Japan Sales Thread

Why would the Wii be near saturation? Are we supposing that the expanded market isn't as big as the core market?
Possibly. Just presenting a case here, not saying I subscribe to it, but the whole point with the casual market is it's casual. Lightweight. It repesents the difference between people who play a bit of crazy golf when on holiday, versus those for whom golf is a hobby and they spend considerable money and time on it. Even with an ability to appeal to a broader audience, is that audience going to like it enough to invest in it, or just play it when around a friend's house?

Also bare in mind that the core market of PS2's size and larger was made up of casuals and traditional gamers. Wii's piece of the pie may just be a slice of that, instead of in addition to. Well, obviously it's going to be some middle ground, attracting new people and some existing console owners. We have no figures on this though, how many Wii owners previously had a PS2 etc. But if Wii remains 'casual' and doesn't attract the hobbiest, to reach PS2's install base they'll need to appeal to a whole larger market that before ignored consoles. And for whatever new experiences Wii offers, at its heart it's still a video games machine. Of the billions of people who don't play golf, introducing a new variety of golf isn't likely to attract most of them. Of the billions of people who don't play video games, introducing a new controller isn't that likely to sway all of them. It isn't going to get people who like to read books to instead play Wii, or people who love to watch films instead play Wii sports, etc. Wii is still competing with all the other pasttimes and hobbies and interests out there, and I wouldn't expect it, or any hobby, to usurp everything else and become the de facto entertainment. Every hobby is going to have a limited portion of the masses partaking in it. How large Wii's part could grow to was never known and that was Nintendo's gamble. Maybe it'll be bigger than PS2. Maybe it won't. I don't see anything on paper that suggests it should be, only that it could be, if the unpredictable general populace go that way or not.

I wouldn't bet on that too heavily. Especially with the world wide economic downturn hitting Japan quite a bit harder than it is hitting the US.

Japan has been in an economic recession for allmost 20 years now, hasn't stopped them from buying consoles before. + PS3 outsold Wii last week.

I dont think you can apply economic recession as an explanation, atleast not now. Maybe if the crisis gets really really bad in a few years, this variable might have more explanationary power.

I've heard tons of theories to explain why Japan's sales look the way they do. For instance, I've heard explained that the reason portables are trouncing consoles so badly is because it fits better into the Japanese lifestyle. This doesn't really explain why every console before this generation seemed to do fine.

As the the PS3, it seems like the PS3 has had a series of titles announced for it. Sure, none are particularly huge, and are probably on tight budgets, but either Yoshida is finally doing something or publishers have noticed that PS3 games don't sell that poorly. A lot of them do a lot better than Wii titles.

And the PSP has certainly seen a resurgence. Again, a lot of small titles for it. Probably nothing we at B3D would be interested in, but again, maybe SCEJ's woken up and/or publishers have started to understand what sort of titles sell on it.

What the !?

14. [WII] Wii Fit (Nintendo)

Wii Fit @14 , no Wii games at top5 , only one Wii game at top10 , PS3 took top 2 spots , PS3 has 3 games at top10, PSP has 3 games at top10 , PS2 sells as much as X360 , PSP sells as much as DSi and PS3 sold 1.5 times of Wii ?.. What the hell is going on there ?..

FFXIII demo is out in april rite? Maybe some are picking up ps3 in anticipation for that.

Also there are some great games already on PS3 and the recent release of Yakuza 3, while maybe not generating all these sales on its own, may have tipped people over the edge in combination with all the other games before it.

Actually up until this latest world wide economic downturn they were having a boom of sorts which coincided with China's increased consumer consumption and the US doing relatively well after the slump around 2000-2003.

Prior to that however it was in a bit of a holding pattern with slow growth after the recession in the early 90's.

But yes, hamstrung with rising labor costs (compared to the 80's when they were closer to 3rd world labor costs versus post 90's as it climbed to US levels) and high taxation (approaching EU levels) Japan similar to the US has started moving much of it's manufacturing to other countries (primarily to other oriental countries). Limiting its growth potential.

However, with China's increased consumption as well as slight increases in consumption in the rest of the world, it HAD been going through a boom the past 7 or so years. Which lines up quite well with PS2...

The Wii doesn't have this benefit. Although it did benefit from a lower launch price. Launching also when Japan was at the height of the economic boom. And now the economic recession is hitting Japan Hard. Very very hard. Much harder than anything they've been in for the past 50 or so years. The current recession in Japan is far worse than anything experienced in the 90's for example and the impact is really starting to hit.

Regards,
SB

Haven't you been taking any notice of these charts then? PS3 had a recent surge in sales a couple of weeks ago. Obviously that's going to be represented in the game charts at the moment. Just as Wii's recent down turn in sales will be. Having said that both Wii and PS3 are more or less settling towards similar sales. PS3 might have been at 40,000 a couple of weeks ago, but it then went to 28,000 and is now at 25,000, so it seems to be leveling out towards 20-23,000. Wii meanwhile took a pretty bad downturn but is coming back up towards 20,000. So lets not get carried away. Its no surprise that PS2 sometimes out sells 360 either, apart from the odd week its a massively unsuccessful console over there, the XBox brand always has been.

Plenty of reports claiming that the PS3 has hit 3m and the 360 has hit 1m. Note that these reports are from Famitsu/Enterbrain, NOT Media Create.

The Media Create figures stand at (pending w/b 23/3):
PS3: 2,947,758
360: 969,119

At the current sales rate (which is trending downwards), it will be another 3 MC releases before the PS3 hits 3m (w/b 6/4), and another 6 before the 360 hits 1m (w/b 27/4).

The first such release (23/3) is imminent.
