I can't understand why microsoft shows an old build of the engine
this is a mystery
Bungie only had two days to put together the E3 trailer, so they had to gather up all all the saved films they had and knit them together. I suppose it's conceivable they used some old footage in the process.

However, I wouldn't assume that most of the media was from an old build just because of a few good looking magazine screenshots.

How in the world could they only have 2 days? They knew E3 was coming up for months.

"I mean, I think we can say honestly that up until two days before the keynote we weren't even going to be a part of the keynote. So a lot of people here did step up and bust ass to produce that trailer, and everybody in this room helped play some games, get some saved films, to provide that down to the video crew."

So then the question is...what the hell happened?

MS changed their keynote at the very last minute?

Magazine shots are all hi-res supersampled pics with super hi-res textures not possible in the actual game unless they're from the photo mode, I mean watch the E3 720p trailer that looks like 600p with AA upscaled to blurry 720p as seen in the MP beta.

Surely you don't actually believe the game is going to look like this, do you?:

And besides, it's the lighting that is most impressive in the new scans, not textures which are hard to make out with the quality of the scans.

Maybe he has a SDTV and that is what he expects for his experience (on his TV)? ;)

QFT, really impressive that puts the lighting in many other games to shame.

Right now the only direct source is that fresh trailer "built in 2 days", it's not a matter of believing or not, it's just what it is. OTOH I don't believe the game is going to look like this.

yep absolutely gorgeous

perhaps enhanced AA? but otherwise some of the most beautiful lighting and jungle foliage ever seen in a game to date.

can't wait to see it in motion on my HDTV.

oh ...and if the water and sound in the MP beta are any indication, it will outshine many other games in those areas as well.

Maybe it's the sampling pattern, but the second image looks like 2x.

yea, I don't trust AA/jaggies in any screenie whether they look good or bad regardless of the game.

I will withhold judgment of all levels of aliasing until I see it in motion on my HDTV as any reasonable person should this gen. ;)

What that is is obviously a poorly encoded video, that's about it. It's fairly worthless for judging quality of the gfx.

I'm not sure why you think the game is going to look so much different from the press shots. Ya, they're high res, with some extra AA, but they are stil lgonna look pretty close to that good on the TV screen anyways.

R&C is the same way, super hi res screens, but you can still tell is a gorgeous game regardless.

We need Frankie or Luke to take a zoomed-in video of a 720p display while the game is running. :p

I really have little interest in single player games these days but this has me very excited about SP.

"Halo 3" is packed with detail. Audio lead Jay Weinland proudly notes that as of the morning of the journalists' visit, it included almost 54,000 pieces of audio: 1,000 pieces of music, 13,000 sound effects and 39,368 pieces of dialogue....

But the new technology has allowed Bungie to fill its sandbox to the brim. There are new weapons - try taking out a vehicle with the Spartan laser - and vehicles galore - the Prowler, Chopper, Hornet and Elephant add to the "Halo" universe.
And there are plenty of other toys: trip mines, bubble shields, grav-lifts.
"All equipment in multiplayer shows up in single-player and the AI will use it on you,"...
Not to mention the main reason I bought a Next Gen console... eye candy.

the MP game is so deep and allows so much customization and is so feature packed with integration into the Friends lists and such that I can see it being a game that will endure the entire generation leading the online play on consoles.

Prove the shots are using super hi-res textures not possible in the actual game, and show me where it was confirmed that the photo mode most people will use in the final game does anything besides render the image at higher resolutions/with extra AA. If even that.

Least you could do if you're going to keep tossing these comments around. And 600p? Yeah, here we go again...

I want to see the second trailer (of 3 supposed to be shown this summer). Bungie releasing media in that poor quantities is a real torment for me.

Well, obviously, but I doubt we'll ever know exactly what happened. Doesn't make that much difference IMO as the trailer was decent, and Bungie didn't have time to do a proper 'made for E3' SP feature.

And the screenshots were taken during normal gameplay (during the podcasts they joke about Luke Smith messing up the screenshots!). No 'photo mode' has been announced, and the save games they use to take screenshots run at 720p, of course.

It's funny I don't even read Halo 3 news/hype/critiques anymore. I just know that Halo 3 will be brilliant and plan on buying it completely on faith. Bungie hasn't let us down yet. :)
