Gran Turismo Sport [PS4]

At least not as mediocre as it does now.

I mean nobody is expecting it to look as good as DC since it runs at 60fps (most of the time) but then again, the lighting is static, it's not calculating dynamic GI, simulating clouds volumetrically nor applying high quality post processing during gameplay... Rain, where are thou?
That german Preview video mentions that the Build available at PD runs with locked 60fps on PS4 Pro and may still be that way on base PS4 but at a lower resolution. Also mentions that the lighting impressed him -then again who knows what type of high end screen he played it on.

Yes indeed, I didn't mean to exclude the standard PS4. WCG means Wide Color Gamut and for the newest TVs it usually referring to DCI P3 which offers roughly 1 billion of colors vs around 16 million colors for Rec 709 "non wide color gamut". So potentially coupled with HDR the cars, scenery and weather could look much more realistic.
Is it possible for a game to look realistic in HDR but not realistic tone-mapped down to SDR? Photographs of real life still look photorealistic. Obviously the HDR will have more pop and be more like a space in a reality, but I don't know if it'll look more like real cars. I guess it better fools the brain's interpretation.

The HDR will look a lot more like reality. But the SDR will still look good. Just like any other thing we've seen since we were born looked realistic in SDR.
HDR will just make it look a lot more "real". It's hard to describe.

I'm making a distinction between 'real' and 'realistic'. Consider a really naff renderer with the cars and city looking like cardboard. HDR would make it look more like looking at real cardboard cars, but not any more like you're looking at real cars. I imagine HDR being like good 3D, in creating a sense of reality, but that's not the same as making something realistic in terms of looking how it should in real life when trying to approximate real life.

Not sure if HDR makes things look more real.

Many movies we see today are plump full of CGI and many of folks are fooled into thinking the scene was real, yet the movie is in SDR.

It will match more of what you expect, as if you were there, not sure if it makes the scene any more "believable"

Well I should've stated looking more realistic in terms of lighting as in how light is better perceived by the eyes due to greater contrast thus making the game world more realistic. But of course SDR would still look realistic when tonemapped but less pop.

Everything about it. At first I assumed it was in game, but it's leaps and bounds better, especially the lighting (headlights). So questioned why it's that much better, and realised it's because it's real life (car turning off, no UI, looks real). And that's little videos. Full screen would be more obvious.

Is there a front-of-car-cam in GTS to compare like-for-like viewpoints?

Haven't seen any bumper cam footage, it's always in the daylight. I'll make another comparison when the final game releases. :D

But then again, GT Sport isn't out yet, so you don't know how it runs. It already runs more stable than the previous two GT titles and it was just the beta. Polyphony is definitely making a bigger effort in making it a stable 60fps.

DriveClub is overall probably the most impressive racer I've seen, but GT is pushing double the frame rate and DriveClub has much simpler physics. GTs AA is also much sharper and cleaner, and the lighting and car models are better than DriveClub's IMO. All about trade-offs.

And from what I've read, rain will be in the game (it was shown in trailers, but no actual gameplay AFAIK). It won't have dynamic weather though, at least not at launch.
The lighting and shading is definitely superior in DC. You can compare GTS replays to DC gameplay and the latter still comes ahead in pretty much every way.

Only when in harsh weather conditions and not pure daylight.
Car models and lighting is far superior in the same conditions in GTS

At its peak, DriveClub looks amazing, right up there with GT Sport (and arguably better in certain conditions). It may be technically superior to GT Sport (I dunno, not my area to debate). But GT Sport is more consistent and more convincing IMO. No other game has made me take more double looks to see if it's real-life or game footage than GT Sport, and it's not even a finished product yet.

Anyway, this is getting OT and probably belongs to the best racing game graphics thread.

Drive Club definitely has a cartoon edge but I think it was a stylistic choice, like the Uncharted series. Realistic until you're looking for something a bit more.

when DC was first released I didn't see it.
Looking at the newer games coming out, I do actually see it. When DC set the bar, it was hard to say it didn't look realistic, it was setting the bar.

Now that others have come forward, I can see the game doesn't nearly hold up as well as it once did. Particularly the environments, it's certainly easy to get caught up in the car, but if you zoom out and use that peripheral vision, you do see this cartoon edge that I didn't see before. Or at least, it's something I zero in on, now that I don't see it in the newer titles coming out.

Nothing wrong with it, I think DC lighting model still holds, mainly because it's the game with the most accurate amount of global illumination. But the rest of the game is aged compared to GTS and F7.

People like to compare them but I wonder why. Not only are they 2 pretty different games but they were released very far apart. Driveclub isn't 60fps, doesn't allow up to 24 cars on track, different physic calculations.
The only 2 things they have in common is both are exclusive titles and have cars in it.

Project Cars 2 will be better for comparison but Exclusive games continue to look best this gen. There is a reason why Driveclub,Uncharted 4, The Order, Horizon:ZD and now GTS are seen as some of or the best looking games so far.

It's that DC did very well in certain lighting conditions and those certain lighting conditions were great at covering up weaknesses elsewhere. Screen shots above are an excellent example, and I wouldn't say those are exactly cherry picked. DC has always ran with low environment textures, and it became more apparent with the 1440p patch.
All the newer drivers have significantly more consistency in quality across the board.

Cartoony, lol. Well I guess that sort of mental gymnastics are to be expected specially in this thread.
They didnt say it looks cartoony. You are trying too much to discredit anyone who disagrees with you by misinterpreting what people say.
They said a cartoon edge. Whatever that means. I have the game but I dont know what that "cartoon" edge is.
