20GB PS3 Discontinued

maybe it's getting to the point where the production cost between a 20GB and a higher capacity drive like a 60GB is getting to the point where it's negligeble... there are even some instances where it's more expensive to make an older, lower HDD as opposed to a newer, higher capacity HDD.

maybe the 20GB drive is being phased out from production already???

Agree with the first part disagree with the second.

I think if retailers are/were really asking for only the 60gb :)???: ), this was based on their shipments prior being heavily one sided anyway. They sell out as soon as stores get them so the suggestion that they are not in demand is laughable. Nice cover-up though.

i should have said that 2nd part was my opinion only.

i for one person would have bought 20GB model if it had silver stripe. black stripe makes design kind of unbalanced i should say (?), because i don't use memory cards (i don't have a phone etc), it has nice HDMI output, and overall, i know i wouldn't download much stuff to HDD

When HDMI was announced for the 20 GB version, talk an this board and elsewhere was that that was the one people wanted. Myself, I'd want Wifi. And the memcard slots would be nice for when I eventually got a PSP (assuming that happened). But ultimately, the 20 GB version was definitely the better deal, especially when you want to slap a big HDD in.

The PSP can connect through a USB cable to your PS3, so you don't need the memcard slots for that.

I've personally always preferred USB cables also for hooking up other devices, because removing a memory card is often a hassle. And then a memcard reader can be attached through USB as well - my gf has a xD card based camera which isn't supported by default (and which doesn't have a standard USB cable connection either, rather annoying - impossible to find a cable and it didn't come with one, some stupid offer she fell for ;) ).

But like I said before, I don't believe that there will be much in the way for Sony making the current 60GB version about as attractive as the 20GB version, simply because I don't think the extras cost that much more. I'm predicting that by Christmas, the 60GB version will be $449 or less (providing the dollar doesn't completely crash)

I don't see a point in having an 80 gig model. Just stick with the 60 gig as the main default and hopefully drop it down to 499 sooner or later.

The 80 gig is probably the 'positive news' counter to the 'negative news' removal of HW BC.

THE PS3 NOW HAVE 80 GIGABYTE HARD DISC DRIVE AS STANDARD!!!

(.... and software emulation of the PS2 ...)

DID WE MENTION 80 GIGS !!!!!

Yes, but that's not slick! A console with a carefully designed and engineered case to give an artistic presence, covered with all manner of wires and boxes...it's not right!

Yeah its bollocks. Sony made about 20% of their shipments the 20GB model. They didnt even offer it over here. Still, if gets the 60GB price down quicker, I'll be happy as that is the one I'm getting.

Yeah. The 60gb/20gb sold 9/1 because Sony produced them ~9/1. The 60gb, different memory cards box is Sony's "Mercedes" while the 20gb was their special model without gps and butt-massaging seats.

At least we can expect a better than 50% chance there will be a price cut in December due to recent console history. I still lean towards the PS3 staying at 600USD because if manufacture is effective the 600USD might bring them into break even territory at the end of the year.

Consoles do get price-cut within a year and the Holidays seem pretty ideal, but I am guessing that, say a 500USD price-point for the current sku will keep them red.

Consoles do get price-cut within a year

 All hail Lord Uttar and Quest for making me see the light. May Athena protect them.

I think the removal of the 20gb version is a bad move by Sony. You'd have to be a pretty hardcore gamer to buy a $500 console that has 2-3 good games out, because lets face it, right now your paying for potential and blu-ray.

If you want to actually sell consoles to casuals (and thats where "the money is at"), you have to price you product as cheap as possible. The el-cheapo PS3 version, cost less to produce, so you can price drop it accordingly compared to the 60gb.

Sony technically just alienated themselvesselves even further from getting market domination than before.

The el-cheapo PS3 version, cost less to produce...

By $10-15 maybe, vs its retail spread of $100.

That's why it's gone. People should stop equating install base with increased profits in stark black and white terms; there's a correlation of course, but it's not a correlation that exists in a void. If Sony is going to get back into the black in gaming, fact is that they can't afford to have the 20GB unit floating around, because it is simply too lossy compared to its more expensive sibling.

$10-15 bucks less?

Are you telling me that Sony can produce a wifi, a memory card slot reader, and get a 40gb bigger harddrive from their harddrive manufacturer all for $10-15 bucks?

That seems incredibly cheap, if so, the choice makes perfect sense.

Now price drop the 60gb version and give me Gran Turismo 5. And im happy :devilish:

Sometimes I wonder if they even care to "dominate" the market. :???: I think they will be satisfied with Blu Ray winning and the PS3 edging the 360.

The tricky thing about the price drop is that they would have had to do it for both skus and would come close to breaking even (maybe even profiting@end07) with the high sku, but lose and go back into the red on the cuts from the low sku. Last November the cost/loss estimates were respectively 20gb/805.85/-306.85 and 60gb/840.35/-241.35. If both reduce by the same cost, say, a magical 307, than Sony can break even with a 50-100usd price cut on the high sku but would get killed after being forced to cut the low sku by the same amount. I'm sure there are variables I'm forgetting...

That is what I'm telling you. ;) (ok, maybe $20, max)

...with seemingly every strategic move they make this gen.

Now even with a $150 price drop due to BOM reductions this year, they are still looking at a $450 console. Much better than $600, but still hardly mainstream.

The interesting thing to watch as well, is how this move affects their BR market. If Toshiba sees uptake of their $300 HD-DVD standalone (reasonable considering the price) it could drag this format war out even further.

I understand their position and reasoning behind this move, but WOW. If nothing else, you have to admire their ballsy decisions.

450USD seems like stretching it a bit, but who knows. I just wanted to emphasize, for some who thought keeping the 20gb would be good, that Sony will be hurt cutting both. I don't know if their decisions are ballsy or just necessary - like eliminating the lower sku.

"Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of 90 percent in favor of the 60GB [PS3], so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly," said Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America's senior director of PR. "Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America."

...

"Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model," Karraker told GameSpot.

...

"We'll continue to monitor demand for the 20GB model, from a consumer and retailer perspective...which will be factored into any future Euro launch plans," a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe spokesperson told GameSpot UK. Both versions of the PS3 will continue to be available in Japan.
edit: whoops... Sorry Diamond. Missed your post while I was scrolling through to see if anyone posted the "official" statements.

edit2: The kotaku link doesn't have the bits regarding other territories btw.
