Bad move IMO.

I think including HD-DVD would've compounded this dumb decision and made it idiotic. Like CarlB says, they would be tying their entire product line to HD-DVD, if it fails, they have a PR nightmare. And it would increase the price of the unit no doubt, this is MS we're talking about. No way they include HD-DVD for anything less than $550

Too many possible drawbacks compared to marginal benefits for MS.

The reason I see it as a bad thing is price plain and simple. The same reason I have viewed the PS3 as bad price price and price. If these way over priced machines sell it just sets a president for even higher prices next generation. MS could of atleast included WIfi, charge pack and lube for people who bend over for this new SKU.

Why is the $480 Elite overpriced to you and the $400 Premium not? It's just an $80 difference with some additional nice features. $80 for 100GB of more space, a HDMI port, and a HDMI cable just doesn't seem that bad to me (if I were a new owner, looking to buy a 360).

Ok ok, enough BD vs HD DVD discussion. As they apply to 360 and the PS3, fine - but let's not turn this thread into a discussion of the format war itself.

According to Xbox.com, canadian price is $550 for Elite, $499 for premium, pretty good deal....now I AM pissed!! (kidding)

This does beg the question....are they going to implement video marketplace up here by the time this SKU launches?

Because when you add in the cost of the charge pack you are right at the same price as the PS3 with less features. I do think 399 for the premium right now is pushing it.

I see. So, to you, the Premium is on the verge of being overpriced and the Elite crosses that point? That makes more sense to me. However, all things considered I think the Elite offers a good value. The $480 price, to me, gives far more of a psychological impression of being expensive than it actually is (its almost $500!, but really its only $80 more for some nice features). MS's accessory policy and pricing, however, IMO, are ridiculous. Particularly when comparing it to the competitions. Open standards, FTW. Proprietary is so last gen. :p

... a pricedrop was expected, not a price increase so it comes of as a very puzzling/stupid move.

patience ;)

I think some are just missing the big picture.

For one, this is NOT aimed at the people on this board who read and know all of these details and compare the minutia of what cables are included and transfer kits and whatnot....

in J6P mind who cares not about Blu ray or HD DVD:

from a VALUE perspective while standing in a store in front of the dispalys...

ELITE 120 $479 = PS3 60 $599
Premium 20 $349 > PS3 20 $499
Core $249 = Wii $249

from there you keep the Elite close to PS3 and drop the Core to $199 and Premium to $299 and still sell the same number of units that would have sold without this SKU but now absorbing a few other buyers that care about black, HDMI and more HDD space .... easy peasy, lemon sqeezy. :D

Let's be... more honest.

Elite $479+$30 play and charge = $519 vs. $499 + $10 HDMI = $519 PS3 (one has BD the other has extra 100GB).

If you are going to pit it against a 60GB, you better add $100 for the wi-fi (which I had to buy).

And remember, the PS3 doesn't have DL movies, TV, etc. so a huge HD is not really going to get you much and any OEM 2.5" HD can be added anytime.

For as much attention as you've been paying to my posts, I thought you'd know me better than this by now. ;)

I think the Wii is great, and I am currently seeking one myself actually... No luck yet though.

Sorry, I thought you just enjoyed PR gaffs. One of your quotes is about the PSP and DS.

I see your angle and for uninformed consumers, it makes sense. I disagree with that intent though. I'm hoping this move doesn't come back to bite them in the A** but we shall see.

Speaking of Sigs, that 2nd quote you have there is truly taken out of context. But I'm sure you know that already, which makes your intentions with that quote seem disingenuous.

Can you answer me? does the download and purchase of stuff like Movies, Series etc require XBOX Live gold? or is it free?

hey tkf, don't know if this was answered yet but yes all Movie/tv downloaded media is available for rent/purchase by Free Silver members (ie anybody with an X360 and Internet connection)

problem is so far it's US (or NA?) only. Although I believe that is changing soon so it's available WW when licensing gets ironed out.

United States only. Poor Canadians... (And Mexicans )

Grad - I don't believe it is. I think their intention was quite clear: to establish their product and their new region which they were selling it, as "elite" in contrast to the US. The dig against the US was just a slip up that happened to be caught by reporters.

But it wasn't a slip. Quote the very next sentence he says and it makes more sense.

If you take what's considered to be the most expensive and the least expensive – consider the US with its massive land and cheap people. Then you look at the UK – a little island where rent and rates are at an absolute premium, and the cost of people is a lot more.

Cost of people is a lot more? Is he talking about buying and selling people? If not, then the context you're implying is incorrect. He's referring to labor cost.

Seeing as I'm repeating myself in multiple threads I'll quote myself:

Why was Japan not used as a reference then, as the console is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper there?

I don't know why he didn't mention Japan (it may not have occurred to him immediately). I do know that he did mention the UK (his region) and the US. And that his reference was to cost of labor and real-estate. Unless you can somehow explain how the "Cost of people is a lot more" is in reference to anything other than the cost of labor or anything close to what you’re implying with your sig.

EDIT

But I can see this is going to go no where fast. You obviously aren't going to admit disingenuous intentions, and we'll just keep going off topic. So, I'll leave it at that. We agree to disagree.

Why don't you send him an e-mail and ask, stop beating this dead horse in two different threads. You know what he meant or are you just trying to be difficult?

You could get a HDMI cable for about $10.

I paid $7.99 ;) but ....when standing at the department store, the official SONY HDMI Cable for PlayStation 3 is hanging nearby at $59.99 so it looks like a good deal to J6P (if they make it clearly evident on the elite box that it's included).

because believe it or not most people pay those higher prices for cables since that's how all B&M stores have them priced
