Xbox Showcase 2023 (June 11th)

If they show Fable, and it looks good, and Starfield looks good, I will be very happy.

My expectations are low. Don't let me down, Microsoft! This is an easy win. I will be happy if Starfield is good and 60fps on Series X.

I dunno about that, I'm expecting it to be very CPU load bound that a solid 60 on console would be rare.
What have you seen that suggests this? Based on what I've seen, Starfield looks like an iteration of Fallout 4's engine which runs crazy well today's hardware, so unless they fill the universe with cheese wheels and sweetrolls I don't know what could bog down the CPU.

Bethesda's engine is a long way from perfect, but it gets a lot out of the hardware.

Nothing.

Just my "gut feel" that a current-gen upgrade to that core engine will take things to the next level with simulations, more extensive and complex subsystems and more going on all at once in larger area than before so it doesn't feel like you just walked into a zone that was previously asleep / paged out.

I'm thinking maybe they have an unlocked mode that's 40-60 but with spikes, so VRR very much needed and hope the frame pacing on inputs is smooth.

I will be extremely happy to be wrong if they have a locked 60.

Is this still creation engine? Or did they move away from it?

If the scope is much larger, may make sense to completely remake sections of the engine to support the game

The prior demo was struggling to hit a solid 30fps, so I wouldn't count on a 60fps option at launch. If I'm not mistaken, DF believes the game will be 30fps at launch, and a developer at Bethesda mentioned they were aiming for a native 4K/30fps experience.

From a resolution and performance level, the footage released targets a full 3840x2160 level at 30fps on Series X. It would be of great benefit for the team to also offer a dynamic 4K/60fps mode, which would go a long way and help alleviate the well-founded worry of Bethesda games struggling to hit that 30fps level. Fallout 4 did have some issues on Xbox One and PS4 back in 2015, and although PS4 was worse at the start and later patched, both remain with some impactful sub 30fps sections that did affect your enjoyment.

I’m also expecting 30fps. I would be pleasantly surprised if they released a performance mode.

The only way to get that leap in graphics: 30fps mode and double that frame time for goodness.

Though I’m also not expecting Starfield to be breaking barriers in graphics, not typically the MO for Bethseda.

Agreed, but we know from endless developer reveals that optimisation is the final phase of games.

Various DF folks, including Richard, have expressed a view that some current generation console games will eventually revert to 30fps as well, but this seems to ignore the expectation of performance of console games and also feels more like a performance expectation relative to what is being being delivered on PC game ports.

From my perspective, this seems to overlook that many PC ports exemplify the complexity of diversified hardware on PCs , along with whatever the hell is going on with modern Windows APIs and the general lack of code parallelism, which seems to be much less of an issue on consoles, possibly because it's a knowable CPU/GPU target.

Even with starfield they have a good 2 months to iterate on performance and bug fixes over what we see on Sunday. I will be playing on pc and hope its a good port but hopefully there are multiple performance profiles for those on xbox to choose.

I'm hearing price drops are on the board for xbox this year. not sure if it will be at the showcase, more likely in time for the holiday . Heard $70 on the series S and new sku for either this holiday or early next year for the series x with no optical drive at $400 with 1TB while the disc version goes to TB.
Series S bundle listed at BestBuy for $240.

Shit was I off by $10. If its announced as the new offical price I think we can give this one to my sources right.

Looks like it's a sale, on a different pages it says "Deal ends in 14:24:00" and counts down.

Yea could be limited time only. Or clearing out old stock for new bundles announced today or released today. I heard the price drop would happen before the end of the year. So we might have to wait a bit longer.

OK, I'm actually going to make some time to watch this. Not going to get my hopes up. But there's some developers that I'd love to see what they've been working on.

Also, probably not going to happen, but I'd love an "out of the blue" announcement of Age of Mythology 2. :p MS make it happen! Please!

Regards,
SB
