Formula 1 - 2013 Season

The lack of Alonso on that list probably meant that he maximize his qualifying and race result, thus starting at the highest possible position and finished at the highest position possible from where he started.

Lots of overtakes can mean that the driver was out of his true position a lot of times compared to others (either by under performing, bad luck, or the car qualifying pace was bad).

Lack of overtakes can mean that the driver was lucky, with people ahead of him crashing out rather than having to overtake them.

Alonso almost always had to overtake to get to the podium.

Vettel at 8, and Fernando at 10th is the most unreal I have ever seen. Should shange their cars and see who is who.

While you can disagree all you want with the BBC list, Alonso 3rd best ever and Schumacher better than Senna?

Vettel being top just meant that he hit more people, got away with it due to his incredible luck and then passed them due to having a car that was 2 seconds a lap faster.

Never in a million years is Schumacher the greatest driver ever, nor Alonso 3rd.

Yes, because of two things- Fernando is the best driver among all the others right now and he is the one who ended Michael's career. Should be respected, no?
Senna doesn't have 7 !!! Championship titles. ;)

I have serious doubts about the legitimacy of those overtaking charts btw. Alonso must have passed 2-3 people on the first lap or before the first corner in every race. It sure felt like it. For him to not appear in any of the charts is complete and utter bullshit, you're telling me he didn't pass more than 16 of the top 5 teams in all those races? He must have done that in the first corner alone - how many times did he go from 9th on the grid to 4th or 5th or higher in the first lap?

In your opinion he is, but all the statistics says he's not.
He didn't end Michaels career, he was lucky enough to have not only fast car, but one that was reliable too which managed to end Schumachers championship-train, but that's not the same thing as ending ones career or being the only one able to do so.

Senna doesn't have 7 championships, but he also didn't go through his career in a position which Schumacher had most of his career (absolutely best car, nr 1 driver position always), not to mention his career ended before his time due the accident which led to his death.

Which is exactly what makes Michael the greatest. Depends on point of view but you neglect it because you dislike him for some reason. Or underestimate what he has achieved.

Most of the statistics you rely on are damn lies.

Realistically, Alonso could be proclaimed 5th greatest of all time, but even that's a push and would generally raise eyebrows.

The top 4 of Senna, Fangio, Clark and Schumacher are basically untouchable and can appear in any order. After that you have maybe 4 others that could realistically claim the next spots. Prost would almost always be regarded as 5th with Stewart, Moss and Alonso fighting over 6th to 8th. Vettel should be at 9th with Lauda 10th.

You forgot Häkkinen from there completely, Räikkönen Vettel and Hamilton belong to same class as Alonso regardless of where you rank Alonso

But let's be realistic for a bit, nostalgia aside, do lists like those really make sense? It's impossible to compare a current gen driver with a fangio gen driver. In some ways it would even be hard to compare a 90's driver to the current drivers.

Hakkinen, #1 driver and the fastest car by a mile is nowhere near the top 10 I'm afraid.

Yes that's because the other drivers were Coulthard and Eddie Irvine.

There are many great drivers in the field currently, not just the one or two of yesteryear. We have never been so lucky.

Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel, Raikonnen all very fast and at a really high level Add to that, Button, Webber, Maldanado even Grosjean and Perez who have their days of remarkable pace if not consistency.

In the past it was Schumacher +1 driver and then the rest of the field e.g. Hakkinen, Hill, Villeneuve etc. Or Mansell and basically no one due to his car virtually driving itself, even then Patrese could not touch him. And that is as far as my memory (and age) goes.. ;)
