he duo of consoles seem to have found a Japanese audience, something the console only ever had during an early year for Xbox 360.

As a comparison, Xbox One reached 114,000 consoles during it's entire lifetime in Japan, and Xbox Series S/X has passed 318,000 sold units after less than two years on the market. If it can keep the pace up, it will beat the original Xbox, which reached 473,000 sold units in Japan during it's lifetime, while there's still a way to go before it passes Xbox 360 which sold 1,616,000 units in the country.

But there are signs pointing towards that it might be possible. Instead of dropping sales, Xbox Series S/X seems to be increasing speed in Japan, and last week was the best ever for the format since the launch, according to the analyst John Welfare who tracks Japanese game sales. 16,726 Xbox was sold in Japan, which in all fairness is still less than PlayStation 5 with 25,109 sold units and the beastly Switch with 113,530 consoles.

Still, it seems like Xbox Series S/X might be on track to do something Xbox has never had before, develop a real Japanese audience. Something that surely will improve the range of Japanese games available for the format

If sales keep increasing that is a good thing for MS. If this keeps up they will pass Xbox original / origin / first .. whatever in the next 6 months or so maybe quicker.

Are you sure ?

I had left gamestop by that point but my good friend worked there then as a manager. I preordered at his store the day preorders went up ( I had given him money to put down for me) and I got mine launch day but there were people on the reservation que that didn't get them for months and the xbox 360 as I remember it here in the USA took off from launch and never slowed down , the RROD stuff , The ps3 launch non of that really slowed it down.

Very lol. I had a notepad file tracking it.

Right out of the gate it's first 2 months 360 did 326 and 281k in November and December 2005 (must have been very short supply), where One did >900k both months in 2013, so One was 1.2 million plus ahead already after 2 months. And never looked back for years. Typically outselling 360 in Nov/Dec. It wasn't until 2018 vs 2010 that 360 started dominating. For example in December of 2010 360 doubled One's sales in December 2018, 1856k vs 920k. By Nov/Dec 2011 360 was doing almost 2 million each those months vs ~800k each for One in 2019. By the end of December 2019 vs December 2011 gen over gen 360 had pulled 5 million ahead.

Again people dont necessarily remember but 2010/11 where huge for 360. It was doing many non-holiday months over 400 and even 500k. Such as February 2011 535k, and June 2011 507k, in year 6.

Some people tend to forget the relatively massive influx of sales that X360 had late in its life due to the release of Kinect (holiday 2010). As much as core gamers and reviewers turned their noses up at it, casual games bought it up in the droves. A minimum 24 million (24 million as of Feb. 2013, ~10 million units per year) of them sold either as part of an X360 bundle or seperately to be used with an existing X360.

That was one of the key motivators for MS deciding to include Kinect with every XBO sold at the start of that generation.

SB

I fell for the Kinect craze too and bought it for my 360. What a waste. Great for party games though.

After the ps5 price increase, microsoft lowered the X price by 3€, just a demonstrative act, while the S is stable by at least a month a 268€.
Microsoft aggressively pursuing those people who will not give up that one cup of coffee to buy a console!

Chip shortage and recession helped that too i guess, seems they say its many 'first time xbox users', users that couldnt obtain a PS5 and hopped in to a cheap series s perhaps.

For Asia, price and size are even more important than many other places in the world. People like to complain about the gap between the rich and the poor in the US, but that's almost nothing compared to the gap that exists in most SEA countries between the rich and the middle class / poor people, when adjusted for cost of living.

Price I get, and I know properties in parts of Asia can be 'cosy' but I'd love to see the property that can accommodate a Series S but where a Series X or PS5 is too large! :runaway:

It is not uncommon to have an apartment in many Asia cities that is 200 square feet or less. It's why induction plates and single stove burners (natural gas or propane) are so prevalent. Anything to reduce the amount of space things take up inside.

Back in the '80's my mother's husband at the time was in upper management at Toshiba and they lived in a ~400 square foot apartment in Tokyo. It was pretty crowded in there when I would visit during the summer.

Yea its easy to forget when places like america have some bedrooms bigger than apartments in other countries. Series S is much smaller and uses less power to boot while offering many benefits over last generation systems . It's why I think MS will double down on shrinking the series S. It could prove to make it extremely popular

Is this still a thing? Most homes I have visited in Asia, maybe with exception of Japan would have had ample room for this gen of consoles. Heck it takes up less place than the karaoke stuff :D

I know its anecdotal and the homes I visited belonged to upper middle class or rich people. But those are also the ones that would buy a console...

I mean series s also allows you to do emulation and with gamepass a cheap entry fee into a lot of last and current gen games as well as a smaller foot print and less power usage

I think the point is, how has a room that can accommodate a Series S but not a Series X? I mean, how small space are people living in? You're talking about a few square inches. The money/cost-to-run angle is very easily understood - or indeed portability. I used to take my PS2 all over the place, and when I got the PS2 Slim, it was brilliant and so easy to carry around.

I am going to guess its the furniture that can fit in it and what can fit in that furniture

Lets be honest , the xbox series x is a sizable increase over the series s and the ps5 is a sizable increase on the xbox series x. Just look

I know in my first apartment the ps5 wouldn't fit in the furniture I had for the tv and it was a 1 bedroom. The series s would have easily fit.

We in the UK have developed a sophisticated technology called shelves. It's how the Empire became so powerful and we will not share it with anybody!

yea my furniture was an entertainment system. it fit a 360 (which is what I owned at the time) but It wouldn't fit a ps5

I know its an odd concept but not everyone wants a console sitting out in the open on furniture. Also in small spaces every bit of room counts. I mean these types of complaints date all the way back to the xbox original so it isn't new for the ps5 but its shared with all large consoles. They said the same with the xbox one also.
