Halo 3 Beta: May 16th - June 7th

You're right, the camera angle/position does make a big difference. From the video captures, the most you can really tell is that the MP models have been updated to reflect the hand guards. And actually, check out the mid-air Red Spartan in these (gigantic) pics:

The chest plate shows the same sort of scarring/damage.

BUT: Look at the forearms... They're different, specifically near the elbows.

Considering every character in the MP game is wearing the exact same armor, and looks identical except for decals, you would think they could splurge a little bit on that armor texture and normal map.

They shouldn't even need to have 2 separate skins for the red and blue team. Just use one and have the color defined by a pixel shader.

Well, presumably they're doing it the same way as Halo:CE. They have a base neutral skin and then they use offsets to define the colour. If you use some tools on Halo PC, you can see that there is only one texture for the armour.

That looks like the new model to me, does not look like the Halo 2 model at all.

Well, the only thing that I find different, geometry-wise, is the forearm guard. It's different and more like Halo 2.

...and am I the only one that finds this armour discussion rather um...silly?

Bungie could easily be using Halo 2 MP code in the Halo 3 MP system without using Halo 2 graphics code. Considering that Halo 2 has one of the best (if not the best) sets of Live functionality, it makes sense to build on that.

Anyway, the graphical quality of the alpha footage was not important. I tried to look for it but I kept getting swept up in how fun it looked. I'm quite fine with waiting for more graphical details. The game won't ship till late this year. It has time.

Are there any videos from the SP mode?

What I ve seen so far from the game graphically wise doesnt impress me at all, and I hope thast because the videos I ve seen are from the MP mode. Atleast I hope they are from MP. I was expecting a lot more from such a mega franchise. Resistance and Bioshock look much better

How old is this build?

I was reading the Bungie.net forums and a person there claimed that it was around six months old based on the fact that you can see Dan Hsu from EGM in one of the later scenes of the ViDoc. I have not checked to confirm, but has Bungie made any statements regarding the age of the footage in the ViDoc?

It should be obvious it's MP if you've ever played Halo.

In any case, the only good SP footage is the E3 announcement trailer last year (but if you're desperate for something 'new', there's this really low-res shot that might be from single player). So take that announce trailer, replace the billboard plants with something next-gen, replace the horrible textures (all the ground textures) with ones that look worth something that would at least be in Halo 2, add a total of 40+ allies, enemies, and vehicles for any average encounter, translate that to the multitude of different environments Halo normally includes, and you should have an idea of the baseline for the SP. The engine has only improved since then, and the art has presumably gotten better.

Bungie's basically said that due to being a professionally produced film (part of a documentary that's presumably also going to be made by Film Oasis, for which they've been recording footage since late 2005), most footage is quite old. Dan Hsu was there back in mid-October, and you see him playing it a number of times. None of the features they've talked about since late last year, or early this year (literally first half of January), were in those builds. Notably the interactive water (which flows around objects, such as Warthog tires, reacts to other objects moving through it or hitting it, etc) and the "decorators" such as 3d, properly-lit and shadowed, physics-affected grass and debris. And they've been "sitting on it" for a while too. The last vidoc, too, was 4-6 months old back when it was released in December, according to what somebody from 1Up said when they asked Bungie about it.

But they haven't gone out in any press release and said it's X months old. Just that it's "old and alpha" and that's pretty much it.

Warning: time for me to inject my opinion on this stuff, geek out, and go slightly tangential.

I think elements, just like that old E3 announce, look really good. Others are obviously placeholder, some things dropped right in from Halo 2, and I fully expect them to improve. Honestly, I have pretty high expectations... and honestly, I see little reason to not expect them to be met. How many hands does it take you to count the number of games which outdid Bungie's previous efforts in those timeframes, considering the hardware, considering everything the games did? After that, it's all art, and with that.... well, you know what goes on with that.

Halo 1 looked good/great. Halo 2 was a mixed bag. As one of the developers said on the bonus DVD, "all we're asking for is 6 more weeks," or something to that effect. Obviously it's no excuse for screwing up the development schedule... and you can always use more time to fix one thing or another, but there's also a point in there where it's just time to release it. The game clearly wasn't there yet, both visually AND gameplay wise (grenades, Brutes. Jackal Snipers, and even some AI on like the Elites, with those boxes...). So, some things in Halo 2 looked really good, and others looked like ****. Given everything, I think development, and everything else about Halo 3, is going much better than Halo 1 and 2. So, yeah, High expectations. And perhaps a little too optimistic about that. But we'll see. A comment regarding their graphics was that some of it looks eerily similar to their concept art, in color palettes, setup, etc. And I've always loved Bungie's concept art, from Halo 1, to the stuff you can see in the 2nd vidoc (brutes especially--the ancient-looking armor sets; the more ornate sets; the look of the face, so that they didn't look completely retarded), to the High Ground concept art seen in this vidoc. If they have the proper amount of time to produce that content, I think Halo 3 could look significantly better for its time than either 1 or 2. Maybe they should make the weapons look less practical, and more crazy looking. Those things take up a large percentage of the screen real estate, afterall. Same goes for the environments--more little details, that break up the simplicity and monotony of the levels. In this way, I hope that it was development time that put limits on the latter (perhaps even the former, to some extent) in the first two games.

And that was a nice way for me to cram in alot of things regarding everything Halo. You guys should appreciate that I keep it all in one place.

yea for those who never played Halo, that was all Multiplayer footage and there IS HALO 2 footage spliced in for comparison.

Also, new Bungie update...

You also saw some concepts, placeholders, prototypes and things that were never planned for inclusion in the final game. You saw some fake and placeholder and ancient UI (my favorite thing was a fan video where they thought they’d discovered how many campaign levels were going to be in the final game.) and loads of other accidental red herrings....

So, almost all of the reaction we read was positive, but there was some grumbling about the graphics. You can decide for yourself if you like the look of the game in a few weeks, and you’ll certainly recognize moments and areas from that footage. All three levels however, have undergone significant improvements since that footage was taken, months ago, including lighting, decorators, textures, and my favorite – water effects. I don’t want to overpromise here and set your expectations too high, so I am deliberately capping the type of language I use to discuss these improvements. A good example however, would be the water in Valhalla.
In one moment of the Vidoc, we see a Spartan launch out of the Mancannon and meet a sorry, embarrassing end in mid air as a sniper uses him for target practice. Now in that footage from old build, he tumbles into the river and slides splash-lessly into a boring placeholder water effect. He won’t do that in May. He’ll do something neater.
You guys did see the final revelation of the mysterious X-Button. It’s what’s known (at the moment) as Equipment. The two very plain examples shown in the Vidoc were the Bubble Shield and the “Tripmine.” Both can be used in all manner of strategic and hilarious ways. There might have been another, but you can wait a month to see that one....

In the old alpha footage you’re watching, the shield generator actually rolled downhill and the player protected inside it had to walk backwards with it to enjoy its shelter. In the beta, it won’t roll. We’re still playing around with things like that. It’s also possible to simply walk inside the shield and fight the inhabitant. It only protects them from explosions and projectiles. Vehicles and people can wander right through. If you die without deploying it, you’ll drop it, just like a gun or ‘nades. Someone else can then pick it up and use it..... some more details of the Vidoc and beta at link

Well, at least we know how the shield works in the beta. I would have liked to see him fire the AR at the wall just to gauge the accuracy/bullet spread at the very least...

Looks pretty good when you consider it's multiplayer and still a beta.... I mean when you compare it to say GRAW2 multi or RS6: Vegas multi (both very good looking single player games imo) it's worlds ahead.

Ultimately if it ends up looking as good as Gears Of War multi, but on the larger scale that halo has, that'd be amazing in my opinion. That's what I'm hoping for, and I don't think it's out of reach given the beta shots above.

I agree. I've seen the full 7 minute higher res version (still crappy SD video but better than the youtube) and....(this is a BETA build and those are not hiRes screen shots)

it could easily end up looking as good as GoW MP or better actually since it's more colorful and there is more variety.

the mechanics and game play of Multiplayer are what really set it apart and so far the movement and play mechanics appear to be of the same high quality as Halo2.

Oh... I didn't know they were remaking Zanzibar... What's the new name?

The added detail with the sniper rifle display is pretty nice.

also this map will not be in the public beta as allegedly it is not as far along in the graphics process as the 3 that will be released.

I think this looks pretty good though
