Formula 1 - 2013 Season

Yeah I know what you mean. Especially with the tyre situation, it can be tricky, because a competitive car might as well end up being quicker than a car that has lapped him at some point. This actually happened, I think last year, or the year before, when Hamilton unlapped himself while Vettel and I think Alonso were fighting for positions, but was clearly quicker.

What I was more surprised about is this:

CANADIAN GRAND PRIX, Montreal, Race
1. Vettel Red Bull 1h32:09.143
2. Alonso Ferrari + 14.408
3. Hamilton Mercedes + 15.942
4. Webber Red Bull + 25.731
5. Rosberg Mercedes + 1:09.725
6. Vergne Toro Rosso + 1 lap
7. Di Resta Force India + 1 lap
8. Massa Ferrari + 1 lap
9. Raikkonen Lotus + 1 lap
10. Sutil Force India + 1 lap
11. Perez McLaren + 1 lap
12. Button McLaren + 1 lap
13. Grosjean Lotus + 1 lap
14. Bottas Williams + 1 lap
15. Ricciardo Toro Rosso + 2 laps
16. Maldonado Williams + 2 laps
17. Bianchi Marussia + 2 laps
18. Pic Caterham + 2 laps
19. Chilton Marussia + 3 laps
20. Gutierrez Sauber + 7 laps

Everyone after Rosberg was lapped. That IMO is quite something I can't remember having seen before to this extend.

From fresh memory after all the discussions after Barcelona, in 2011 Barcelona GP only top 4 finished on the same lap, Alonso who finished 5th and started 4th got lapped already.

There was a race in the 90s where I seem to recall virtually everyone was lapped. Up to about 3rd I think.

And in the olden days weve all heard the story of the guy that was so far ahead he stopped in the pits on the penultimate lap so they could polish the car so it looked nice crossing the line

I believe Damon Hill of all people lapped the entire field twice in a race?

Hill in Adelaide 1995 yeah - not quite as amazing as it sounds as only 8 cars finished. It's only been done one other time, by Jackie Stewart in Spain 1969.

Jenson Button says it is only a matter of time before Lewis Hamilton shows his true speed for his Mercedes team and that it will "shock you all".
Hamilton has struggled for pace more than expected compared to team-mate Nico Rosberg since joining Mercedes this year.

But his former McLaren team-mate Button said: "For Lewis, it is the same as it is for all of us - if he does not have a car balance that suits him, then it is not easy.
"And, of course, Nico is fast. But Lewis has not lost his speed. It is still there. He will come back and then he will shock you all."

Button was talking in an interview with the German magazine Auto Motor Und Sport conducted at the Canadian Grand Prix, the day before Hamilton outqualified Rosberg for the first time in four races.

Button added: "You have to be fair. He has at least scored significantly more points than Nico. Lewis is incredibly fast."

I think Button may be missing Lewis..

I think they'll weigh up the options and then give Mercedes a minor slap on the wrists and punish Pirelli heavily.

Mercedes have already stated they'll leave (This will probably include their engine supply too) if their sportsmanship is questioned and the FIA will not want that to happen.

What can they do towards Pirelli? Pirelli has actually questioned the legality of them being up in front of the International Tribunal.

Also if Mercedes is lightly slapped, the other teams will queue up to take their turn at a 3-day tyre test.

Brinkmanship in F1 has never really resulted in anything after Bernie took control.

I imagine that whatever the ruling, there will be a 'clarification' of the rules to prevent this from happening again.

Why would Charlie Whiting give the go ahead over the telephone and in writing and then it is declared non-binding?

That was, IMHO, a mistake by the FIA - the request should have been put through a formal process rather than a decision being made over the telephone or via an e-mail.

Ridiculously weak slap on the wrists for a punishment there :???:

Guess Mercedes was convincing enough on claiming "we leave the series if you punish us"

Have you followed the tribunal at all or are you just being judgmental as usual?

Seems like a reasonable enough punishment to me considering it had FIA approval. Shame for the young drivers at Merc though.

Wow, I am impressed that was a pretty wise decision.... in fact I am in a bit of shock.

The FIA were stuck between a rock and hard place as Pirelli and Mercedes were like "you even try anything and we will do you over".

Interesting power struggle between the FIA, teams, suppliers and sponsors.
