And the neon gas problem in Ukraine. This is horrible.

Yea , things will get worse before they get better and hopefully it scares countries into bringing back industry.

About all the average consumer can readily get their hands on is a Series S. Been that way for quite a while. In a sense it's been the only game in town for months.

It's hard to make any generalizations without a full supply environment. Who knows when that will be at this point.

Oh BTW on twitter it's going around the MS paid a "pretty penny" for more Xbox chips this year. Makes sense with what we are seeing.

I'm not sure if MS paid a pretty penny or not. I think your going to see a lot more series s consoles because they are all around cheaper to source components for vs any of the other consoles and models. I did hear that MS spent a lot on 5nm fab space but I think that is a 2023 thing.

Number are lower for MS too compared to last year, but the Series S choice is paying for MS.

The second biggest neon producer is...Russia. This is crazy!

EDIT: And the third is China.

Typically in this type of scenario if a person considers PS5 and Xbox to be substitute goods (which they share over 90% of the major libraries with each other) I would think demand would shift to what's available, and in this case it's both cheaper and available.
There has been widespread user base transitions before, i.e. PS2 to 360 then 360 to PS4 resulting in surges/declines in the respective users bases relative to previous and subsequent generation - in relation the user bases on the other console. What is slightly different this generation is that backwards compatibility is now a bigger thing so those still wanting to play last gen games may need to re-buy some titles or lose them (platform exclusives). And this is why companies want you invested in their ecosystem, to make you think twice about leaving.

I think believe that being able to play with friends is one of the bigger sway factors but with cross-platform multiplayer becoming more common, that may become less of a factor over time.

This is true in the abstract, but certain companies, like Sony or Apple, have brand loyalty that bucks this trend. Unless, of course, the competition has some sort of feature or software that pulls people away. The obvious thing to look at is Gamepass, of course, but honestly, I don't know if I would buy it. Not for the core Playstation gamer who cares about the Sony exclusives, because while Microsoft has had a great year for software, they don't have that narrative rich 3rd person action adventure game that Sony has in spades. And Horizon just launched. A game in that very category.
Definitely, that's the main role exclusives play in the purchasing of a platform. I just think that a large majority of purchasers not part of the hardcore crowd may not necessarily care about exclusives, so when looking at mainstream purchases (parents buying for children) that may become less relevant if all they want to play is FIFA or NHL.

It would not surprise me if they do this if data suggested that the conversion to game pass was good and life time revenue from a customer was higher as a result of nabbing them earlier.

Yea, the move to cross play really took away some of the stickiness of ecosystem. That certainly hurt PS a bit more (given they are leaders in general) that they offer and cross play allows you to play with your friends still; people have options this generation that they didn't in the past. Vice versa if your friends list is all xbox and you want to switch to PS.

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/artic...ip-since-the-division-european-monthly-charts

Elden Ring is Europe's biggest new games IP since The Division in 2016, and the biggest game launch since Call of Duty: Vanguard in November last year, according to the latest GSD market report.

The second placed game of the month was Horizon Forbidden West. Forbidden West is the biggest PS5 launch outside of the Call of Duty franchise. 59% of Horizon's sales were on PS5, with the remainder coming on PS4 -- which just goes to highlight why Sony is continuing to release new games on its previous machine.

Overall, 13.56 million games were sold across European markets, which is 8% up over February 2021. The Physical market saw 5.9 million games sold (up 11%) and digital accounted for 7.66 million (up 6%).

In terms of European console sales, Nintendo Switch was comfortably the No.1 console. (Note: UK and Germany are the major European countries not included in this data).

PS5 and Xbox Series X continues to struggle with stock levels. As a result, for the first time, more Xbox Series consoles were sold across Europe than PS5s. This is primarily due to the availability of the Xbox Series S model.

The best-selling accessory was the DualShock 4 controller for PlayStation 4. The pad is just ahead of the PS5 DualSense at No.2, with Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons at No.3, and the Xbox Series Wireless Controller at No.4. The highest charting accessory that isn't a controller is the PS5 Pulse 3D Headset at No.5.

I do wonder if this is a sign that people are tired of waiting, or the hardcore is still planning to wait and the mainstream is now moving into next gen so the price point of S is the main driver here. This was certainly not the case for the last 12 months, Series S wasn't pushing as much for Series consoles.

Go Go Elden Ring. Yes, I'm an unabashed Elden Ring cheerleader. :p

Also, imagine if there were no PS4 version of HFW. Over 40% sold on PS4 in Europe.

And, nice that there was mention that implies that the main reason that MS were able to supply more XBS consoles into the channel is due to being able to make more XBS-S consoles. More SOCs able to be produced from the same number of wafer starts than if they were only making XBS-X SOCs. Also, fewer components required for the XBS-S console in some cases (no drive, fewer NAND chips, less material used for cooling and chasis, etc.).

Obviously that wasn't why MS chose to make the XBS-S before the generation started, but it ended up helping them with the world wide component shortages that is the current state of affairs.

SB

The drop of Ps5 stock is crazy in Europe

https://www.resetera.com/threads/just-130-playstation-5-were-sold-in-spain-last-week.561886/

They sold only 130 PS5 one week in Spain

https://vandal.elespanol.com/notici...ndida-en-espana-en-la-ultima-semana-de-enero/

Last year last week of january they sold 5050 PS5 in Spain

And tsince the beginning of 2022 between the number of games released and the people waiting the console they could have sold much more PS5.
Noted. I retract my statements assuming stock could not have dropped so quickly. That's pretty insane.

Go Go Elden Ring. Yes, I'm an unabashed Elden Ring cheerleader.
Might not be the game for me, but I'm always happy to see a new IP take off. Even if some sites don't quite see it as being a new IP.

I do wonder if this is a sign that people are tired of waiting
Wouldnt you?
Bad news for the people who haven't gotten a PlayStation 5 yet: Sony confirmed that the stock shortages would continue throughout 2022.

So you're unlikely to get one this year even if you wait, might as well get whats available, though still doesnt explain the relatively bad series S numbers (when you are the only thing available in town), I assume ppl just don't want it

I suppose. Depends on how much you want to game, some may be willing to ride it out. But to be fair it's been over a year now, when the games really start to arrive by the middle of this generation, if you don't have stock people are going to give in and get any console that is available.

Went to Walmart today and they had Series S consoles in the PS5 case. Made me chuckle a bit. The Xbox case also had Series S consoles in it. Made me wonder if they had too many Series S and put them wherever they could, or if they just wanted to make the case full.

Stocking up for easter i'd imagine. Got one of my nephews a series s for easter for his parents to give him. $220 after employee discount. Can't beat it for a 8 year olds first personal system

Have noticed Wal Mart+ has had Series X seemingly in stock for a couple days, which AFAIK is pretty unprecedented. At Stock X the price is down to 595 as well. Also reports of lasting X stock in Spain.

Wal Mart + is kind of WM's version of Amazon Prime, so it is a paywall and they have put PS5 and X purchases behind it for a while now ostensibly to deter scalpers AFAIK, but worth noting.

top 10 France 2021, shows how top heavy the charts can be #1 3x > #2

1 FIFA 22 (EA) 1.59 million units
2 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) 503,150 copies)
3 FIFA 21 (EA) 501,483 units
4 Call of Duty: Vanguard (Activision Blizzard)
5 GTA V (Take-Two)
6 Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Nintendo)
7 Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo)
8 Pokémon Brilliant Diamond (Nintendo)
9 Minecraft (Switch)
10 Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (Activision Blizzard)

fifa22 was even #12 best selling game in the USA last year. I would not be surprised if it actually sold more than call of duty worldwide
(yearly charts 2021 for europe)
Unlike shooters wheres theres plenty of competition, with football games there seems to be a market that could use more variety AFAIKS the only real competition is
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pro_Evolution_Soccer
Sure theres licensing but still seems like there is an opportunity there
