Rage (id Software)

Another interesting one

If all 3 are installed and only the first 1 needs to be in the machine to eliminate disc swapping that would be nice (but I think we've had this discussion before and unclear if Microsoft allows this). I have I think 57GB left on my 120GB 360 so it could fit.

Forza 3 did this 2nd disk acted like dlc pack.
So maybe the waste lands on disk 2 and 3 can act like dlc and to play from hdd disk1 exe is needed.

From the sound of it install is not mandatory with X360. It might be for PS3 version.

I dont think there's ever been a game with mandatory install on 360 so, no. Plus Carmack already outlined the speed of the options with X360>from DVD the slowest.

There have been, at least I've seen mentions about some football/rugby games being mentioned that needed it. Unfortunately I can't recall any names. Also, wasn't it so that GTA4 crashed pretty reliably when you took a fast enough vehicle and drove faster than the box could stream in new data?

Likewise, it would be interesting to know how many of the lowest end PS3 model (the 20GB unit) are still out there, and what these people do for required mandatory installs across more than a handful of games.

There is always the option to replace it with a bigger HDD.

Thereweren't many sold in the first place. The model was quickly discontinued. Plus, you could just wipe a previous install and move on. That is an option on HDD units.

I doubt there are that many 20GB ps3 owners, and even if there are, I bet most of them upgraded the HDD like I did as soon as I bought mine (I have a 120GB slim now).

Can you guys put a SSD in your Xbox or PS3? Swap out that notebook HDD. That ought to bring some benefits. ;)

I believe you can put a ssd in a ps3 on the 360 you can't there are like 6 different drivers of 360 disk in the loop with the biggest being 250gig at 10k rpm if im not mistaken.

Had a old 250gig laptop hdd and there was a driver for it didn't took long for me to make it 360 compatible.

Still don't understand why MS won't allow people to install multi-disc games and just play from disc 1. It would be a simple solution to their multi-disc problem, but they won't allow it for some reason.

Not a total solution (many with 4GB/Arcade/Core/20GB/60GB probably still dont have enough space to comfortably install multiple discs, and there's probably a ton of people out there who have no idea what installing is, it's very hidden on the dashboard if you're not tech savvy you'd never know of it), but yeah it would help a lot.

The updated Dasboard makes it really easy to install. When you goto the disc menu it shows you two options "play" or "install".

You need to press 'Y" before the menu come up....
for "people that know tech" its easy to see (the info on bottom) and easy to do. But for people that only know "insert game, play". Its become kind of hard.

my friends dont know that Y can be pressed there to open new menu. i even need to demo it for him to understand it.
maybe if the "Info" on bottom is more noticable, more people will notice. Maybe by making it flicker, or glow purple every 2 sec...

or just make the ingame menu have install opt like ps3 games

No problem for not install solution, it's run like now. Only for install look presence of disk install and need disk one for launch.

I didn't mean for it to be a total solution, and of course it would only be optional since no one would make it a requirement, closing off the millions of 4GB/arcade/core owners. As someone who has the HDD space, I would like the option and can't see any logical reason why MS would prevent this.

Also, anyone that can't figure out how to install games is likely not to notice or care about the benefits IMO.
