Formula 1 - 2014 Season

Pos - Driver - Team - Time - Gap - Laps
1. - Nico Hulkenberg - Force India-Mercedes - 1m36.880s - 78
2. - Fernando Alonso - Ferrari - 1m37.879s +0.999s - 64
3. - Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes - 1m37.908s +1.028s - 74

There's an interview somewhere with Hulk (on AMuS) where he states that his time was done on soft tyre, Alonsos on the medium and Hamilton on the hard tyre. He believes there's about a second between the compounds, so rates Hamiltons time as a very strong effort...

Hamilton's time was also on lap 30 or 40 of a long run I think. Mercedes definitely looking like the team to beat at the moment.

Edit. My mistake misread the update yesterday they didn't specify how long he'd been out

I think Hamilton did another 17 laps after when he set his best... yeah. As for form, I have a feeling McLaren could be quite strong this year...

Looking forward to seeing Kevin Magnussen racing. He's been good in testing so far.

Kobayashi believes that Merc powered cars have up in the range of 20-30kph straight line speed than Renault powered cars do at the moment...!

Makes sense, the BBC seem to think that one engine produces around 800 bhp while another produces around 650. I guess Ferrari fall somewhere in between.

There are certain restrictions so I guess in the race it'll be pretty much a wash, but being able to produce way more power will help Mercedes engines cars overtake and pull away, then stick it back in fuel saving mode for a few laps to make up for it.

The engines are fuel flow limited as well as RPM limited, that indicates that the higher energy output is a consequence of higher thermodynamic efficiency. That also means higher fuel efficiency.

Cheers

Pre-launches the commentary was around the necessity for the size of the cooling (inlets and outlets), post car launches the commentary is how extreme the cooling needs to be on the Renault and surprise the small radiator sizes on the Mercedes. Maybe Mercedes have figured out ERS-H better than Renault.

Grabbed from Autosports forum;

what he didnt say in English are;

  • the speed difference to Merc is so big that I feel as if my heart would stop
  • (on massive speed different)...to the extent I almost turn my steering wheel out of surprise. It's scary and shocking actually
  • (the differece/improvements in Renault engine from Jerez) just that the strange vibration is gone
  • At this rate, better bring GP2 car for Melbourne.
  • Make the transponder detachable and carry it and run by myself would give greater chance of scoring points
however,

  • the fact that Caterham giving more mileage to Renault engine than any other teams is positive thing in terms of contributing to Renault's effort of overcoming current difficulties
  • willing to help the development for Renault as much as possible
Ouch @ bolded.

We'll the BBC had some interesting comments that Renault are running with reduced power so the team's can get some mileage on their cars but as engines have to be frozen by the end of February it certainly isn't looking good for Renault team's. They obviously hope to fix all their problems before the freeze but surely that is unlikely if they are still suffering reliability problems even when running much less power.

Also worrying, for Ferrari, that at times red bull have been running a similar pace to Ferrari even with restricted engines

It's official now - the championship is over, better luck next year Ferrari & Mercedes!

With this livery and Valtteri's helmet livery, there's simply no way he won't win the championship!

So alcohol branding is allowed but tobacco isn't? It's strange.

However, the car looks really cool (nose somehow looks better) with this livery.

I think it's bypassed by the fact it's Martini Racing, rather than just Martini

Drinking doesn't cause cancer.

You can advertise alcohol all day long.

I does look the nuts. Hope they do well this season. As I grew up in the 90s and was a big fan of Mansell I would consider them "my team".

Alcohol doesn't contain addictive chemicals; Though i am for it being banned from sporting sponsorships(especially motorsports).

Looks cool and I wish them all the best as the past few seasons Williams suffered a lot!
Maybe Pat arrival gave them wings? :D

Alcohol doesn't contain addictive chemicals? All alcoholic drinks are pure ethanol? Doesn't compute.

Anyway, there are many countries in the world where advertising for alcohol is prohibited. I think it will go the way of tobacco advertising, just wait a few years.
