Starting from this http://gemaga.sbcr.jp/archives/2006/09/xbox_360_1.html entry, this blog by a game magazine "GeMaga" editor in chief reports about Xbox 360 Media Briefing held in Japan today.

They announced

Xbox 360 HD DVD player = 19,800 yen (169.01$) on Nov. 22
DOAX2 = 9,240 yen (78.81$) on Nov. 22
Core System = 29,800 yen (254.16$)
Blue Dragon = 6,800 yen (57.98$) on Dec. 7
Core System with Blue Dragon = 29,800 yen (254.16$)

plus other peripherals.

Also did presentations about other games with little info (Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon had a gameplay presentation from the demo).

What does DOAX2 come with that makes it 80 bucks? o_O
Niche goods have to be priced higher ;) It's 1,000 yen higher than DOA4.

The Blue Dragon pack is an interesting effort which shows how much MS is committed to it. It's cheaper than Wii + Zelda.

they also announced that with the fall update, all 360s (core/premium) will be able to display 1080p on games and movies through component or vga.

if this is true, I wonder how sony will react and maybe clarify if the 499eur ps3 will be able to display movies in 1080p.

They are supposedly claiming 1080p output with the HD-DVD add-on but aren't explaining if that's through the component outputs in the X360.

Both EGM editor Shane and 1UP Editor Garneett have nice little write ups of the event in their blogs

A longer DOAX2 video, with more CG was shown (and, for what it's worth this one doesn't look like it's restraining itself in the least. Boob jiggle was back at max and the bikini size was down to Rio de Janeiro small.)

I'm totally digging Blue Dragon. It's absurdly cutesy and probably won't appeal to the U.S. 360 crowd, but its colorful visuals, snazzy battles, and distinctive Toriyama characters all work together perfectly. I was especially impressed by the lighting and depth-of-focus effects. It's a really great looking game in person.

According to Engadget, there will be a software update to do software upscaling for games and movies.

Hmm, if you have a 1080p display, you're already going to have a scaler.

Question is, which will have the better scaler, the one in the display or the software scaler in the X360?

Scalers in TV's are complete crap. The 360 does a much better job of upscaling DVD from what I've seen on a few LCD TV's.

But apparently a lot of TVs only take 1080i through component inputs even if the cables can carry 1080p? Like those upscaling DVD players which will only upscale via HDMI/DVI?

So in the end, the TV may upscale as well.

Most 1080p displays are probably designed with the expectation that they will have to upscale a lot of 1080i and 720p sources (and 480i, blech), since most HDTV content is at those resolutions.
