Japan Sales Thread

Then why not post the numbers? I'm sure people will be interested.

Oh I dont have them, but I believe in the GAF sales threads they have been mentioning PS2 was selling 2-3X weekly rate what Wii is at this comparable point.

Not at all difficult to believe given Wii has been averaging ~20k for the last 4 weeks or so, and 12k if those new numbers are to be believed.

Those have got to be fake..if they are true, WOW.

The Wii's current support, performance in game sales and now hardware performance (as well as general console performance) have made NeoGAF MC threads a great read. You can pretty much spot people in every single one of the Kubler-Ross stages of grief. :D

Yep, Yakuza 3. Apparently it sold ~350-380k first week, which is the best result for a Yakuza game so far. No idea if it'll have legs.

Usually RGG games have got legs, but with the PS3 user base mainly made up of core gamers, legs have been sorely missing from PS3 games as evidenced by MGS4 or this page in general:

http://www.japan-gamecharts.com/ps3.php

Take a look at the ratio column, generally speaking a ratio of 60% or more indicates mediocre to poor legs, while 30% is very good.

Of course, with PS3's 3rd party support being so staggered, and with SCEJ's apparent adversity to releasing games this generation, it's hard to really compare the average legs of a PS3 game to a PS2 game. I mean, the list soon peters out to games that sell under 100k. Do those games have poor legs, or did they just sell poorly?

Different set of numbers, also not the actual MC/Famitsu numbers yet:

DSi 38700
DSL 12000
Wii 18000
PS3 36100
PS2 5000
PSP 37700
X360 13100

Not quite as dire for Wii.

You should say HD consoles, not PS3. The data for the 360 is the same.

MC numbers:
01. [PS3] Yakuza 3 (SEGA) 372,000 / NEW
02. [PSP] Shin Sangoku Musou MULTI RAID (KOEI) 219,000 / NEW
03. [NDS] Mario & Luigi RPG 3 (Nintendo) 52,000 / 307,000
04. [WII] One Piece Episode 2 (Namco Bandai) 45,000 / NEW
05. [NDS] Game Center CX: Arino no Chousenjou 2 (Namco Bandai) 44,000 / NEW
06. [NDS] Shounen Sunday x Shounen Magazine Nettou! Dream Nine (Konami) 23,000 / NEW
07. [PS2] King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match (SNK Playmore) 19,000 / NEW

10. [WII] Wii Fit (Nintendo) 16,000 / 3,277,000

Star Ocean dropped off quite a bit. It might not break 200k so soon... and maybe it won't beat Blue Dragon in sales. (But it probably will.)

It's even worse for 360 games.

At the end of the day, legs really come down to installed base, and the PS3/360 installed base in Japan is pretty low so it would take something of a miracle for a game to show any kind of legs on either of these consoles. Especially PS3 where the cost of entry is still a huge barrier for many people. The classic example of a game selling consoles is Monster Hunter Portable, PSP sales in Japan were pretty anaemic before this game, but ever since then people buy the PSP just to play MHP2G because the game is that awesome and the price of entry is low enough to warrant a purchase for just this game. For PS3 this is not the case, RGG3 could be the best game in the world, but it still won't shift the same number of consoles as a big game on PSP could.

We should keep in mind that the current PS3 price is still above what the PS2 launched at and we are over two year into the life of the console.

PS2 starting price was much higher though. Imo Nintendo needs to do some miracles if they want to sell over 22 Million Wiis in Japan, especially when it seems that handhelds have risen to be way more popular there. I don't see it happening.

PS2's starting price was higher, but comparative affordability isn't the only issue. There's also the issue of people possibly expecting a price drop and waiting on that before they buy. As well as any price drop simply causing impulse buys, which isn't usually sustainable on its own, buy it certainly doesn't hurt to get a console through a slow period.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Wii was selling a lot less week to week currently, however that's no reason to assume its true based on hearsay (just look at the supposed sales numbers above..). I'd be interested if anyone has the numbers. Mainly to see at what point Wii and PS2 move apart, if indeed they have, and how that correlates to the time of PS2's price drop.

So no one is impressed that the PSP sold about 40K? That seems pretty good...doesn't it? Granted, that's only half of the total DS sales (DSi included) but still, that's not shabby. What does the DSi retail for in Japan?

(note: I don't track sales threads regularly, so I don't know it's week to week sales numbers).

40k is quite respectable, but it's down YoY, and this despite there actually being PSP software.

Well, this isnt EXACTLY what we want but I was able to come up with a launch aligned graph showing PS2 moving ahead of Wii recently:

linecompare.php

I got it from here, where you can make your own charts:

http://garaph.info/linecompare.html

It seems in general PS2 and Wii are comparable sales to this point in there life cycles (another factoid I found from one of the GAF sales nuts sites was that Wii at 116 weeks is at the same sales PS2 was at 112 weeks) but PS2 is pulling ahead right now.
