Windows 10 [2014 - 2017]

The upgrade worked on most of my hardware at home, but continually bombs on second boot (the first "real" boot into Windows) because of the Intel AHCI storage driver on my x79 gaming rig. As far as I can tell, it looks like Win10 downloaded the normal Intel RST package, however my x79 specifically requires the Intel RSTe (enterprise) version.

I can't seem to figure out how to get over the hump. I may just kick the system into IDE mode, pull the upgrade, and then rebuild the whole stupid rig from the raw media after I'm able to gank my license key. Sigh. :(

anybody have broken optical DTS and Dolby 5.1 support?

I googled and windows 10 team have acknowledged the problem since PREVIEW and said they have the fix, just waiting to package it into windows update. but still no fix seen on windows update.

what the heck Microsoft... did the engineers working on that fix got into summer vacation and forgot it?

Anyone else who upgraded from a previous windows version still having a Windows.old folder in the root of your system partition even after disk cleaning out their previous installation files (it was almost 20GB on disk, blah!), with at least one copy of ASMSW.dll in it (I have two in mine, for some stupid incomprehensible bloated windowsish reason, although it's probably just one file in reality appearing in two folders, again for incomprehensible bloat reason).

Tried taking ownership from TrustedInstaller to delete and get rid of it, but it's being used by WUDFHost.exe so that idea went to shit real quick. :p

It SO irritates me to have this one, lone vestigal file still remaining in the Windows.old folder. Oh well, I intend to nuke this install anyway some day when I get around to buying a nice USB3 flashdrive, so I can install from scratch in style!

My Windows.old is 33Gb, but I'm actually considering downgrading.

I like the OS so far. I think my main complaint is Edge on my tablet is not quite as easy to use as IE11 Win8 because they dropped the swipe navigation which I thought was the best tablet web browsing feature in existence.

I haven't kept an upgade install though. Fresh install for 3 machines now.

Windows.old remains on HDD for 30 days, giving option to the user to revert to the old OS if he wants.

Is it just Edge, or maybe all "metro" apps, but when I maximize the window vertically, the setting isn't saved or even respected in the least sense of the world, meaning the window resets to its original, smaller size after say, double-clicking the title bar to maximize it, or even just the monitor coming out of power save... (!)

Fricken annoying!

I've had Windows 10 for a couple of days now with just two issues:
  • No proper audio drivers means I don't get to use audio enhancements. I have to route system audio through a couple of foobar plug-ins to get stereo source material (like youtube videos) to play through the subwoofer in my 5.1 system. Via support told me they're waiting on approval for their new driver, so hopefully that's fixed soon.
  • Occasional black screens for anything between an instant and a couple of seconds. Presumably the nVidia driver is at fault here though I did just read in another thread that EVGA precision was causing crashes so I've uninstalled that and we'll see what happens.
I don't mind the look of it. Could use more cohesion, but I sort of don't care how the thing looks as long as I know where stuff is. Disabled cortana and got rid of most of the tiles crap pretty much straight away. I decided I like the search bar though, so that's staying.

All in all I like it. Seems a bit faster than before. Considering how I use it though, I could've quite happily stayed on Windows 7 for a while longer. I don't need any of the new features yet (roll on DX12 content).

Did you try running Disk Cleanup using "run as administrator"? That gives you the option of cleaning out additional files. I got rid of my .old file though I don't recall if I did that manually, or through disk cleanup.

Yeah I agree it seems ok but not exactly better across the board. It's quite usable. I think it's a lot better than Win8 without Classic Shell.

Though to be honest I don't know if I really like it better for tablets than 8.1. I don't really need all the stuff they've done with the UI there.

From what I can tell from the description next to that setting, it also means you don't get use of the P2P bandwidth either, so your own updates could be slower.

I've been running 10 for a few days now, upgraded from 8.1 and no issues other than when I foolishly ran the Amd driver cleaner too, hosing all my USB ports. Had to do the refresh your pc thing.
I am running the windows 8 driver for my focusrite usb interface, the windows 10 version has a bug where you get pops/clicks every once a while, luckily the win8 driver works just fine.

My HP has Beats audio, the systray app works but when I try to use the graphic eq or the beats audio enhancement it doesn't do anything. I'm hoping for updated drivers too, I only have stereo speakers to worry about though.

Thats the only problem I seem to have found since the upgrade, reinstalled bitdefender and no problems this time.

Yes. Otherwise, disk cleaner won't touch the windows.old or the $windows.~bt folders at all. However, it apparently couldn't touch this particular file since it was in use for whatever reason. ...WHY windows itself is running stuff out of the windows.old folder if it's targeted by termination by the OS in 30 days as stated here in this thread anyway is a complete mystery, but I assume it is because Microsoft.

How to disable using your PC's bandwidth to send Microsoft's Win 10 updates to other computers.
You get the choice to do this during initial setup if you don't click the express option. Who here does that anyway? :) Anyway, why is this really a problem, do we have any data yet on how much of your connection is used for seeding updates?

I have plenty bandwidth, so I left the settings alone. It's in my own self-interest that other people patch their computers as quickly as possible, hehe...

I only have 1mbps max upload, so I really don't want my PC upload bandwidth being used in background without my knowledge. When using torrent, at least I can close the client.

It only applies to computers on the same private network I think, rather than out to the Internet at large.
