Killzone 2 pre-release discussion thread

Since you were courteous enough to remind us that KZ2 is a Jin Roh clone and worse looking than Crysis on medium settings, maybe you could also do us the courtesy of pointing out the jagged edges in the screengrabs on the last page?

edit: seems as if I confused with someone else. My apologies for that.

How in the world is KZ2 a Jin Roh clone? Jin Roh wasn't an action movie, it was a drama about politics and being a member of an elite police unit. Is it because of the similarities the Helghast has with the Panzer Cops equipment in Jin Roh which in turn is based on the Wehrmacht? I suppose the gear the Helghast wear is inspired by the Panzer Cops gear especially the red eyes but that's the extent of it.

Edit: nvm I see this has been discussed in this thread and concerned only the gear they wear and was settled with an interview with a developer stating he was unaware of the movie when he designed the helghast (if you take him at his word).

Guerilla has revamped the Helghan look. They are more distinct now. Check out the different face masks belonging to different ranks.

The Helghan designs are more angular and yes, influenced by the WWII German corp.

I totally understand how Killzone 2 threw itself into a space of discussion that revolves around graphics, but I think one of the most convincing things about the game in terms of tricking ones eye to being realistic is the sheer authenticity of the animation on things like cloth, the soldiers movements, as well as environmental objects. It's the best I think I've ever seen, it's wonderfully done. Whether the graphics turn out to be the best on console ever or not, it's got the animation both procedural and not down to a science as well as art. Props to Guerilla.

Unfortunately the motion blur doesn't even look correct to be bullshot quality. The blur is on the whole model yet the legs aren't moving.

Yes they were. The Helghan is standing up from a crouching position in order to aim over the cover in front of him. Legs have to move to make that happen.

Also the motion blur is not uniform for the entire model. See the knee to the left vs. the knee to the right, and the hand to the left vs. the hand to the right in the image for clear distinctions in how the motion blur is applied.

Is  cool nowadays? In that case  as I didn't know there was a standard for bullshot quality motion blur though I'm sure its something ridiculous. I'll just go with the looks pretty darn good standard I made up...yeah 5 seconds ago .

Yes they were.

I stand corrected, just watched the video. However my point is still valid, there's NOTHING there that would cause me to RETHINK whether it's a bullshot or not. People are acting like OMFG IT"S CG QUALITY IT MUST BE BS!!! Errr...no.;)

As I stated awhile back I'll be getting a PS3 because of this game, but this new trailer isn't the best thing since 3D graphics.

Yeah, the animation is mo-capped and there are more than motion blur in effect. If in doubt, just look at the 720p video here. The motion should explain why the blur is applied that way.

I don't think people care whether it's the best thing since 3D graphics. Considering the fast action, amount of activities and scale, it is a rare feat of art and technology combined.

Killzone Beta goes public I ve heard. How do we join?

If you where in the closed beta, just delete it and re-download it from the "view downloads" and you are in the public one.

If you where not in the closed beta, I have no clue.

There was talk of having to DL the KZ2 theme from the Store to have a chance. Also some people have mentioned being a member of PSU (U as in underground).

Neither has worked for me. :(

I got in the beta and have been playing it a bit. Pretty impressed so far.

I don't think I have ever played a game that so accurately reproduces the feeling of actually being in combat. I don't know if just thanks to the amazing motion blur and DOF effects they use. But it just really feels authentic and not game like. For me, the feelings I get when in this game are more like the feelings I get when watching Black Hawk down or Saving Pvt Ryan than say playing R2 or COD.

I don't think I need to harp on how good the graphics are. It has been posted and repeated so many times. I think people shouting it even more might start to backfire on this game. But it hard not to...

I like the sizes of the characters, I like the movements speeds. I like how the characters feel like they have real weight to them and are shifting their bodies around not just floating around the floor. I love the jump mechanism in this game. It is useful while at the same time prevents stupid stuff like bunny hopping because you can't shoot when you jump. Plus the jump animation the reload animation is perfection.

So far what I don't like or what needs to be improved the most is the audio. The individual sounds themselves are fine. But there seems to be some bugs when dozens of different sounds from mutiple directions are being mixed together. I feel like it is not accurately reproducing the sound scape. Maybe because the graphics are so good the audio has a hard time matching it.

There are some other little niggles that have to do with the multilayer code not the basic mechanics. And some weird physics with dead bodies that needs to be fixed.

Give us the word on the quality of texturing, please.

You could do us a favour and take a still shot (even off screen) of some of the textures, particularly walls, ground, and objects you can use as cover ;)

Ground textures are very good. Wall textures not so good. SP looks much better :)

Bullet holes in walls look great from afar, up close it's just a texture on the wall (doesn't make an actual hole)...that is unless you're firing at the amazing destructable walls...where the bits break off realistically and lie on the floor and don't disappear.
