World Cup 2006

Not a great performance from England but luckily Ecuador were much worse on the day. Good goal from Beckham. Pitchside temperature was apparently 36 degrees celsius so you can see why it wasn't a high-tempo game - that's hotter than any of the matches in Japan/South Korea in 2002!

The only reason I can think of that so many of the England players are off form is because they are utterly clueless as to the tactics Sven wants them to employ in any particular game. It must be said that I also think Sven is utterly clueless as to the tactics he wants to employ! I'm getting sick of the pundits here praising Lampard because he was useless once again. Scuffed all his chances for shots and wasted a few chances to set Rooney up with poor passes. He's the new Paul Scholes - sometimes he scores goals but if he doesn't he offers nothing else to the team.

Enough about England though - wasn't the Portugal/Holland game the most bizarre you've ever seen? If it had gone to extra time I'm sure the game would have been abandoned eventually as I could see one or other of the sides having another couple of players sent off! That's what happens when the referee obeys the letter of the law (as ordered by FIFA) and the players act like complete idiots throughout the game.

Most amusingly, Figo will probably get away with his headbutt because the referee booked him at the time and there is a kind of 'double jeopardy' rule which states players cannot be punished twice for an incident. Quite how the referee felt able to give a yellow card for an offence which neither he nor the other officials saw, I'll never know. :?:

The missing players for Portugal ought to make us favourites for that game but unfortunately, I fully expect another limp Svengland Quarter-final defeat. The sooner he's gone the better. Unfortunately, our manager in waiting, Steve McClaren, is cut from the same cloth as Sven but without the interesting private life. ;)

Sven would need to go back to 2 up front for that, to play a striker with Rooney. I thought Rooney did really nicely in the 2nd half, never stopped running and was happy to track back and win balls before going forward again. We looked solid in the 2nd half, happy with that performance.

But in general I agree. There's another gear or two to be found, and we can ill afford another game of missed upshifts.

I'd agree about Rooney. And if Gerrard and Lampard turned up the offensive aggression dial a notch or two I could be happy without bringing Crouch in right at the beginning. And Beck too, of course, on offensive flow aggression, tho enough has been written/bitched about that outside set pieces.

I know I'm not the futbol expert that many here are, but I don't think I can say enough about the non-sexy job Ashley Cole is doing in general, not just the block today.

I hope C.Ronaldo will be ok for the next game, he took a nasty gorge from the stupid dutch player. Portugal will miss Deco as well but I think they should still win vs England.

Also, Deco's sending off was crap. He picked up the ball and the Dutch guy was very offensive and anyone would've turned as he did. He then straight away dropped the ball yet the ref saw fit to give him a yellow. What crap. The ref should be sent home for being a tit. Portugal other sending off was deserved though. The players know that they shouldn't use their hands to stop a ball. Netherlands first sending was deserved. He did bring his arm up against Figo's face.

Also, why was the portuguese goalie booked? I couldn't see anything wrong and they never showed a replay?

The World Cup winners is still gonna come from the match between Brazil/Spain. I think whoever wins that game will win the Cup. Germany are strong though and I expect to see them in the finals.

Delay of game, the goalie wanted to make sure a downed portuguese player was ok, and the ref carded him for waiting. The ref sucked.

Scratch my earlier post... the most important thing for England is that they may will face Portugal minus Deco and Costinho, and possibly minus Ronaldo and Figo, if FIFA fancy suspending him for the head-but.

But England does not inspire much on current form.

Deco deserved the second yellow for trying to waste time by running away with the ball . Where I would have differed with the ref is that I would also book the Dutch player that threw Deco to the ground .

Despite being an Argentina supporter , I think Germany look like the most dangerous team now .

Well, we are going to see next Friday who is the better team :p

Would like to see England with a decent coach. Plenty of talent. Svens tactics seem to be throw them in pot and stir! Muddled mess.
I would love to see Gus Hdink(sp?) coaching England after hes finished with Aussie.

So would I! Unfortunately we're going to be stuck with Steve McClaren, and his proven track-record of mediocrity.

Isn't Guus Hiddink off to coach Russia next?

I think Sven gets a rough ride and much of it is undeserved. Basically his problem stems from the fact that Gerrard and Lampard play in the same position but he's unable to drop either due to the media. Therefore he has to find some way of playing them together that works which has so far eluded him.

Sven can't win. He takes flak for whatever decision he makes. Taking only four strikers is reasonable when you consider that they would be playing in front of two midfielders that scored more than 40 goals in the Premiership last season. But the media doesn't like nuanced arguments. Does anyone really believe that Jermaine Defoe, who can't get a game for Spurs, is the answer? Give me a break.

Stick with the 4-1-4-1 and let's deliver some revenge on Portugal for Euro 2004.

Very selective.

One striker, Owen, who was coming back from a major injury who has a history of injuries and poor form in the (relatively few) games he played before the WC.
Another striker, Rooney, who started the WC injured and at the time (the squad was selected) it was a complete unknown whether he'd be fit.
Another striker, Walcott, who hasn't played a single minute of Premiership football, and doesn't look like playing a single minute of WC football.
And Crouch, who certainly has his critics.

Doesn't sound that reasonable to me, especially when the extra position was used to accommodate Jermaine Jenas.

i couldnt agree more........... i had a cathartic moment, "hang on,, the alternative was defoe or bent?,,, bring on walcott".......
i really feel people should remember the reason we lost in 2002 at the first knockout was because we didnt win the group.. sven has the best winning %age of any england coach , and by *far* the best record in qualifying and competing in competitions..

and if you really want england horror stories, watch the matches from 1990 or 94 ( ooops) or maybe 98?

i've already seen posts like "even if sven wins,, it's inspite of him , not coz of him"... it beggers belief... ecuador went from 'team that might cause upset, they scored loads in group stages' to ' rubbish team , we should have hammered em'.......

we should learn to enjoy winning, i know it's difficult for england, but lets try.

Not going to happen. The British media always seem to be half hyping the team up to be able to walk on water and half waiting to gloat/scold them for drowning if they'd dare try.

Well, Ashley Cole doesn't need to do a sexy job. Leave that up to his fiancee.

I've not really been that much of a critic of Sven in the past but it's certainly time for him to go. Sven never seems to know what formation to choose (England have played a different formation in every game so far) and you never get the stability you need doing this. Germany, for example have kept their settled team and formation and have gone from strength to strength. Yesterday, on the other hand, England won in spite of Sven's latest formation, not because of it. We've got some great players but we're still not playing well and unfortunately I can't see it all coming together in time for success in this World Cup. If we reach the Semi-finals it should be considered a good showing with so many players recovering from injury or out of form.

Somehow the English this WC remind me of the Germans of 2002. Lots of problems in teamplay, slow passing, too little movement on the pitch, next to no attractiveness and excitement in the way they play, yet somehow always able to score the decisive goal while keeping the opponent out of the own box through tough defending, a fair share of luck and an awesome goalie (that remains to be seen in case of England, the defence is more stable though, so they might not need it). Germany managed to get to the finals with this kind of performance, so England with its better individual players could go quite far this WC too...

Yep, the contract has apparently already been signed. But maybe he'll coach three teams, he's a workaholic :p
