PS5 DualShock Revealed (DualSense)

Actually if you look under the PS logo/button there looks to be a mic mute button:

Oh shit I was wrong, they might actually have put a real linear actuator, with a full motor mechanism to control the tension and travel?

What does that do from a cost estimate perspective?

A bit more plastic (nylon for gears) plus a pair of micro-motor instead of a pair rumble motors, which is pretty much the same thing, one is turning a mass, the other is turning a nylon mechanism. Probably equivalent to putting a rumble on each trigger.

25 cents motors and 25 cents of more plastic, so $1?

Unless they go with really high quality coreless motors, that can be $1 each, but that would be overkill.

The is simultaneously cool but also add some concerns when it comes to reliability. Hopefully the parts are high quality.
Looking at the pictures, as long as the mechanism is nylon, I expect high reliability. The only thing that can go bad is the positional detection, but they seem to use a membrane contact, which is indestructible if kept clean. tiny pots are usually good too, as long as it's designed to avoid any force going into them.

Don't understand the difference about the haptic feedback versus the XB1 impulse triggers. Is this like a version 2?
Impulse triggers is vibration in the triggers. DS5 is reportedly adding resistance, so the trigger gets harder to pull to simulate heavier guns, or a bow getting stretched.

As for the mic, seems like a nice add. Just can't wait to hear that mic array in PS5 is a godsend but on XB1 having a Kinect with mic array in every box they're going to listen in on every conversation.
That's because Kinect was tied to Cortana and was listening to everything for voice controls.

If PS5 has voice control as standard, it too will be listening to everything, but as Google and Amazon have normalised that now, don't expect the same level of concern as Kinect faced.

Mic will add even more cost in materials & affect on battery life. One would hope that it could be disabled if you want.
There'll certainly be a setting.
All in all I think it looks better than previous PS controllers, but I still wouldn't use it due to the symmetric sticks. I never use my d-pad that much.
Do you not play first-person games with twin-stick controls? Symmetric sticks seems the better compromise given the most popular game types.

No. During launch period (first few years) Kinect processed all commands locally and did not use Cortana.

Cortana integration wasn't until 2H 2016.

Still disappointing to me that neither one of the next gen controllers added gyro..

The DS4 has it as did the DS3/Sixaxis, so the DS5 will have it.

On PS4 if you have the Camera has supported voice commands already too since near launch or so.

I don't know I might be stupid but I'm pretty sure there's a mute button under the ps button? It looks like a button.

Contractors working for Microsoft have listened to audio of Xbox users speaking in their homes in order to improve the console’s voice command features, Motherboard has learned. The audio was supposed to be captured following a voice command like “Xbox” or “Hey Cortana,” but contractors said that recordings were sometimes triggered and recorded by mistake.

The former contractor said they worked on Xbox audio data from 2014 to 2015, before Cortana was implemented into the console in 2016.

"The Xbox stuff was actually a bit of a welcome respite, honestly. It was frequently the same games. Same DLCs. Same types of commands," they added. "'Xbox give me all the games for free' or 'Xbox download [newest Minecraft skins pack]' or whatever," they added.

"Occasionally I heard ‘Xbox, tell Solas to heal,’ or something similar, which would be a command for Dragon Age: Inquisition,” the former contractor said, referring to hearing audio of in-game commands.

"As time went on, we got less apparently accidental stuff as the feature improved," the former contractor said.

But it still had issues, with contractors hearing audio of Xbox users who had mistakenly triggered the device.

"Most of the Xbox related stuff I can recall doing was obviously unintentional activations with people telling Cortana 'No' as they were obviously in the middle of a game and doing normal game chat," the current contractor said.

In response to Motherboard's reporting, Microsoft updated its privacy documents to more explicitly say that humans may listen to obtained recordings, but continues to have humans review captured audio. The company's privacy policy now reads "Our processing of personal data for these purposes includes both automated and manual (human) methods of processing."

Microsoft offers users a dedicated page where they can delete audio captured by their products.

"We stopped reviewing any voice content taken through Xbox for product improvement purposes a number of months ago, as we no longer felt it was necessary, and we have no plans to re-start those reviews," the spokesperson wrote.
- Article dated August 2019, so MS were receiving and processing audio clips up until the Spring of last year.

Yes. You can use motion controls to input text in the on-screen keyboard. Don't know of any games that use it. Oh, Dreams, obviously.

Surely everyone who has a Playstation 4 tried Playroom VR? [emoji28]

Probably not because it came with the camera. But it shows everything the controller can do, with and without the camera.

Oh there are many more games that support it. But certainly any PSVR game that works with the DS4 does! So that’s a lot right there.
