Formula 1 - 2011 Season

It is an automated system for enabling it with markers for the drivers to assist them. It only works when the driver is within 1 second of the car in front on a particular stretch of tarmac (probably the finish line straight).

Race Control ultimately controls it but it is not done through human intervention.

Aus GP weekend, I watched the practice sessions on TV, was really confused about the rules on the use of adjustable wing and flaps. Do the drivers need the permission of the race control to adjust them ?

Race control have an override and there are restictions as to when you can use it in the race.

The intent is that they are used as an aid to passing drivers, so in the race they are limited to using it when they get within 1 second of the car in front. Once they get within one second, the next straight they come to the wing adjustment will become available. One thing that I've not cleared up is whether they are limiting it to particular straights on particular tracks or not.

The system can be overiddent by race control. It will not be allowed on the first two laps for safety purposes and they have just announced they will not allow it in wet sessions.

Apparently drivers are free to use in in dry qualifying.

The system can be tuned as well. I think what you saw in testing was specific times in the session where race control were allowing use to see if they have got the right times in which it can be used, etc.

It is free to use in all practice and qualifying sessions, but only on dry tyres.

I can't wait for quali and the race, it is going to be very interesting.

Well, they have to be able to use it so they can set up gear ratios unless they want to instantly hit the limiter when they enable the DRS.

Thanks for the explanation, hope will see more passing in the race with KERS and this. I hope the passes won't feel how can I put it, artificial ? Anyway qualy one underway now.

Hugely disappointed by Heidfeld. Did he have a specific problem or was he just slow? Petrov put the car in P6, so the car is there. I think maybe Liuzzi should have got the drive instead of Heidfeld, even Kubica wanted Liuzzi.

HRT, Virgin and Lotus haven't done enough. HRT are really in the crapper (outside 107%, strictly they won't be allowed to race tomorrow), Virgin not impressive and Lotus doesn't impress - they can't heat up the tyres at all.

SebVet creamed it. What a brilliant lap, what a brilliant car. Webber is really in trouble and he needs to bounce back. Did you guys see Webber and Hamilton's faces when they stood there waiting for the weigh-in and watching the lap time screen. Lewis was saucer-eyed and Mark was shaking his head, mystified.

Sutil had an impressive spin and he kept it out of the wall. He got on the kerb while activating the DRS on the last turn.

Rubinho went wide on the grass and spun, Schumacher didn't make Q3. I am however impressed with Buemi and Cowboyashi, great work getting in to Q3.

Ferrari are not as good as I expected and Massa is even worse. Alonso can get a good result in the race, he is crafty and has a lot of capacity to spare to get to grips with race strategy.

The biggest news this weekend is however McLaren's comeback after an unreliable and slow winter testing.

Tomorrow is going to be very interesting, but SebVet in a Red Bull will take some beating.

Martin Brundle did state that he thought Liuzzi had made a mistake by driving for HRT during the BBC commentary. HRT are not doing so well but it looks like Team Lotus and Virgin have not improved much either. Encouraging to see McLaren on the first row of the grid, but that lap by Vettel was amazing - he seemed to also perfect the last sector whereas other drivers seemed to make mistake.
Alonso drove well but Massa's situation is dire - if he doesn't improve soon I can't see him lasting until the end of the season, contract or not.

With all the new rules and tyre situation here is hoping to another great year for Formula One.

HRT won't be allowed to race tomorrow. Maybe now the Carabantes will see what it takes to be in F1. The team needs more money and Colin Kolles have done a good job with what little he's got, but it is not enough.

Liuzzi should have been signed by Renault and he shouldn't have signed with HRT, but I don't think he was given a choice. He was screwed by Mallya as he was screwed by Marko when he was at Red Bull.

I think maybe it will be better for his image to just get out of F1 and race in another category where he can fight for wins.

Edit: Liuzzi is keeping a brave face.

So what do you guys think about the rumours that Red Bull's KERS is a smaller system only used for the start of a race? It is plausible, but even so they could have used it once in quali.

I doubt it, it's just the fact that Newey is better than dozen next best designers put together

As much as there were supposed new techologies to make passing easier, the race ended up being more of the same from last year. Adjustable wing seems like it does almost nothing. Few times was it used and seemed to make any difference.

So it turns out they didn't have KERS at all this weekend.

It was an interesting race. Perez did a 1 stopper and his times were competitive, very impressive. Petrov schools Heidfeld, very nice.

Alonso recovered from a bad start, Massa struggled, Button recovered from overtaking Massa outside of the track, Barrichello crashed into Rosberg, a Toro Rosso crashed into Schumacher.

Vettel was basically untouchable, Webber wasn't even close. Hamilton was in a well deserved second.
Top 10
Vettel
Hamilton
Petrov
Alonso
Webber
Button
Perez
Kobayashi
Massa
Buemi

Bit of a shame really, Sauber and Perez proved that a one-stop strategy may be a valid option in coming GPs. However in a way I wish they hadn't!
