Japan Sales Thread

That's what I understood of the situation too; XB360 isnt even in the works, and the TGS rumour is founded on thin air.

Reuters mentioning the Japanese market today:
Microsoft sold 53,547 units of the Xbox 360 in the four weeks to September 28, compared with 33,071 units of the PS3, data from Enterbrain showed on Friday.

Nintendo Co Ltd safely maintained its leading position in the Japanese console market, having sold 109,548 units of the Wii during the month.

Their story was that they weren't even going to start until much later. Naturally, it could not be true, but there was a story one or two months ago that FFXIII team hadn't even gotten their 360 dev kits yet. Maybe once The Last Remnant ships, the devs with 360 experience will manage to rush things. I do recall that in a recent interview with the MGS Japan head (whose name I can't remember at all), right after the 360 sales boom, that there weren't plans for FFXIII to be released in Japan.

Isn't FF using the unreal 3 engine ? If so it shouldn't take forever to port it ot the 360. The art is already being done and should be drop in drop out on both systems.

So how come the PS3 is selling so feebly in Japan at the moment? Is it just the price?

I think it's more of a "big picture" thing. The high end of interactive electronic entertainment is just not that big in Japan. In the last week, HD consoles accounted for only 15% of total console sales. It's a combination of them being too expensive, not having enough appealing games, the market is bored, the demand for a big technology leap isn't high, etc. Within the HD niche, however, X360 is actually getting more of the RPGs and other Japan-friendly titles, oddly enough.

They use it on some FF title (dont know which one, I cant keep track of all the different versions anymore) but for the main FF on ps3 they use the ''white engine'' as far as I know.

Last Remnant is UE3. FFXIII and FFXIII Versus are on 'Crystal Tools'. The other FFXIII titles aren't for HD consoles so I don't think they'll be using UE3.

Square Enix needs to reconsider option of launching FFXIII in japan :D I don't like devs doing a 360 port for all regions except japan although it was a reasonable thing to do.

Frankly, the week FFXIII comes out for the PS3, Sony will probably sell as many PS3s as the entire current Japanese 360 installed base. The 360 has gotten a bump from a couple RPGs, they'll get another with the Last Remnant bundle, but the PS3 will get one from White Knight Chronicles. And all the previous jumps will look like nothing when FFXIII hits the market in Japan.

What's more likely, that FFXIII will sell over 696,263 PS3 in one week... or that majority of people who will buy FFXIII are among the 2,323,926 that already bought a PS3? I would say the latter.

This actually makes me wonder. How many of the people who bought a PS3 during one of the huge spikes, like, say, MGS4, still have their systems? If the whole 'Japanese buy console and game, then sell both back' meme is true, I wonder just how accurate these install-base numbers are.

They would sell their systems to other people so, it all works out. Its not like the weekly sales include used console sales.

But that's not quite the story you hear, is it? The story is that if you hit the used stores you see piles of barely-used consoles (which doesn't answer why new consoles get a boost each time). I mean, this all is internet knowledge, to which the usual caveats apply.

Is this the 4th week that 360 beaten PS3 in Japan? Or is this some April fool joke (in the wrong month) that lasted too long?

It is the 4th week in a row, and September overall was quite lopsided against the PS3.

Independent of the 360 sales, it seems that the PS3 Japan sales are in a slump.

4th straight, but 360 beat PS3 at least one previous week that I know of (when the Elite was introduced in Japan I believe).

Another interesting stat I saw on GAF was the Xbox only exceeded 10k 3 times in Japan, it's first three weeks.

I actually dont know how many times 360 has done it, but I'm guessing 5 or 6, and several times after launch.

Looks like the 360 is short live. It has constantly decline from 28ks. Beating the PS3 for 4 weeks is good, but it has to come at drastic measures such as costing almost like a PS2 with 2 rpgs around the time. I say they executed well for the month, but it's not lasting. Japan is still Sony ballpark in HD gaming mainly because they can flip the switch and regain momentum at their leisure. Much like MS is in control in the US.
