Japan Sales Thread

We're too close!
Not quite sure why that popped into my head after your warning Alstrong. ;)

As has been mentioned, major releases in Japan have always caused a spike in hardware sales. There's nothing new or unexpected about the 360 surging for the week. The good news for MS is that it has happened quite a few times in this generation and while their overall sales there have been far from impressive, they show continued growth which is what you need to do to build a brand.

I say on a hint the 360 will not stay on this number week by week, on that it dont have the games to keep the japan ppl happy and with FF 13 only being on ps3 in japan, the 360 will fail in japan like the first xbox.

It will fail , but not like the original xbox .

As you can see the original xbox sold 478 thousand while the 360 has sold 685 thousand . The 360 also did this in a much smaller time period. The 360 seems to have a solid chance at 1m units sold in japan in its life time. That would more than double the original xbox's sales in that market. Now i'm not going to bs you and tell you that performance is something sony or nintendo would everwant , however considering how poorly the original did in japan this is a sizable improvement and bodes well for a third generation xbox in japan. If ms can get a few more sizable jrpgs they should hit that 1m mark. They could even surpass it. Who knows what the price drop will do for the console , right now its the system toget for jrpgs.

Already passed the Xbox 1 like a year ago, despite the Xbox 1 having much greater launch sales in Japan.

Xbox 1=big launch>flameout
360=small launch>much better continuing sales.

Next week I'd like to see the numbers, or if it can stabilize above PS3 (seems unthinkable).

I also hate to bring it up since it always seems like a copout, but theres still rumors of 360 shortages in Japan, so this may not even be a true picture.

yes i know , i've talked about it before. By good shape compared to the xbox 1 i'm expecting more than 1m units which would be double what the xbox did.

360 has already sold near 40% more than the xbox in Japan. If the 360 stays on the market for 2 more years it would need to do ~6k a week average to reach 1 million. It looks to be in the realm of possibility. Certainly nothing to get excited about but with the start the 360 had in Japan is pretty good progress.

There are 700k 360's sold already, so they'd need only about 3k/week for two more years to reach 1m units. It seems very doable, especially with still a few (timed) exclusive RPGs on the way (Last Remnant, Star Ocean).

er ya, dunno how I came up with 6k there.

So how come the PS3 is selling so feebly in Japan at the moment? Is it just the price? It would have been inconceivable a year ago that the 360 would beat the PS3 in sales for 3 weeks running.

When's the big sales period in Japan? I seem to remember it's post Christmas rather than pre-Christmas in the west. Is that right?

PS3 in Japan is still expensive, and still lacks the right software for the Japanese audience.

Square Enix needs to reconsider option of launching FFXIII in japan :D I don't like devs doing a 360 port for all regions except japan although it was a reasonable thing to do.

I think it was a time issue. FFXIII would launch in the PS3 Japanese version first, then would be translated and ported afterward.

However, one web site has published a rumor (from "tipsters") that a FFXIII Japan 360 version will be announced at TGS.

Perhaps not a good idea? The XB360 version will be late coming, as far as we've heard according to ongoing development. Announcing to Japan 'you don't need to spend $300 on a PS3 to play the next FF as the XB360 at half the price will play it' would probably cannibalise early sales a bit. Better to release on the PS3 version, recover the costs so far, and then continue to worldwide XB360 releases including Japan.

The only reason to announce an XB360 version now that I can think of is if the porting is happening and going so swimmingly well that they'll have the port ready close to the PS3 version's launch.

Their story was that they weren't even going to start until much later. Naturally, it could not be true, but there was a story one or two months ago that FFXIII team hadn't even gotten their 360 dev kits yet. Maybe once The Last Remnant ships, the devs with 360 experience will manage to rush things. I do recall that in a recent interview with the MGS Japan head (whose name I can't remember at all), right after the 360 sales boom, that there weren't plans for FFXIII to be released in Japan.
