Anybody with GTA IV problems?

Wow.. that list of steps is absurd. You can't possibly expect your customers to go through that!
Also, having to disable autosave, vibration, etc. is just crazy. Even if this fixes the crashing issues, it's just unacceptable.

I read on another forum that they were working on a patch, though. I hope that is true, especially for those who can't even get past the intro.

It sounds strange how some can play and others not and then the varying levels of problems amongst the unlucky ones. Isn't all consoles supposed to be the same HW and SW wise? It is not like PC where there exists a multitude of HW and SW combinations.

I don't understand it either. Seems like launch 60gig PS3s have the most problems, but my brother's is fine. Same thing with the 360. Most people I've heard of having crashes are using Elites. I don't know what the difference would be. THe only thing different between my Pro and an Elite is the hard drive size, I think. Maybe different drive vendors?

Apparently, R* suggested the following fix for PS3: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6190279.html. Xbox 360 one to be revealed later.

Nice find patsu.

Unfortunately for me, my troubleshooting spree took me through the vast majority of everything Rockstar mentioned (along with many more things not mentioned). I guess I'll try to skip the intro again and see if I can get into the menu long enough to disable the in-game options they mentioned.

Everything is built to the same spec and within tolerances, yes, but there are still variances between hardware. One would hope tight tolerances, the TRC, and the game cert process would be enough to ensure compatability, but there's always room for error it seems. :D

Alright, finally got home and tried their troubleshooting tips. Did all of the pre-game stuff they mentioned, started the game, installed, immediately skipped the intro, and couldn't even get far enough in the start menu to change a single setting before it froze. Oh well. I just hope a patch is coming.

Did you try a "clean" install? back everything off, wipe hd, default settings? and then install the game?

Boy did I. About 3 full formats, not quick formats. And during the course of trying to recovery my damaged backup data about a dozen or so quick formats the PS3 automatically does before restoring data, and then again when the restoration fails.

Thanks for the suggestion though. All are welcome and appreciated.

Just chiming in here. Got a launch US 60GB system that let me play for about 5 minutes the first time. Proceeding that, it would sit at the "Loading mission" screen. After multiple game data deletions and installs, it got to the point it wouldn't even let me start a new game. Contacted support and they sent an email with all of those listed suggestions. First one I tried worked like a charm, which was to disable the internet connection. I got to play for quite a while with that off. I exited out and turned the connection back on, and sure enough, froze up within a few minutes. I turned it back off and just played for almost 2 hours without any issue. I'm glad it worked for me, and hopefully it does for someone else, but it defeats the whole purpose of the multiplayer that I wanted to try!

No option for blur filter after all (in 720p mode which I imagine 90% of people play it in). Surely R* should know what options are available in the game

No wonder there are bugs is all I can say.

Damn, had my first lockup myself. About the mentioned disconnection of the net connection. The game tries to connect to game servers even in single player mode (it should of course). Maybe there is some bug hidden there.

That `s my issue as well. As long as I`m not connected to the net I can play for hours without freezing and stuttering.

30hours played on the PS3. No freezes. No visual bugs either so far apart from AI sometimes not being able to follow you when they should

For people with network connection bugs, what happens if you connect via wired connection instead of wireless ? (assuming you're on wireless now of course).

PS3 Version froze once on us (didn't even react to the PS button). Other than that no probs so far.

I have been playing for about 10 hours with no issues. I know I have not been logged into PSN last couple days. The first day I was playing I got an error and it kicked me out.

Today before I launched I did sign back in. It loaded, I hopped in a car out front and started a mission. Then it froze on me (PS button wouldn't function). Hard reset. Re-launch, froze at the first loading screen and I couldn't get in. Deleted game data, tried again, same thing.

Went into options, disabled internet connection, launched game and it worked right away.

So, I quit again. Enabled, started game again and it hung at the first loading screen. Disabled, and it worked.

40gb, Wireless. I don't have any ethernet ability close. I'll leave that for someone else that can do it easier. If no one else, I will move my PS3 into the other room and try.

Yeah, I suspect -- like someone else above -- that it's related to some programming bugs in the network code (e.g., exception handling, race condition when the network is slower than expected). Not all wireless PS3 are affected because some are close to their wireless routers.

If true, the same problem should surface if they trottle the network for the PS3 wired connection. I have no proof whatsoever, just pure conjecture... (R* fix it soon !).

I am kinda torned between yelling at R* for releasing buggy software and petting them on their back for pushing the envelopes. May be the press should reward developers who release rock solid code from day 1.

We are in the era of network patching. If we don't do something to reward the good guys, it is very possible we will go down hill from here.

Hope to be proven wrong though.

OK I've been playing solidly for 30hours+ and haven't encountered one problem on my 60Gb model. The controller issue turned out to be a yoghurt infection after the controller was chewed by my one year old!!

I have to say that I am impressed with the amount of life in the City, it truly seems to be a living breathing city.

Has anyone done any comparisons between the two versions to see if there is any truth in the rumour that the PS3 version has more going on? As in more cars on the road, more people on the streets etc?

I think most of the people on here have lives to be honest!
