Xbox 360 price drops by $50

I never even mentioned that post. I have no problem with that comment at all.

Thank goodness, you had me worried.

As regards the price-cut, MS will push the addition of HDMI as value-added, and there are many gamers who will appreciate its inclusion.

There's always 'winner' and 'losers'. Mutual cohabitation? Different strokes for different folks? Nope; it's a race, apparently. Do other industries have this? Do car forums post sales figures and make frantic debate over sales? Do engineers post of the latest figures on which bridge types are the most popular? "Suspension are growing far faster than cantilever bridges. Anyone who builds a cantilever these days is a loooooo-zzzzeeeerrrrrr!" Has anyone heard of mobile phone purchases following sales trends to determine which phone to buy?

Every other market is different as console installed base directly relates to what games will be available on the platform. You can see this same sort of behavior in hddvd vs bluray as this "battle" is very similarly tied to future support of the platforms.

To a certain point it doesn't matter and devs will make games for the platform as the platform gets enough numbers to hopefully cover the costs of porting or even creating an exclusive.

Until that userbase is reached though, the platform's future library is a big unknown. Also if the gap between one platform is too large over another, devs may not make the effort to port (or port well) a title as the lead platform has control over a large enough percentage of the market to sustain the devs sales target.

This gen it seems most devs will have to account for both ps3 and xb360 as they will both likely be very close in WW sales in the next couple years. In fact, with the ease of development on xb360, one would have to wonder why a dev wouldn't at least port their title over ... unless there were other reasons not to.

Still, the NA market could have been 360's if MS played their cards right. Shame.

They've still come a long ways from xb1 though and their platform is a viable alternative to the monopoly of last gen. How devs treat these platforms from this point forth will be interesting to keep an eye on.

I still haven't seen the level of support I expected for Wii yet... Seems devs were caught off gaurd at launch and then fell under the "well it's a fad that will soon pass" train of thought and will be caught off gaurd for the second Christmass in a row. Hopefully strong xb360 attach rates make up for their lost revenue...

It's hardware sales we are talking about. People don't generally compare say bike (Wii) sales and sedan (Xbox 360) sales (TheChefO's point).

Movie box-office would be closer to game title sales instead of game console sales.

Again, that just shows that the media may not care about these (technical) distinctions.

Probably will after they can ensure the channel is cleaned out (Oct?) they may do some ad campaign but really what a waste (HDMI).

Also they will likely not have a seperate MB design for core so it is interesting that they stated they won't include hdmi. They may disable it (seems it would cost money) or they may temp cancel the sku. Wait for the ability to include cheap flash and cooler running more refined 65nm and reintroduce the core as a redesigned slimer unit on the cheap (ala pstwo) with a popup lid and all. Probably sometime next year.

In the meantime they still profit from higher margins on premium and elite while staying clear of the Bottom of the price bracket for nextgen. By the end of 2008, Wii demand should dropoff (a bit at least!) and should push Nintendo to drop their price, thus allowing MS to come in at a similar price (maybe slightly more expensive) and start to capture some of the mainstream market without dipping below the Wii price (which is still supply limited anway).

Just a little local observation at my Walmart. The day before the price cut they had 2 Elites and 3 Pros and 0 Cores. Day after price cut, all 3 Pros are gone. I can't remember the last time they were sold out of Pros. BTW, I'm in a small town of about 8000 people. I think that's speaks a lot about how the price cut is doing here.

I'm driving across the border to Atlantic City in September,I might see if I can find an HDMI Premium and pick one up. *crosses fingers that I don't another dud*

Its rather obvious why this only happends for consoles, because number of console sales directly determines how much games, how much fun your going to have with that particular console.

(But to answer one of your questions there, yes, Car forums sometimes debate over sales numbers, usually its some Audi fanatic trying to convince the BMW and Merc hordes that Audi is just as good)

Not obvious to me, I'd never really thought about that aspect. I think it has more to do with the fact that consoles are (used to be?) social items and are put on display, so comparisons/conflict/pride is a result.

I find auto forums rarely use sales figures in any sort of debate, because vehicles are in a difference expense category. In fact, most auto forums that have the most discussion are ones that are expensive (either to purchase or after modification), and have some sort of level of rarity. You don't usually see Camry owners in a heated debate about why their vehicle is better than some other competitor.

Seems to me any product where hardware determines software sales, have this sort of 'battle' for install base.

- PC vs Mac
- Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD
- VHS vs Beta
etc.

In the console space it's exagerated, because this is a cycle that continually repeats every 6 years, and a dominant platform usually emerges within 2-3 years.

Well somewhat related news: Amazon has two different entries for Pro now, one with HDMI and one w/o HDMI. They are both priced the same, but my gut feeling tells me that they are going to drop the price slightly once more to clear out the ones w/o HDMI.

I'll spare the life story and simply say that Fry's "didnt" have them (more like the lazy ass employee didnt bother checking the fresh shipment  )

Now im trying to call Best Buy and no ones answering *sighs* I dont want to drive halfway around the world again only to find out that they "dont have it"

:???:

edit: Circuit City(or the one I called anyway) doesnt have it either. They(CC and Frys) keep thinking im talking about the Elite when I say HDMI -.-' gg MS :devilish:

My Core is borked; and no, it wasn't the RROD - it was self inflicted, don't ask for more details cos I won't spill the beans. It's been out of action for a few weeks. :(

So now I have some wireless controllers and a pile of games I can't play. Just had a quick look on Amazon and they had listed the Elite for £330 - Premium was listed at £280. God knows where I get the money from, because I'm not actually that well off, but I thought this is reasonable considering what my PS3 cost me.

I'm HDTV less - although expecting to make the plunge either later this year or early next (GF wants a holiday first - sheesh!).

The reason I never joined Live was:
1) I resented paying...
2) I never got round to getting a HDD for the Core

Sorry, I could probably find this out for myself (but posting from work)... does that price reduction in the thread title only refer to the US? What about us Europeans? Is there likely to be further revisions to the Core or Premium?

What I'm thinking is that I need(!)* a 360, I'd like to future proof with at least HDMI and finally I need a HDD to... I dunno, feel grown up. Or something. Any help greatfully appreciated. Alternatively, don't answer and when I get home I can read the thread or do some Googling.

*In case you were wondering, yes this is all Bioshock's fault.

The price drop could very possibly come to other regions. But I expect the revisions will take longer to show up than in the US.

For example, the Xbox1 in Japan never fully sold it's launch day allotment of 1mil units. That means they never built new units for use in Japan since it's launch. If you buy a Xbox1 in Japan today, it would have been from the exact same batch the guys who bought on launch day were buying.

If the JP Xbox360 allotment was also 1 million, hardware revisions are still potentially years away for Japan. :( And it means they are still essentially selling extremely unreliable launch day consoles in JP.

Stock needs to sell out in order for HW revisions to start showing up.

This can´t possibly be true, can it?
I mean the cost for having that stock laying around for one and a half year would be huge.

The price cut is as of now US only. However, there're some rumours regarding a European price drop during the Games Convention in Leipzig which takes place from Aug 22nd-25th. So we'll know pretty soon if there's any substance to that

Thanks Stefan. Thats par for the course for price adjustments so I'm not too beat up about it.

Now to do some research on HW revisions. I always get burnt by those.
