Formula 1 - 2011 Season

By not allowing to change the name, the other teams aren't getting any more money, because then the Renault name stays = original bigger sum to Lotus Renault. So the denial/or approval of other teams doesn't really change the amount of money passed, but only the name of Lotus Renault chassis :)

I dont think you understand. The F1 teams get a share of the commercial revenue based on the finishing position in the constructors championship.

Now if a team decides to change its name without approval, then they forgo the commercial revenue due to them(this sum is in the tens of millions of dollars). This is also why Sauber kept its name as BMW Sauber F1 Ferrari, even though BMW had quit the sport. So by keeping the same name, they can keep the revenue, otherwise they lose it. Now a workaround to this is the Title sponsor position, hence by announcing Lotus as a title sponsor, they can change the name to Lotus Renault and still keep the money. Got it?

That has nothing to do with what I said.

According to bludd there is another way around that, and that is if the other teams agree to let them do the name change. If other teams don't agree, the name Renault stays and Lotus gets the money, if other teams agree the name renault goes away, but team lotus gets the money based on the agreement with other teams.

So essentially the other teams are deciding only about the name of the new Lotus Renault, because Lotus Renault is going to keep the cash in all situations anyway.

What do the other teams gain by preventing the name change? If Lotus Renault can still keep the cash with this sponsor method.

edit: or is there some method that gives everybody more money?

Lotus Renault GP obviously wants to have their chassis be called Lotus. If they get the approval of all the other teams to change chassis name, they get to keep the heritage money they get now as Renault chassis.

If they don't get approval, they are basically a new entry and will not get the heritage money which is then put back into the pot and divided between the teams. Ferrari and McLaren as the oldest teams in F1 get the most heritage money.

It is in Group Lotus' interests that the chassis be called Lotus, because if not, they will really be Renaults.

And because there is one team which will veto that name change they will still be called Renaults.

If anyone wonder who that opposing team might be just look no further than at Team Lotus :p.
They dispute the rights to use Lotus name in F1 and this vote might be very precious to them at some point in the future!

Besides it will be interesting if both Renault and Team Lotuses will go ahead and use black/gold livery on their cars! Imagine confusion this will bring on commentators .

Nah, there won't be confusion. Team Lotus is Lotus. Lotus Renault GP is Renault. :D

The art of Fusion - are they in talks with AMD on that subject?

@Bludd - I saw a picture of Team Lotus black and gold livery and it looked like twin brother/sister of Lotus Renault livery. Unfortunately I can't find it now because Renault forum was moderated and links to it have been removed.

Yes, I know. Team Lotus announced they were going to use the JPS livery and then Group Lotus said there were going to use it.

Recently, Mike Gascoyne has had a poll on livery and that the yellow and green one we saw this year won, so maybe Team Lotus will go back to that.

In other news, team orders ban is gone for 2011 and the new regs for next year have been ratified.

It doesn't mention turbos for 2013 but I guess 4 cylinder 1.6 litre engines with a 12k rev limit needs to have turbos for power and efficiency?

Re: team orders ban gone for 2011

I can already see it happening:

"Felipe... Fernando is fas.... ah what the heck, forget it - just move over Felipe"

"Felipe... Hamilton is behind you and Fernando needs to beat him in this race to win the F1 title. Please be careful that you don't accidentally run him off the track when he tries to overtake you..."

:p

Uh oh, this might be the death knell for Team Lotus

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/88759

The Chapman family is backing Group Lotus and they would prefer that the Team Lotus name not enter F1 again. There's legal action between 1Malaysia (the entity running Lotus Racing/Team Lotus) and Group Lotus over licensing (Lotus Racing got a 5 year deal which was ended prematurely), so Tony Fernandes can still win the court case and maybe use the Team Lotus name, but I don't know if it is worth doing if the Champman's are against it. It goes against all the heritage stuff he's been building up.

I bet we'll see AirAsia F1 Team or 1Malaysia Racing instead now.
