The Framerate Analysis Thread part 2

The final game runs mostly above 40 FPS.
That's still far closer to 30 than 60
actually its not, FPS is non linear
as I mentioned in another thread from our testing 40fps should be minimum FPS not 30fps for all non slow gameplay games, perhaps the makers of the game conducted similar tests?

Input shouldn't be coupled to refresh. Games can read and update at 60+ fps with much lower framerates. In fact games where slowdown occurs are few and far between these days, with the game turning into a slideshow at worst, but the game not slowing down as a result.

Well I donno,I do find difference in aiming speed when the FPS is 30 compared to the movement found in 40FPS, its a bit more smoother. And doesnt V-locking the frames brings in input lag too ?

Aiming is easier and smoother because you can see what's happening in response to your input. That's different from lag though.

the lower the FPS the less responsive the game is, the player can only react on what they see.
heres a related article.

We've done some testing but I'ld love to see some organization (perhaps an idea for someones thesis?) conduct a through study with 100s of ppl.
Our conclusion was 30fps is not good enuf, 40fps is. The only reason we have 30fps is because of TVs refresh rates

Its odd to see when the PS3 ver. of a game has Tearing than the 360 version.
I thought V-sync atleast isnt a problem on PS3.

What is even stranger is that I'm very sensitive to tearing and have still to witness some on Dirt 2 PS3 demo. is it located on the top of the screen like in WipeOut HD for example ?

DiRT2 DEMO
360 http://zoome.jp/ps360/diary/350/
PS3 http://zoome.jp/ps360/diary/351/

360 AVG(29.942) Tearing( 1.729%) Low(29.0)
PS3 AVG(29.833) Tearing(20.261) Low(28.0)

DiRT DEMO
360 AVG(29.059) Tearing(30.984%) Low(25.5)
PS3 AVG(28.548) Tearing(35.166%) Low(25.0)

That's a pretty nice improvement, good work. I think its fair to say that at least the PS3 version of Dirt 1's framerate was just not acceptable for a racing game, a genre where any dropped frame is usually noticable if your base framerate is only 30fps. On the PC side I noticed performance from Dirt to GRID saw a very real improvement, so it seems clear there engine has come a long way since its initial iteration.

Also, its worth noting that on the PC side their engine hugely favours ATI hardware (with a 4850 capable of beating out a GTX 280!) so they've done very well to get such excellent performance out of RSX here, I'm sure they're offloading a lot of its workload to them SPUs.

Yeah, the Gears of War deal had some interesting benefits for Microsoft.
