Killzone 2 pre-release discussion thread

Played through three times times now. I tried different tactics each time and was rewarded with different AI responses each time! Absolutely brilliant. The graphics are superb but it's little things like a static sky, bad water, and no feet that bug me and they're still there... But other than that I must say I am very impressed with this little taster. Far too short, but as they say, the best things come in small packages!

Off to give it another go and see how fast i can make it through this time only using the pistol.

I blew up the bridge by shooting at the explosive barrels next to the turrets on the right. I hope that there is an alternate method to completing such objectives instead of having to hunt for the right gun, if i'm only allowed to carry one primary weapon.

Those who played the MP, this restrictions doesn't carry over, right?

I didn't even know there was a rocket launcher for the bridge. I just shot at the barrels and boom

As for the controls, no issues whatsoever with me. They were perfect for me from the start. Playing with no HUD, or crosshair is just amazing. Also the AI is something I was not expecting. In the warehouse I came around a corner and ran into a HGH, he turned around, I freaked and ran and he started chasing, lol. I turned back around and meleed him. It was pretty funny, and I loved how each play through has been different regarding the enemies. I love shooting helmets off, or watching them die.

Went another few rounds with the demo. And I'm sort of addictive to it now that I got use to the controls. Still too short for my liking.

Play it with no HUD's and crosshair.

I played through the demo and thought I'd post some impressions. As others have mentioned, it's really short (took me only about 10mins). It did what it was supposed to though by giving me a good sense of what the game will be like. First off, I loved the first person cover system. I could see this being a very tactical shooter on the higher difficulty levels with the cover system playing a big role. Also, the animations where amazing to watch (just look at the troops getting off the VTOLs or watch them fire at the enemy from behind cover). With that said, the demo was really fun while it lasted. Ironically enough, the only thing that didn't impress me were the graphics. Some of the effects were nice but overall I thought it looked about on par with other games already out on consoles (Uncharted, Gears 2, etc..). Still, it's pretty much a day one buy for me.

Great looking game. Definitely the best overall looking game I've played, but the blurring from motion and depth of field actually made me start feeling sick. I've never felt sick playing an fps before.

Absolutely the worst feeling shooter controls I've handled on the console. I'm not particularly amazing with gamepads as I was a longtime pc gamer, but that weird acceleration sucks. You move the stuck subtely and the guy doesn't go anywhere, then all of a sudden he's turning way to fast. Felt very very herky jerky to me. Call of Duty 4 got it right and I'm not sure why anyone would try to change the formula. The cover system is weird. That's something I think i'd like after I got used to it, but it seems awkward to hold the trigger, push forward on the left stick and then aim. I think it would be butter if you just pressed the cover button once to stick. Maybe you can set it that way?

I hope that's not true me as well.

I'm very sensitive to motion sickness in FPS games. The demo should give me a good indication on whether I can stomach (pun intended) this game.

Acutally it makes sense to me. It seemed that more often than not Gureilla went for the "realism".
Realistically people don't put a rifle or a RPG launcher in their pistol pocket.
nor do you see anyone in the millitary carrying a M16 and a shotgun or sniper rifle running around.
Personally I like this choice of game design.

This equipment inventory design isn't necessarily realistic. It's just a game design they chose for balancing.

Not to derail things... but when I was an enlisted cav scout in the US Army, I used to carry at different times, a LAW + M16 or AT4 + M16 (LAW and AT4 are both rockets).

So, realistically, although you wouldn't put an RPG/recoilless in a "pocket" -- you can sling them on your back.

Heck. At one point, I even carried my own rifle and parts to a M2 .50 Caliber machine gun.

Have you tried the Alt 2 controls?

The only game where I ever had issues with controls is RE5...but I will keep that out of this thread. The default controls felt very good to me. I easily pop in and out of cover.

After checking out the first Killzone, I'm just so relieved that this one is even playable. How that pile of crap went on to sell over 2 million is just astounding.

Oh yeah, one thing that I noticed in the demo.
In the second part of the demo, "Stahl Arms Warehouse", try shooting the small red cans.

I've noticed that depending on where you shoot the second shot, the pressurized cans can explode in many different ways.

If you shoot at the cylinder side, it will go on to give off a solid jet of hot air, and blow up after a while (and the can will auto-adjust so that the air will shoot directly above the can, which makes sense if you think about it).
I tried to shoot at the base of the can and remarkedly it started to accelerate, ending up hitting other cans to produce more fireworks.

The details show the talent, in my opinion.

Played the demo twice, sad to see its not the whole level cause it gets really hectic later in this level when I played on a PSN event in my city.

I also found it a bit wierd that once in cover the guy doesn't stick to it, you have to keep L2 pressed, but guess we'll have to get used to it.

I must say the demo felt much better when I played it the second time :) ! I had lots of Ballet-of-Death kind of sequences this time as I barged into them. The difficul;ty option provided in the demo is pretty forgiving.

Also, the motion blur looks great. floor textures also look great. I had really hoped they had put the wholelevel in the demo, coz the fun starts later in the level. Gor a first level, it does show you some amazing stuff in the warehouse  ! That seems to be my favourite part. You have enough ammo to try out different deaths to the Helghast.

Do remember guys this the first part of the first Level of the game, and serves basically as a tutorial in the full game. You can't expect a super fight in it. Remember COD4 first level, you could walk through it like a song !
