Japan Sales Thread

Yeah probably not, but I think there's still a small chance. I know the Wii traditionally sells a shit load on the holidays increasing each week, but there's a small chance that the Wii is still riding the NSMBW wave and will level off a bit.

Because 200,000 bundles sold with only 45,000 regular PS3s sold is unlikely.

Not sure I follow why here.

The PS3 has been selling between 40,000 and 75,000 a week for the last month or so. It seems reasonable to me that many who bought it for Final Fantasy alone would have purchased the bundle rather than a stand alone game. So I personally would expect a drop off in regular sales from last week (putting the PS3 at sub 75k). That means somewhere in the 45-55k range seems pretty reasonable to me.

Is there something I am missing with this 245,000 number that indicates it is part of some other major sales campaign?

The PS3 was slowly on the holiday rise with absolutely no hardware moving software. To me, it is unlikely that regular hardware sales would drop over the previous week. If anything, it would be higher IMHO. Not to mention some people might settle for the 120GB and buy FFXIII alone as they feel 250GB isn't worth it to them.

It's also likely that not all seeded bundles were sold out in the first 4 days. Taking a 50/50 split would indicate a possiblitiy of ~122k of bundled versus non-bundled. Making a 200k seed of bundles quite possible.

And as with a poster above, I'd say there would be a distinct preference for the bundle over the plain PS3 if both were available. Meaning the bundle should sell out in a store before regular PS3's were even considered.

Which then makes it likely that the number of sold bundles is probably closer to 200k than 100k.

If you are going to buy FF anyways, why would you NOT buy the bundle, in other words. Especially this being Japan and how much they love theme'd packs.

Because, AFAIK, the bundle still costs more than the 120GB model, even if you were to factor in the price of FFXIII to the 120GB model. Some people might find that they don't need the extra space. And although rare, some PS3 owners might not even want FFXIII, or it could be a Christmas gift in which they can purchase FFXIII later. Most shops were sold out of the bundle from what I read so I doubt there were 70-80k unsold bundles.

@patsu, I think the FFXIII PS3 is the same as the regular 250GB but it's obviously white with the picture on it.

I think you underestimate the Japanese love of all things theme'd with whatever it is they like.

They could have released a PS3 with nothing but a character from FF silkscreened on it, in a different color, with a keychain and a photo book and probably charged almost double and it would still probably sell out. :)

I realize this, but like I said, it just doesn't make sense to me that regular PS3 sales would be lower than the previous week... I think they would be slightly higher if anything. PS3 sales were increasing each week even though it was no secret that FFXIII was being released on the 17th.

Aye, and some of those may or may not have been people buying one in anticipation of FF. And in the meanwhile getting in some gaming before it arried. Who knows.
