are to adopt consoles at higher price points the more readily higher performance tech can be deployed in consoles. That would be allowed by console prices that can accommodate higher BOMs as well as greater benefit from the economies of scale. You aren't going to facillitate this strictly by games or it would have happen long ago. We live in the world where computing is being is applied from watches to TVs in an effort to expand upon their utility.

Having console manufacturers simply concentrate on the needs of gamers will probably only find us with someone else invading the TV space providing hardware that comes no where near the level of gaming performance offered by consoles. I rather have a bunch of casual buying $500 dollar consoles (offering highend gaming performance) using its TV services, playing Angry and/or a bunch of free to play titles. Versus pubs being even more encouraged to cater to 99c titles because everyone has ipad level hardware in their TVs or in their setup boxes. It would be ashamed if consoles were lost due to manufacturers' myopic vision and a concentration on such a narrow group of users while having one of the most powerful computing CE devices outside of PCs. Consoles in their traditional state are no different to the mainstreamers than a $3000 PC rig employing Titan cards that doesn't do anything other than game apps, is to your typical PC gamer.

Furthermore its highly unlikely Sony hasn't initialized steps to determine the feasibility of incorporating these features into the PS4. HDMI-in in a PS4 is probably no more difficult than putting a HDMI out in a 360. Its only a hardware revision away and early adopters can be persuaded with a Slim PS4. What MS has done will actually make defending the TV space easier for consoles.

That's great. So, I guess we will be seeing these sorts of cloud-based enhancements on PS4, as well. And since that's the case, Xbox One doesn't really have any technical advantages, unless you are interested in Kinect and other things tangential to gaming.
Absolutely, assuming Sony or the game developer is willing to pony up hundreds of thousands of servers distributed across the world so that the latency for any particular user is minimized. Gaikai has some of that, but their servers will be busy with much heavier workloads if their game streaming stuff pans out.
i'm not sure how technical that role is but his answers seem to understand it. point is seems a step above some marketing or know nothing bigwig (check that box) saying that type of thing.
Marc Whitten is quite technical. He would fully understand anything about the product that he would be willing to talk about.
Xbone lol, has that stuck now?
Seems that way. All credit to BRiT.

After e3 you will still be mad that you have to wait another 3-4 months before you actually get real game play in your hands.

That's really all it comes down to , people want the system now and not a few months from now. Anything other than having the system isn't going to fill that hunger.

I'm fortunate to be able to have other toys that are not gaming related to play with while I wait for Xbox One...not to mention a bunch of unfinished games as well as "to buy" games on 360. Speaking of games I just got RE Operation Raccoon City for $15 new..no tax..free shipping...lol. It sure pays to be patient.

They said they developed a custom CMOS because the tech they needed did not exist, but they didn't exactly elaborate on what tech they were referring to.

Basically the core gamer is having a hissy fit & acting like 3 year olds.

Tommy McClain

+1...Deep down (no not Capcom's new game) people who claim to be "core gamers" do so because it makes them feel special.

There's no such thing as a core gamer...that's just a stupid vague label that was made up to try and describe a certain type of gamer. Nobody actually knows what the true definition of core gamer is precisely because it doesn't exist.
