I know its an odd concept but not everyone wants a console sitting out in the open on furniture. Also in small spaces every bit of room counts. I mean these types of complaints date all the way back to the xbox original so it isn't new for the ps5 but its shared with all large consoles. They said the same with the xbox one also.
It's a choice and choice is valid but this these are examples of won't rather than can't. Many older consoles definitely were't designed for vertical orientation on shelves, certainly not the OG Xbox or the OG Xbox One - even if you had a load-bearing shelf!

I mean you can also fit a full tower with multiple graphics cards and cpus in it and 128 gigs of ram. Don't know why people wouldn't choose to put that in a 400 sqf home :)

Like think of it this way. When you were 8 years old would your mother want a ps5 sitting on a shelf next to her tv ? My mother doesn't even want to be able to see her sound bar and keeps putting pictures and stuff in front of it an complaining that she can't hear it.

I do see a different between somebody chosing to not want a console on a shelf and somebody not being able to afford several grands worth of a PC. If you live in a small apartment then you're already living a life with compromises compared to those who can literally swing a cat in their homes.

My mum was quite happy with our Atari 2600 being connected to the TV. She was pretty good at Asteroids, god rest of soul! Of course, the Atari had classy wood panelling!

I think we've utterly derailed SB's post, he will be very disappointed when he wakes up and reads this. :runaway:

I mean that isn't true at all. I have a good friend that lives in a 700 square foot apartment in Manhattan and he can easily afford a million dollar home in NJ by me. Life is about choices. You should check out some of those tiny apartment tours on youtube of japan and stuff. You will quickly see that every mm of space they can reclaim is filled with something they need.

Ha you with the atari was classy , it was all about the silver accents on the intelivision ! But my mother made us put it away after we played it all the time and then it went into the basement when they bought a new tv .

It's okay disappointing people is my super power , just ask my mother while we are on the topic lol .

Even if you have the space.... if you can have a smaller box thats always welcomed. One to two decades ago i didnt really care how large my pc's were, always went either full-tower (cm cosmos) or the larger medium towers. All for that easy access, maintanance and installation. These days i want small as possible, to the point its not so much larger than the PS5 is.
2001 Xbox was beasty large and heavy aswell, compared to even the launch PS2, not talking about the slim which fit atleast 10 of them in an OG xbox. Anyway i think its alot to do with price that the XSS is doing well there, that and availebility.

We in the UK have developed a sophisticated technology called shelves. It's how the Empire became so powerful and we will not share it with anybody!
Yeah lets not pretend that PS5 is a standard shape, has a standard footprint, and that pre-colonial shelves are capable of holding it's mass. Also, if the empire's shelf technology was so great, how did the colonies emancipate themselves and go on to create man's greatest inventions, duct tape and zip ties. 2 items you can use to repair your shelf when it fails to hold your PS5.

If you think the reason everybody doesn't live in a million dollar home is by choice you are literally insane.

Like everything shelves were built to last back then! Depending on your shelf, you can fit a PS5 easier on a narrow shelf than an Series X. I could put my PS5 on the check above my TV that solves my wireless headphones, controllers and a lamp but it sits next to the TV in my AV centre.

What I'm saying is, when you have limited floor space, you make use of walls. It's literally why shelves exist!

I was just giving an example. he could just as easily pay the same rent he is paying for a tiny apartment in the city and rent a house in NJ .

Like you guys just had a shelf drilled into the wall of your living room ?

And you think that is comparable deciding whether or not to put up a shelf up?

Ummmm... If we're talking about Japan and many East Asian countries, you've got your priorities all wrong. Yes, they have shelves, afterall the British did attempt to colonize the entire planet and spread their insidious shelf technology.

However, those countries have since exerted their independence from Imperialist Britain and have used the shelves for what they were truly meant to hold. Books. In this case manga. Shelves and shelves full of manga.

This is the way shelves were meant to be sold. :p

Not a true Asian, they are wasting too much space between shelves that aren't holding books or manga. :p Tighten it up there fella!

Remember my anecdote about staying at my mother's place in Japan in the 80's? I slept in the "spare" bedroom and 3 walls were lined with this with the only openings for the Door, Window, and closet. :p And that was for a 40+ year old high level Toshiba executive. :D

R.jpg

It's how I first discovered the Japanese fascination with Tentacles (Urotsukudoji manga, don't look this up at work!!!), Motorcycles (lots and lots and lots of motorcycle mangas and books since he loved to ride Japanese speed bikes), and various other things you didn't find in Western comics and graphic novels at the time. :p

The other thing you'll usually find filling shelves if they don't have just reems and reems of books is anime figures.

So, yes you are likely to find many many shelves in a small Japanese apartment. And, no, they aren't meant for consoles. :p Although that last shelf has a heretical non-book on the bottom. Probably a Gaijin. :p

Microsoft teaming up with retailers to offer a 5000 yen($34.00) credit on the Xbox Series S.
Last weeks numbers for the current gen consoles was abysmal.
  1. Switch OLED Model – 148,377 (2,525,961)
  2. Switch – 27,859 (18,666,760)
  3. Switch Lite – 6,640 (4,886,242)
  4. PlayStation 5 – 2,227 (1,649,691)
  5. PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 637 (264,810)
  6. Xbox Series S – 284 (165,246)

  8. New 2DS LL (including 2DS) – 74 (1,188,680)
  9. PlayStation 4 – 11 (7,819,860)

Correction in case you missed it. Its a 5000 yen credit not a discount.

It is a smart move for MS to push the pricing advantage they have.

I mean if I was MS I'd take some money and go to japanese developers and start getting some exclusives funding. I don't mean money hating already existing projects. I mean like what they did in the 360 era

If Microsoft wasn't already doing that before this gen's console came out, we would be waiting years, possibly until the next generation, to see the fruit of their labor. If you want to get exclusives at this point, money hatting makes sense when it comes to Japan. I know people hate it, and Microsoft has moved away from doing that kind of thing, but they needed to do that for the launch of the current console and need to do it now.

The good news is those exclusives should be more viable for Microsoft since any made-in-Japan Xbox exclusive will show up on Xcloud, Windows Store, Steam, and maybe even the Epic game store.

Hey if they started today instead of tomorrow its one less day we'd have to wait lol

Well, there's no shortage of PS5s at the moment, so I'm going to guess that the increased price combined with the effects of inflation have made the PS5 even more unattractive in Japan.

Also keep in mind that the Famitsu weekly sales numbers also include Taiwan and S. Korea. Non-handheld consoles just have a tough time in that region as they aren't nearly as attractive to game on as Phones, PCs and handheld consoles.

The previous week was particularly brutal for non-handheld consoles.

Looking at Media Create's partial breakdown of the 3 regions at the bottom of that shows that PS5 is at least somewhat popular in Taiwan. But that still doesn't help its hardware sales much with the increased price.

SB

Where? Just a few weeks back GEO - one of Japan's biggest video game sellers - introduced a bonkers policy that only existing PS4 owners could get a PS5!

Where is the stock? I had a quick google around and unable to find anybody with stock today.

edit: watching DF's podcast and John just said the same - you can't find PS5 in Japan - in the context of why Capcom may be brining the RE4 remake to PS4.

Interesting. They are readily available at Amazon at MSRP, but looking further they are sold out at Best Buy and Walmart is only showing scalping prices.

I had figured their stock situation was sorted but they are still unable to sell as many units per month as they were in 2021 and are still selling roughly the same number of PS5s per week as they were in Jan. 2022. Granted it's at least not as dire as it was during Feb. - June 2022.
