Killzone 2 pre-release discussion thread

I can imagine some pretty wicked encounters if weather is put to good use. There are hints that Guerilla is doing just that--one of the KZ2 multiplayer levels seems to be subsituting rain and snow for falling ashes.:devilish:

I'm not really following you, possibly because I'm tired. Can you explain what you mean a little more? (rain and snow for ashes)

The game also suffered from terrible bugs and glitches mind you that ruined some otherwise brilliant moments.

Some of the scenes, were awesome. It was very inconsistent though. It ranged from awesomeness to average. It really invoked the feel of war, destruction and evacuation in many areas, and in others it failed due to bad design.

The AI also suffered from inconsistencies. Sometimes it was very smart and brutal, and in other moments it sucked.

It screamed potential but it was still unpolished. I am pretty sure that it reached the shelves unfinished.

I never really took much notice of those, the AI was, perhaps, a bit inconsistent in places, but I always put that down to the PS2's ability more than Guerillas. Maybe it did get rushed to the shelves, but that would be down to the Halo comparisons and Sony getting over zealous?

very impressive controllable sentry ship. everything just blends so well into the scene. the atmosphere, particles, lighting and animation in this game are just so immersive that it's shifting the game away from being just a video game. this can well be pitted against the new cgi star wars flick.

Killzone 2 is capable of making anyone athirst for it's raw gameplay power and brilliance.

Killzone 2 brings the key factors from aspects of graphics, storyline, and immerses the player to that depth.

Cannon blasts are dampening the lands in the distance and everything here is dynamic. Standing for a whole 10 minutes is difficult when talking about Killzone 2, but anyone who does that will see the defining characteristic of a non-scripted fire action in the scenery. No cannon lands the same place the same time, and the views of the hovering crafts of ISA above is a sight to see.

There is an overlooked aspect of sheer A.I. power that made our play time with Killzone 2 a really special one. The enemies aren't scripted in combat (exceptions to some moments), everything happens differently the next time around. Different strategems and everything takes place in a battlefield just as it does in the contraposition to the relevance of graphical limits.

As you scale the lands, a Helghast may pop up and think it has the upper hand until you lodge a bullet into his right leg. He reproachingly grabs it, and lets out a little muffle of pain. Keep shooting, and the blood pours. Blood in this game goes far beyond a set limit. The level of pain something incurs as a result of your combat is not just limited to foes. We won't ruin the surprise here, but leave you with an opportunity: try and shoot your teammates. See what happens.

The audio in Killzone 2 is purely phenomenal.

With tremendous graphical achievements, detailed storyline, depth of A.I., and an array of sounds, Killzone 2 plays tremendously for a first person shooter and thinks creatively

Ashes blow across one of the multiplayer maps.
I assume that some of the maps in the single player campaign will have their own multiplayer maps.
One of the developers has stated that they will be "toning down" the weather effects in some of the MP maps, so as to make fragging a little easier.

As an aside, that's an appallingly written article. Can't say I'eve ever heard of WhatIfGaming before. Just read some more from their site - it's bloody awful. Reads like it's been babelfished from another language.

I think its just something either made by a fanboy, or made to get some extra hits on their website. I call fake either way. I doubt that WhatIfGaming got the chance for a preview before Gamespot,Ign etc. Its not written like an preview either..

Every press site at E3 got to play Killzone2.

I think the sound and AI part blew that "review/preview".

Well they are right about the AI. Watch the Jeuxvideo video and compare it to the Gamersyde video and very different events happen. Eg. in the JV one, your friend elbows a Helghast in the face :D

He uses the but of his gun rather than his elbow (from what I can make out from the neogaf gif's).

I'd say the gamerankings scores are in general a fair evaluation of a game. KZ1 is about 75% if I recall correctly - it's not a bad score at all, but certainly does not indicate an outstanding game.

Not particularly good either, the average score at gamerankings is around 70ish or so, meaning that a complete medicore game has 7\10.

Mind linking to some previews? I havent seen any previews for KZ2. All i have seen are articles based on presentations, i havent seen any previews where the press has played the game yet.

Didn't the press get to play KZ2 as early as the Judges Day ? The new material in E3 2008 is multiplayer, which the press may not have played. Single player has been extended since the Judges Day. You should be able to find hands on impressions and previews on the net. I think some liked the control, some didn't. Some grew tired of the level, some has just experienced it anew, so on and so forth.

Maybe the average of 70ish just means there are some pretty good games out there. Mediocre by definition would be around the 50 mark.

Not in the context of video game reviews. Mediocre games score in 70s range, good games score in the 80s, great game score in the 90s, typically anything below 70 is considered trash.
For example, on Metacritic, Haze and Lair scored in the 50s.
These are games that are universally shit upon. (yours truly enjoyed the latter and detested the former)

Ignoramus, where did you read that....?

MotherH, over at the Killzone boards. He participates in an informal Q&A in the "ask a dev thread."

The discrediting method of ignoring what's written by someone with an opinion because it's favorable. Great.
