I think it's more likely they are scratching their heads and going: WTF are those buggers up to now?Yup. I'm pretty sure the guys in Redmond are doing a happy dance now... )

Agree with the first part disagree with the second.
I think if retailers are/were really asking for only the 60gb ???: ), this was based on their shipments prior being heavily one sided anyway. They sell out as soon as stores get them so the suggestion that they are not in demand is laughable. Nice cover-up though.
But ultimately, the 20 GB version was definitely the better deal, especially when you want to slap a big HDD in.
When HDMI was announced for the 20 GB version, talk an this board and elsewhere was that that was the one people wanted. Myself, I'd want Wifi. And the memcard slots would be nice for when I eventually got a PSP (assuming that happened). But ultimately, the 20 GB version was definitely the better deal, especially when you want to slap a big HDD in.
I don't see a point in having an 80 gig model. Just stick with the 60 gig as the main default and hopefully drop it down to 499 sooner or later.
Yes, but that's not slick! A console with a carefully designed and engineered case to give an artistic presence, covered with all manner of wires and boxes...it's not right! The PSP can connect through a USB cable to your PS3, so you don't need the memcard slots for that.

Yeah its bollocks. Sony made about 20% of their shipments the 20GB model. They didnt even offer it over here. Still, if gets the 60GB price down quicker, I'll be happy as that is the one I'm getting.
The el-cheapo PS3 version, cost less to produce...
By $10-15 maybe, vs its retail spread of $100
I think the removal of the 20gb version is a bad move by Sony. You'd have to be a pretty hardcore gamer to buy a $500 console that has 2-3 good games out, because lets face it, right now your paying for potential and blu-ray.
If you want to actually sell consoles to casuals (and thats where "the money is at"), you have to price you product as cheap as possible. The el-cheapo PS3 version, cost less to produce, so you can price drop it accordingly compared to the 60gb.
Sony technically just alienated themselvesselves even further from getting market domination than before.
$10-15 bucks less?
Are you telling me that Sony can produce a wifi, a memory card slot reader, and get a 40gb bigger harddrive from their harddrive manufacturer all for $10-15 bucks?
Sometimes I wonder if they even care to "dominate" the market. I think they will be satisfied with Blu Ray winning and the PS3 edging the 360...
...with seemingly every strategic move they make this gen.
Now even with a $150 price drop due to BOM reductions this year, they are still looking at a $450 console. Much better than $600, but still hardly mainstream.
I understand their position and reasoning behind this move, but WOW. If nothing else, you have to admire their ballsy decisions.

edit: whoops... Sorry Diamond. Missed your post while I was scrolling through to see if anyone posted the "official" statements."Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of 90 percent in favor of the 60GB [PS3], so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly," said Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America's senior director of PR. "Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America."
...
"Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model," Karraker told GameSpot.
...
"We'll continue to monitor demand for the 20GB model, from a consumer and retailer perspective...which will be factored into any future Euro launch plans," a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe spokesperson told GameSpot UK. Both versions of the PS3 will continue to be available in Japan.
IMO this move is related to PS2 demand in each region.edit2: The kotaku link doesn't have the bits regarding other territories btw.
