Well one game is NSMBW and the other is FFXIII :D Anyway, hardware numbers for this week.

Wii 215,129
DSi 113,984
PS3 110,519
PSP 105,801
DSi LL 81,430
DS Lite 17,695
Xbox 360 6,489
PSP go 4,192
PS2 3,747

I bet total Wii hardware sales of the next two weeks will be higher than PS3, despite FFXIII.
I'll take that bet. :)

PS3 237,086 110,519 347,605
Wii 191,915 215,129 407,044

:D :D

Also worth noting is that 16 titles in the Top 20 and and 37 in the Top 50 are on Nintendo systems.

~60K difference, not bad at all compared to the pre-price cut periods, especially last year. Still, the Wii remains king and that 200K+ figure isn't mostly attributed to NSMB (at 500K+), whereas last week's and this week's PS3 figure is FFXIII's magic still working.

Another 188K for FFXIII. I suppose the shipment may have exceeded 2 million now.

Heh, Nice one thop! At least I was right to say earlier that the PS3 wouldn't overtake the Wii in terms of yearly sales ...

Interesting watching this play out. After reading some of the impressions of FFXIII combat I'm not entirely surprised that sales of it have dropped so relatively quickly. And with the drop in sales, it also pretty much determined what PS3 hardware sales would be in relation to the Wii.

I was expecting both to do a little better. Not at all surprised that Wii still managed to do a bit better. I was figuring a close battle either way for top hardware sales with it having a chance to go either way.

That in itself speaks volumes for either [1] How well PS3 can compete now, [2] How Wii is more "normal" now, or [3] a combination of [1] and [2].

Regards,
SB

I don't really understand this sentiment, it is essentially tracking as most other FF titles have "good"/"bad" combat or not.

FFXIII didn't drop quickly, it's in line with how FF games drop off, normally. 1.5M was way above what a lot of people were predicting, but also well below how the PS2 games opened.

As for normalcy, we can't really say much about that looking only at December. We have to see what effect Mario has on Wii sales in the long term.

PS3 continuing to do well, so that's definitely encouraging. Are there any other big PS3 titles recently launched other than FFXIII over there?

It's sorta only FFXIII. A few early next year, I think, but after March, I think, it'll be a bit barren, barring unforeseen releases. Wii isn't much better, but Mario might (will?) show up in top 10 for a good chunk of 2010.

I think the only notable release is a re-release of RE5 (with the DLC) called Alternative Edition that's hitting mid Feb. Incidentally, you'd need that version if you want to play the new scenarios ASAP, otherwise it's March 9 for DLC's worldwide and later in the month for the western disc versions.

There's more than that... there's GT5, a few RPG's, Yakuza 4 and a Gundam (I think) game. Not sure how this will do, but there's also the "This is it" bundle.

I'm actually quite curious how Heavy Rain will do in Japan. It probably won't do great, but there is something about it that makes me feel that it could be popular there.
