Call of Duty 4: Modern combat trailer up

But I wonder how much of this is fluff or excuses for having limited dev time, budget, resources, etc.

We should keep in mind it has "only" been two years after Call of Duty 2, and they added another platform (PS3) to their development structure, and they got that version of the game up and running on par (for all intents and purposes) with the 360 version, which by itself is a pretty significant improvement over CoD2.

Maybe I missed something, but I didn't see anything about them shortening the game...

No, but it's probably planned from the start so that everything could fit on one disc (for business reasons). Whether it's big or small impact, the constraint has already been set. They happened to overshoot a little this time round.

A whole other discussion is when (if ever) they'd be willing to allow the PS3 version to have better textures. Right now, they probably didn't, but could they have? It seems so. And if so, why didn't they? A very strong dedication to getting the same experience on both platforms? Making the whole ratings thing easier?

Why does "it seem so"?

I don't see why they wouldn't - look at how many Xbox games looked a lot better than the PS2 versions. This gen wouldn't change that sort of thing.

As to whether they could, I think it's safe to say this game is pushing both systems very hard. Since PS3 has less available RAM, I think it's reasonable to assume there's no conspiracies going on here, it just couldn't do any more.

I'm surprised that less than a year into the PS3's release, we're seeing the release of what is said by many to be THE prettiest console game to date being released on the platform. Although the actual resolution/AA that the game is running at on the respective platforms is yet to be confirmed by Quaz51, certainly, the graphics have been said to be the same experience on both the Xbox360 and the PS3.

I'm surprised that PS3 being on par with 360 a year after release has now become a positive!

I guess it does speak positively for PS3 ports going forward.

Gametrailers vid is HD, much better ... I think I could see a different transparancy strategy (that is so often mentioned) on the PS3 and 360 versions in HD, with that giving a(n indeed hard to spot) slightly better look some edges that involve transparancy on the 360 version. Overall though, basically identical twins from the looks of things.

Here is a Vs video, PS3 has better rain :p

video #1
I thought that too, but apparently it doesn't:

"They both use the same asset, so it may just be that there is a bit of a contrast difference on the two consoles which makes it harder to see against the ocean. I know for a fact that it's got the same number of particles, sheets, etc etc."

"One of the things I did on CoD4 was the SPU version of the special effects system, and this level was one of my primary test cases."

I couldn't discern much if any difference myself. :p I'm curious though, to what part of the video did you see that particular difference? I thought I might have seen a slight shadowing difference on someone's shoulder, like they were filtering differently, though I might have been imagining things. I'll see if I can't get a screengrab.

edit:

It was more obvious in motion, towards the end of the GT video while your character was in the car. The 360 version looked like it had more shadow map filtering. It was nothing significantly better, but there did seem to be some sort of filtering going on.

edit2: here's a more direct comparison of the shadows I mentioned. Click to see full size.

Both versions flicker in the exact same manner in that video. These captures are just from different instances. There's no difference in quality.

The dust seems to hang in the air in the PS3 version or something else is going on that seems like the dust is hanging in the air.

It's minor but it really stood out to me, making the PS3 version seem more realistic.

There is one part in one of the clips where they were following the tank and on the 360 a bloke walking behind the tank and infront of the car is perfectly visible, on the PS3 it's like you are looking through the dust cloud at him.

I was thinking more of the electrical wires, which seemed more smooth on the 360.

There was a frame in the PS3 version where the guy's mole had aliased hairs growing out of it. 360 is clearly better ;)

Seriously folks, this is some real reaching on finding differences and seeming to miss the point that this is a great effort on all platforms.

Anyone know the framerate of the PS3 version (and I assume the Xbox360)? It's looking butter smooth and I may pick this up...

Cheers Phil
