DS Questions / Concerns

According to today's Nikkei BP Consulting reports, the Nintendo DS is already the third best selling system in Japan, and that's based on pre-orders alone.

The console, which isn't out until December 2nd in Japan, was beaten out only by the Game Boy Advance SP and PlayStation 2 (respectively) in total number of hardware units sold (or pre-sold) this week. Below the DS in fourth and fifth place are pre-orders for the new slim design of the PS2 and the Nintendo GameCube.

This report bodes well for Nintendo, and can probably be attributed to the nation wide tour the company is taking its new product on right now.

So, they have preorders in the tens of millions?

I think there is a slight mistunderstanding there! :D I'm gonna highlight it a bit.

Anyway i think the DS will sell out the first shipment immediately.

Anyone know what the response time on the DS screens are? I'm hoping it won't be a ghosting mess like the GBA screen was, especially if the games are 3D.

What ghosting mess on the GBA? There is no ghosting mess that i know of, at least not on the SP.

The ghosting was brutal on my non-SP GBA. It was alright for games like Advance Wars and Golden Sun, but Super Mario World was practically unplayable, which is one of the reasons why I sold it all back (lack of backlight not-withstanding). 3D games on handhelds are only going to make the problem worse unless Nintendo (and Sony) put in HQ screens.

Is the non-SP screen different? I don't know, however i didn't have any noticeable (let alone gamebreaking) ghosting on my SP with any game.

There's no ghosting on my original GBA either, none whatsoever. I?m pretty sure the screens are the same. I bought mine the day it launched in Europe. I guess yours must be defective.

Shrug, whenever mario moved it was a red blur, I'd say that is ghosting.

I've owned both the original GBA and the SP, no ghosting. Zurich obviously had a special version with a poor screen....

Either that, or I was spoiled by my Turbo Express back in 1990

Seriously, no one else has been concerned about response time on their GBAs in fast-paced games? I honestly am surprised by that.

Maybe you should try to find a good videogameshop that let's run some testing (in other words play mario world) on a GBA / GBA SP unit. THat would either confirm or refute your doubts.

anyway back to business:

Nintendo iQue Goes Online: Sin and Punishment on iQue and USB Online Pack coming next week
Fri Oct 22 2004 13:40:33 Hong Kong Time - Classics

After month of silence around Nintendo’s iQue, here is the long awaited iQue Update with some exciting news about the console. This will make iQue owners but also N64 veterans very happy as it's finally getting interesting.

Nintendo recently didn't only announce Sin and Punishment for the iQue (which is available at iQue Depots since a couple of days), they will finally ship the iQue USB Cable Upgrade. The magic accessory allows downloading new games, updating the iQue through the Internet, online play of iQue ported N64 titles and to communicate with other iQue owners. The cable is supposed to be available within two weeks.

Whether this development gives us an outlook how the NDS online functions are supposed to work or if this development is completely separate from other Nintendo (of Japan) developments, and if the online multiplayer modes are already built in into the previously published titles such as Mario Kart, remains unanswered at iQue Limited.

Well, we have heard that the NDS supposedly offers downloading games on a cart. Maybe the iQue is a large scale field test of Nintendo DS?
