Resistance: Fall of Man gameplay impressions

This is off screen, but it is decent quality, mostly in focus, and decent resolution (960x540). Take a look:

http://www.playsyde.com/news_2977_en.html

A lot of good stuff going on there. Probably on uber easy, so I wont say anything about the gameplay other than the level being shown, at that difficulty level, requires no skill and no strategy at all. But my experience is: E3 and game demos frequently are very easy because the gamer has 10 minutes to get an impression of the game, and dieing is no fun. Gameplay will be vital to differentiate this title from the hoard of FPS. It looks great, moves well, is an interesting theme. Looking forward to reviews in the future and hearing more about what makes it different and not run-and-gun.

EDIT: Some nice 720p trailer/gameplay here: http://www.us.playstation.com/Content/OGS/GMID-018/Site/

Guys on walls, tall skinny dude assaulting a friendly troop, kitch scene. Very grey game. Reminds me of black in many ways. Nice particles, run and gun it seems from the video.

1up talked a little about their hands on in their latest podcast:

'resistence actually works pretty well for a couple of minutes, although, it is Half Life as far as I can tell. Right down to the little scuttly creatures, I mean it's got some nice physics and cool GFX, but it's very half life 2.'

Damn, I wish this game was on x360, or even better, pc. I really don't want to drop 500 to play this, and my pc would handle this fine @ 1680*1050 ( my preferred res).

Wow that's a great compliment. Don't know if this game will get the credit HL got though. Only time will tell.

HL2 was a GREAT game. But there is something to be said about being the trend setter in 2004 and do a mimick in 2006. Alas that would be selling Resistance short. I don't see all the voice/body acting in Resistance (which has now been superceeded by that funky chick game), but it has waaay better graphics, if not heavy on the grey.

10 minutes on the floor is not really enough to say much. It is very hard to judge any game in such a short time, especially a FPS. A game like HS is hard because of story and game length and variety, but you can instantly get a feel for the animation and game controls (which rock) and general feel. A FPS is hard because they tend to have 10-20 weapons, 2 or 3 different settings, and a dozen enemy types. Any FPS can have a great (or bad) sequence. The question is how does the experience feel after 1 hour of playing?

And dare I say for FPS, since SP can be so short, how is the MP? Longevity and Value in a FPS are frequently attached to the SP, and a very good SP that is short with poor MP is a downer. But none of this can be weighed yet.

The game has a LOT going for it. Has potential. But this is a TOUGH genre to crack. As a FPS fan I can tell you we are pretty picky. And that could be the difference. FPS fans have played hundreds of titles, where the PS-PS2 have not had a ton of FPS. The markets may be different, and thus the standards.

Interestingly the next year will see a slew of these titles: BiA3, MoH:A, Halo 3, Prey, Gears of War (basically a FPS like GRAW, just over the shoulder), UT2007, etc. It is hard to differentiate yourself, especially a new franchise.

Yes, this genre since wolfenstein.

Tsk Tsk. That is like saying the same about every fighting game since Street Fighter 2 or every racing game since Outrun.

Like most established genres, FPS are more in a stage of evolution than revolution; and FPS has mainly differentiated themselves through new ways of doing things and sub-genres (tactical, online, twitch, WWII, sci-fi, etc).

The point I think Scoob was making was that because of the wide array of titles and general high quality titles need to do SOMETHING to differntiate themselves. Something good that people are demanding/like. That is hard to put a finger on at times. Some games go by graphics and experience like scaring you (D3), others take elements from other genres (Deus Ex), others take new avenues technologically (Red Faction), others AI, Physics, etc and some, like HL2, seem to take a lot of different ideas, refine them, and go with a story telling approach.

So far I have not seen anything that sticks out in Resistance. Looks nice and runs smooth and has an interesting, if cliché theme. The theme could be a sticking point because others already "claimed" the corner on that. Everything else after seems "recycled" unless blown out of the water.

If Insomniac is going for a HL2 style game (story, AI, physics, etc) we will need to wait for reviews. Even HL2 had to wait for reviews to separate hype from crap. A lot of FPS die at the review stage because they just don't deliver.

My rough first opinion makes me think this is more like COD2 than HL2, and it looks like a good step up in graphics from CoD2. Has potential.

that was my comparison also

It will need to be on its toes however to meet the incredible, perfect timing and intensity that CoD2 single player brings.

@ Acert93

Oke, so the intention behind my message didn't came though..It was waaaay to lighthearted to valid a whole analysis page on the "subject" like you did.

Man, that was like a post-it note for Acert ;)

WOW!

I just re-watched the trailer for this (because.. I watched most trailers at work with no sound.. so, watching them again.. hehe)

And.. UHh.. I thought the game looked good and fun the first time (with no sound) still think it looks good and fun with sound.. I agree that it's nothing revolutionary.. But..

HOLY CRAP, PEOPLE!

There's a part in the trailer, right after it cuts away from the opening outdoor action to the inside action where the player spends about an entire clip BLASTING away at the LIGHT fixture over head.

And the light DOESN'T GO OUT.

Sorry, but that's just retarded. They spend about 30 seconds or so demonstrating how you can 'shoot out windows' WOO HOO! YIPPIE! GREAT! How wonderfully 'next gen' that you can shoot out windows!

But you can't shoot out LIGHTS?

Ugh. Horribly disappointed when I noticed that.

Haha I noticed that as well. They did that to demonstrate how the light source casted from it moved in the room but at the same time they "demonstrated" that the light cant go out when you shoot it. Ironic isnt it?

I would like to see that the light source can be moved as well. Where can I find this trailer (I'm guessing its not in the official one?)

and if it can move ...it can be shut off.

Exactly what I was thinking when I read the moving light part...which is why I wanted to see it myself but haven't a clue which one he's talking about :???:

The problem I have with this type of game is lack of diversity and too much brainlessness. I'm not an FPS-guy at all, tons of these games are out now, and new type of sci-fi guns just won't be enough to beat the strong competition this genre has.

The zillion mutant aliens that come up, all looking like clones (about time they integrate some random charachter-creator in those gameengines by adjusting height, width, and looks slightly for every enemy) , and they're all running right into the gunshots of their enemies. r

I prefer the smart aliens (actually I'm pretty tired of aliens, zombie's, mutants and monsters), constantly hiding behind the objects in stead of running into the open, shooting for a sec and hiding, crawling sneaky into the ground peaking around the objects. Jumping over fences and dive behind them if they are under fire. That kind of stuff.

Just human like A.I. in terms of competition. It's like you're playing zombie's here, that can only run and shoot, and some of them are scripted behind objects, but they still don't get it when they are about to be killed because of massive firepower aiming at them. They need brains, sintead of vicious teeth.

Explosions en physics look very cool, and if they can put in lot's of crazy effects the trailer ended with (I mean, what was it that came though that wall so massively and powerfull), it still can be an interesting game, but they need a lot more innovation than this game so far showed. Just take the best of every succesfull FPS, integrate it, and do it next-gen PS3 style. If that can't be done, don't bother making another game in this crowded genre, and start focussing on cool Ratchet-platformers again for PS3.

Btw, this is a general complaint for almost every FPS game on PC and 360 so far, the clicheness is destroying this genre, can't understand why such a talented dev of a great platform franchise wants to enter a genre everybody already doing. Give me more Indigo Prophecy's/Fahrenheits/Heavy Rains/Ico's and less FPS'ers plz.

Thats the ironic part. The light is hanging from the ceiling, the player shoots at it, and it swings. The light source moves in the room. Developers put the effort on this but the easy thing that you shoot a light and is shut off is not there.

Btw if I remember well that video was from IGN.
