Are not most FPS generic to a degree? There are so many games in the genre, it really comes down to execution and implimenting innovative technologies in a way that evolves the gameplay without detracting from the core. The best example in the last couple years of such is HL2.
I was not a fan of CoD2, but it sold well for obvious reasons. It is true that this is a year later where gameplay and graphics are a notch higher--but this looks to be a notch prettier than CoD2. I don't know about the gameplay (I have not played it), but it is done by a quality dev so it should be at least decent. FPS are a hard cookie to crack though. Yet CoD2 with a Halo re-charge meter (arg!) can have like an 85% attach rate at launch, then there is some wiggle room for taste.
It looks solid enough from what I have seen. FPS are hard to judge as any FPS can look good for 10 minutes. You really need to sit down and play it. I can understand people getting excited, but I also understand the hesitancy.
Like most FPS this is a wait and see. Very few FPS makers are on a "get excited" list from me. Valve and Bungie being the two that come to mind for overall game; CryTek, Epic, and id for graphics (but always questioning gameplay). Gearbox is getting close to be a preferred dev with BiA. And that is about it. Everyone else has to wait for a review or LONG hands on previews to get me excited.
Anyhow, I am not sure how someone could have been excited about Gears of War based on it branching out some (3rd person, cover, SP) and Epics hit and miss record without FIRST seeing a bit of strong gameplay. It seems Gears, as generic as it is in some ways, has turned out great.
Resistance may do the same. Or not.
btw. the halo recharge meter was a stroke of genious. you're either dead or your not, simple. And youget a little wiggle room. Much better than looking around for white boxes with supposed bullet wound healing band-aids inside!!
I think it has 32 player online as well.
