Rage (id Software)

He described how they overcame issues for porting to 360 and PS3.

In the end, they use (a fast section of) HDD to stream assets. 360 has to go for full install (to provide better experience than streaming from DVD). PS3 uses partial install + Blu-ray for similar goal.

PS3 splits the memory in 2 and OS took up more space, forcing them to do extra work in asset management and streaming. He commented that 8kx8k textures may fit on 360's unified memory, but they'd still need to do extra work to fit other subsystems in. In the end, both consoles use half res compared to PC.

When is this game coming out ?

pretty sure he said 360 supports 8k x 8k, and ps3 doesn't even though they had to go with 4k x 4k on both anyway. He said BR is slow, and split memory pool was a minor issue wih the larger OS having an impact on caching. I dont thini he said anything that really slammed sony or ps3 in any way.

Mwehhh. He actually said that he's vary to say anything about these issues because they're always posted on the internet later, taken completely out of context. And suprise, exactly that has happened.

By the way I was more curious about the raw power who have extrapolate to ps3 (I don't know if Carmak has said exactly or it's just a PR proclaim) to reach the same level of quality of 360 gpu.

I thought the most interesting part of his talk was about using code analysis tools like Microsoft's Analyze which is included in the dev kits. I always find it funny that people complain about Carmack's ego when he seems very eager to talk about the flaws in his tech, missed opportunities and his normal human failures as a programmer.

Who ever said that?:devilish:

dunno, but maybe the game benefits from huge Z fillrate as with doom 3.
oops, maybe I don't quite understand your question, parse the grammar doesn't not to

Yeah, this is how it came across. According to the vg247 keynote liveblog it sounded like he tore up blu ray, but his comments were actually short and quite mild.

He said something about Ps3 not supporting 8kX8k while 360 did, but a lot of that discussion went over my head, in the end if I understood correctly he tried to say the repercussions of any Ps3 shortcomings about the 8kx8k textures ended up being not a big deal when all was said and done.

He said the absolute best way to play the game on console will be the "21-22GB" full 360 install, which I guess was mandated to be all or nothing no partial allowed. But that sounds nice for if you have the space and I do, the best way to play as far as texture pop in.

And he briefly touched on Blu Ray having worse read latency than DVD in passing.

And he spoke about the PS3's split RAM architecture, but again seemed to say that basically ended up not being much of a problem in the end. And of course the larger Sony OS comments. I wonder how much larger Sony's OS is currently? Cant be more than 20-30MB, what was the latest figure on B3D?

Anyways in the keynote he talked about Rage having a "painterly" look, due to megatexture, a few times, and I have to agree, it does look different from most anything else out there and I've come around to kind of liking the look.

I just posted this in the PC thread of RAge but thought thatit would be intersting to post it here too:

Here's something I just noticed... There'sa pretty big difference between yesterday's trailer and the previous video:

Gameplay vid:

Uprising tailer:

Sure there'smore video compression on the first one but the texture quality is deffinitely not the same (and brighness is totally diffrent). Even the dude's sunglasses are different.

that looks like pathological compression on top of brightness/gamma washing out details, and the lighting looks tweaked on second shot.

I want to believe those are the same assets.
hum yay, the goggles give it away, microphone is different too. or not. I'm having a hard time.

my bet is only the character is different, and higher res.

If the top pic is the console version then I will seriously rethink about buying it on consoles. Neither pics look pretty though.

I don't think it depends only of that, sound like quite bizarre imho.

Texture pop-in in the Making off trailer released a few weeks ago (look at the weapon's texture) also note that the sunglasse are the same as the ones in the Uprising trailer screenshot I posted above:

Latest Uprising Trailer (back to the other sunglasses):
