All purpose Sales and Sales Rumours and Anecdotes [2021 Edition]

We have to go back to the PS2 era of consoles to remember a time when you could purchase a next gen console for $299 at launch.
As many ppl have said before, just typed into the inflation calculator for USA and got

$300 in 2000 is worth $484.23 today

hmmm more than I though, I would of guessed $400, but there you go folks, you're effectively buying today for the asme price as the ps2 was at launch

If you bought a PS2 from a scalper for $1000 you paid more back them.

Some people have very nice 1080P TV's and it was just a couple years ago when 4K really became the standard, not everyone is looking to rush out and purchase a new TV. The XS S offers tremendous value without the requirement of upgrading your display. The player still gets access to all the latest games with the primary caveat being it doesn't render them at 4K, but again, but many people that's not a big deal. We have to go back to the PS2 era of consoles to remember a time when you could purchase a next gen console for $299 at launch. Even if you would prefer to get the X model, with availability what it is, I don't see why you wouldn't purchase an S model now and get an X model down the road when availability isn't insane. For parents, an Xbox Series S with a gamepass subscription is probably the best bang for buck option in gaming. Im not an Xbox guy, but I cant deny the tremendous value proposition that Microsoft has brought to the table.
The core gamer loves power, and if the price points are somewhat close, quick calculations would show that XSX and PS5 are the better bargain.

There is a caveat though.

Both XSX and PS5 are locked in price until XSS and PS5DE can go down in price. And if you're MS or Sony, with the stock shortages as is, there's no reason for them to lower the price of the premium variants. The pressure on MS is to lower the XSS price (thereby increasing value and demand) to relieve buying pressure off of XSX and move more units. For Sony, the problem is a bit more challenging, PS5 DE Sony is already losing money, as they are $100 down in revenue but only from removing the drive. So if there are savings, it's questionable if they would allow PS5 to drop in price without taking a larger loss on DE.

Same with XSX, the lower it goes in price, the harder it crunches onto XSS. And if XSS can't go lower in price, then everything is somewhat halted in place until the lower priced SKUs can drop further.

The whole point of XSS is the fact that MS don't believe you can reduce costs the way you could in the past.

I suspect that storage capacity will increase before see heavy reducing of prices.

And factoring in shortages and that it doesn't look like it will improve any time soon, its not about either company not wanting to reduce prices, they just can't.

It actually plays into the XSS much more than MS had expected. Although I suspect they don't care which sells more, they just had projections.

You would say that but you have no evidence :p MS could have changed their shipping patterns but every sales # I've seen so far they ship about 2 X for every S. Besides that I strongly doubt S alone even if it outsold X, also outsold PS5.

Series S It's been in stock on Amazon for a few days. How many more X could they have sold and they missed out on is the question. Although given the supply constraints told in NPD, I guess not that many.

I thought there was a "good" supply of PS5/Series hitting the streets Just based on feel.. I guess I was wrong according to this data. Depending what you consider good anyway.

Well, people dying for a taste of next gen should be able to get an S anyway. Then sell it and get a full next gen console later is what I would do. Well heck I'd jus be working the internets til I got a full fat console in the first place knowing me.

The Series S is the top selling non-Switch sku for Amazon US for all of 2021. Its ranked 32 out of the top 100 while the PS5 is ranked 65 and the XSX is ranked at 96.

The PS5 outsold it on Amazon US for the months of October and November but the S is currently ranked 33 for the month of December while the PS5 and XSX don't show up in the rankings. The Series S might not be the most wanted Xbox console but it does a better job of being available. And a part of that is due to it being 1/2 the chip size and requiring just 2/3rd the gDDR of the XSX.

interesting.

Do you think stock was blown for black friday and there's nothing left for post black friday?

The UK had a big drop of Xbox Series X yesterday. The MS store was finally selling them (which loads of people, including me, were waiting for because they had a hoard of MS points). Took hours to finally sell out, which is pretty much unheard of. Would be interesting to know how many they sold.

Isn't Sea of Thieves included in PC GamePass? Why is it selling so much?

Yes it is.

Folks still want to "own" games they love to play, don't like anything other than Steam, and MS PC Store for GamePass used to be subpar (but it's getting better).

Can you ever 'own' online games? There is nothing you can do to prevent changes or regression of content.

Nope. That's why I quoted it, as some don't like "rental subscriptions" for games and would rather "own" games. We all know how "owning" various Destiny content has worked out for everyone, with them entirely removing paid content at times.

Right, so why not just eat the subscription of GamePass?
