Sony's NeoGeo Pocket's (PSP2/Vita) business/non technical ramifications talk

My friend bought a PSP early on, and has used it faithfully as a portable media player. Well, he's just ordered himself and ASUS EeePad Transformer after seeing a friends, and that'll be his device of choice now. With direct HDMI out it's ideal for portable media both in a small device and for output on a TV. NGP hasn't even go that, and I expect my mate to be very representative. I don't think the added gaming features are going to be worth enough to most of PSP's owners.

Jeff Rubenstein from the blog confirmed that there is no video out again:

1. No video out
2. This is true Uncharted. The level I played was more focused on exploration. I actually enjoyed the touch controls more than expected. Like many of you, I was glad to hear they were optional, but then I found myself using them.
3. We haven’t announced NGP’s final name, but it won’t be “NGP.”

Some game site mistakenly claimed that the unit has a HDMI video out today. :(

I wonder why they didn't include one too.

They had TV out in the newer PSPs... perhaps it made no difference to PSP sales. Or may be they want the users to pay for a dock/base station. Or perhaps they want to go RemotePlay.

I currently chalk it up to "wait and see".

I spoke with the Gamestop manager near my office over lunch. She came back today from a Sony training session. Told me there are still quite a few things unannounced for "NGP". Mentioned a little about Sony's "Near" app.

I wouldn't write it off now. It's one of those "natural next steps" for iOS and Android devices.

Eurogamer hand on is up!
I've been kind enough to post the link before reading it myself
OMG after seeing those captures and Uncharted, along with Wipeout 2048, which is the equivalent of F-Zero, a game that I really love, it only bothers me the battery's life expectancy of the NGP -which in the case of not lasting enough can be a major impediment taking into account my life style-, and of course, the price, but that's a different matter.

Apparently the Xperia Play 2 is getting HDMI out. So there is some hope for NGP yet, but they may just want to save on a scaler chip initially?

Sony could go with some docking bay or wireless solution, although wireless would be expensive and complicated versus an HDMI port. Hopefully they'll announce as much at E3. And hopefully this time, their announced peripherals will be out with the portable, instead of years later (PSP GPS took ages, PSP Camera took longer, PSP tilt sensor never appeared!).

Sony has had location free TV technology for sometime now. How do we know NGP won't use some derivative technology to get the video onto your TV?
Because my TV doesn't have that tech. :p

They could with a 'dongle' - a wfii box to stream wireless TV. But as I say, that's jolly expensive and complicated where an HDMI cable wouldn't be. Makes far more sense to have a docking bay with an HDMI port, and maybe PS3 AV port that can connect to composite and component with existing cables.

I agree that an AV port would be cheaper way to go but haven't they already said they aren't going to offer one?

TVs don't have WiFi....so to stream something to a TV you'd need a WiFi device attached to the TV. SONY could sell a WiFi kit for your TV but I honestly don't see them going through the trouble. I think a better solution would be a docking station with HDMI out and add the option of using a wireless controller for the NGP.

I could have sworn that the new 60" Bravia LED/LCD that was purchased for work advertised Wi-Fi on the packaging.

I will check on monday--it makes sense since a lot of TVs are offering apps as part of the TVs now.

Wifi and internet are becoming fairly common features with today's tvs...

That's not the point, the point is HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of existing TVs don't have WiFi. I'm sure there is some TV somewhere that has a built-in kitchen sink too...who cares? Doesn't mean I want a portable gaming device to be able to shoot dishwashing soap to a TV.

Unfortunately nobody is going to go out and buy a new TV with WiFi just so they could wirelessly stream NGP video....

I think a normal person with an existing TV would rather use a cable or docking station and I'm sure MILLIONS of people think the same.

They've said there's none in the NGP itself, but that doesn't preclude peripherals.

I thought I had read somewhere that Sony said they were not going to offer an AV out peripheral. I've been looking but can't find the article so maybe they will.

Edit:

if they do it would be a good way to generate additional $$$
