Predict: The Next Generation Console Tech

I am thinking most of the 3GB is dedicated towards third party apps that needs to be running concurrently with games, i.e. dvr, ticker overlays, realtime video recording etc. In that case I don't think we'll ever see the 3GB figure getting shrunk by more than 25% max.

I can say even you open 10 apps in same time you still don't need 2GB RAM,plus even Win8 use less RAM than Win7,how can MS go back to vista level OS in future
They're software company,not Nintendo

There will be no virtual memory on consoles.

Almost zero chance of system reservation shrinking in an xbox product.

I guess we're hot.

But your right. Microsoft carefully planned out their 32MB reservation for what they would use it for in the future, Sony by comparison was all over the place and they had to cut features for that.

I guess they are planning some pretty big stuff OS wise.

Going back to the last major leak/rumour about the Orbis. http://www.vg247.com/2012/11/01/ps4_details_playstation_4/

I'm wondering why dev-kits would have either 8GB or 16GB of ram. Would it be plausible to have two different sorts of ram in early dev-kits?

Perhaps the 16GB is ddr3 while the 8GB is faster ram, or more customised, with Sony wanting feedback from devs (especially first party) as to the preferable option?

Maybe 16GB just incase they're upgrading to 8GB in the final console?

No, it will be either 4 or 8, not 8 and 16. 4GB GDDR5 or 8GB DDR3 or 4.

There will be no virtual memory on consoles.

Virtual memory is the thing that gives each process a virtual address space, maybe starting at zero, which appears continuous and with no pages from other processes in the way. Processes are actually well isolated from each other, "sandboxed", probably, for security reasons.

If you specifically mean "no swapping", of course I can only agree with you. You're more likely to have a memory excedent, which would be used as disk cache.

With the conformation that Durango will only have 5GB of slow, low bandwidth main memory available for games is it safe to assume that there will be a large amount of ESRAM on the GPU die?

Wow this AndyH guy on gaf has been spot on with his posts through the past year.

...

I think I am adding him to the list of people who I trust, which so far only has sweetvar26 and bkilian.

Of the 8GB of memory 1GB "addressable" per frame. If this is in regards to bandwidth that would put this somewhere just below 30GB/s for 720p30 all the way above 120GB/s for 1080p60, with 1080p30 being just over 60GB/s. Sounds very much to me like a design that would require some embedded memory of some sort.

Anyways, AndyH with 8 cores @ 1.6GHz, 8GB of memory, and 7850 AMD class GPU. 2 Cores and 3GB dedicated to the OS. (Btw, this rumors sounds optimistic but also believable).

Someone should make a nice summary thread of all the major rumors and any confirmations we have seen. Some connect the dots.

Well we can already assume that durango will have EDRAM, Microsoft has benefited wildly from that this gen. Of course Sony went with something completely different for PS3 after PS2's run in with EDRAM, but in that case they were trying something completely new, this is still a relatively normal set up
