Formula 1 - 2011 Season

Yeah there are plenty of statistics. Vettel has 93% of maximum points after four races. I wonder how many times driver hasn't won a title after having similar success. Anything is possible sure, but I think Vettel is extremely strong and now driving with the confidence of a champion in what seems to be the best car...

I agree, but I am hoping it won't be a cakewalk. I especially don't want to see more drives from Vettel where no-one can touch him, even his team mate in the same car. I want to see fighting for the win like in China.

Is it shaping up to be the most boring F1 years ever? At this rate, Vettel will have it won by the half-way stage of the competition.

It's anything but boring to me. The racing it great. If Vettel is that much faster than the competition, then good on him. He deserves his success.

I've likely already watched more full laps in the first few races than full seasons in the past.

With all the rule changes and dicing, I find Vettel's pace even that much more impressive.

But there is tons of fighting and competition going on for the other positions so even if Vettel will wins the wdc easily the season will be far from boring I think. For example you hardly saw any shots of Vettel on Sunday because there was so much other stuff going on. Now compare that with not too long ago where 2/3 of a race you'd be watching at the leader.

I'm inclined to say that it's Redbull that is faster than the competition that's making the difference. The opposition can't even close the gap to Webber and qualifying does show a mighty difference in performance. Last year, Redbull made it difficult on themselves with reliability issues and Webber and Vettel taking points off of each other. If Vettel remains this strong over Webber this year and no reliability problems surface, it's going to be a cake-walk for them.

If this continues, Vettel will walk it easily, as Hamilton, Alonso, Webber, Button will be picking up the peaces by taking valuable points off of each other. That is, if they don't close the gap soon.

High level sources have revealed that the FIA has written to teams informing them that from this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix they will no longer be allowed to continue flowing gases through the engine when the driver is not on the throttle.

This is what makes a lot of the cars rumble and make weird noises now. This is how Red Bull have been so impressive in quali, I think, because they really have perfected using this crazy engine mode.

Anyone have any more info?

Good. I hate rushed regulation changes. Everything is fine the way it is. Let the teams develop with the current regulations.

Engines are for making the wheels turn, not direct aero benefit. As James Allen says the FIA usually put up reg changes about now due to the deadline of June 30th, where they can unilaterally change regs for next year.

Red Bull are predictably untouchable in quali at Catalunya, but happily Webber beat Vettel to pole. Hamilton is third, Alonso three thousands behind in fourth, Button, Petrov, Rosberg, Massa (disappointing, he's been totally off the pace all weekend), Maldonado (impressive), Schumacher (did not set a time in Q3, saved tyres).

For the race, Vettel may not have KERS, but I am hoping some strategy can make winning less easy. This track will be the first big test for DRS, because there's usually no worthwhile overtaking here.

I am happy for Kovalainen and Team Lotus because they got into Q2 for the first time today. Granted, Heidfeld didn't even qualify and Barrichello had gearbox problems, but still, great job by Team Lotus. Kovy has KERS cars behind him, though, so it will be a tough race.

Great race again. Alonso got an amazing start and looked like he was holding on fine, but at the end was lapped without having any major issues. Hamilton was pushing hard, but couldn't find a way past Vettel, who is having an incredible season. Button had a great race after the poor start. The exact opposite of Alonso. Ferrari's race pace was bad compared to McLaren, which was surprising after the time trial.

Funnily, most overtaking was generated by differences in tyre grip and happened on rather unusual places, rather than the long straight. But with 2.5s difference between compounds and the soft one being rather short-lived, no suprises there.

Just as Webber in China, Heidfeld shows how much value can be had in three fresh sets of soft tyres, when the rest has to struggle on used ones...

Alonso had a truly special start, but Vettel was unstoppable. I was rooting for Hamilton to pass Vettel at the end there, but it didn't work out. Interesting race, I was happy at the start with Alonso leading and sad at the end because Vettel's dominance, while deserved, is not good.

Nothing surprising about Alonso really. They compromised their race badly by running a soft tyre for every stint in Qualifying. The only thing surprising was Alonsos spectacular start and how he was able to stay out at front, though the DRS zone was useless and the Ferrari was quicker on the straights compared to the Redbull.

As for Kers & Redbull. Everyone is talking about how Vettel didn't have Kers. Did Webber have Kers? I never got the impression he had and every in-car footage of Webber (not that there were many) he always had a full bar AFAIK?
