World Cup 2006

Unlikely for something that was the referee's fault.

There couldn't have been a rematch and it was the player's fault as well. The match would have to be decided by committee decision. And it wouldn't have ruled against Australia in that case. Simple as that.

It's not that simple. A referee's decisions are very rarely overthrown, even when he decided against the rules. If Croatia had scored another goal, they most likely would have gone through.

No, it wouldn't have been replayed. Due to the time constraints of the WC tournament, it would have been ruled by a committee. Thus turning the hypothetical 3:2 for Croatia in an 0:3 against them.

Absolutely impossible. The only viable and acceptable solution would have been replay the match: any other solution would have left open the door for legal actions.

I can't see that there would have been a replay, nor would the result been overturned if Croatia had scored.

Although rare this sort of muppetry isn't unprecedented, I can recall at least one other game a few years ago where a player was yellow-carded twice and played on for several minutes before the ref realised he should be off the pitch.

Also if you look at the outcome in terms purely in terms of the number of men on the pitch there's not a great deal of distinction between this situation and another in which a player should have been sent off but wasn't due to any other kind of mistake by the referee. In both cases there's a player on the pitch who shouldn't be there according to the rules of the game, but games aren't generally replayed in the latter circumstances.

Poll is a muppet and he's getting crucified in the press over here. I doubt the crowd at his first few Premier League games next season will let him forget it in a hurry either!

It does cast some of the comments earlier in this very thread regarding referees from the minor nations into a different light.

Also amusing to contrast Blatters comments regarding this compared to after the Champions League final. Then: "Totally inexcusable!", now: "C'est la Vie, we're ony human..."

There would not have been a rematch. Whether or not a decision would have overturned the result, I don't know. But there wouldn't have been a rematch. Simple as that.

The Rules state that in case of a technical error of the referee (like this one, or, for example, allowing four substitutions instead of three, and so on) the match will be replayed in case of official protest by the team that's "suffered" the error. No question about that: it has already happened (a few months ago in an International match) and will happen again. The FIFA itself can't overrule the rules of the game.

Half time 2 - 0 and a red card for a swedish defender. The ref isn't exactly top notch. The Germans are playing very rough on Freddie Ljungberg and getting away with it.

Oh this is horrid.

Germany advances to the next round.

Issaksson (sp?; swedish keeper) played the game of his life. Awesome saves.

Meh! Poor play by the Swedish team, the worst defending since -98. Team captain Mellberg needs a stern talking to for his junior behaviour when the goals fell.

OTOH Klose, Ballack and Podolski, challenged the swedish keeper Isaksson time and time again who in turn played brilliantly. The match could have ended 3 or 4 to nil had it not been for him.

Actually no. He's always that good. It's just that normally he doesn't have that much to do.

Germany played really well. I'd count them among the favourites now.
They play the winner of Argentina - Mexico. With the way Argentina have been playing, Germany will deserve their place in the semis if they get there.

Argentina 2 - Mexico 1 (extra-time). Mexico played beyond my expectations and gave a tough fight to Argentina. Argentina were playing too safe and weren't willing to take risks. Was referee partial towards Argentina?
