Predict: The Next Generation Console Tech

Chips start production now for a launch in November? doubt that.

I'll be interested if Charlie is actually right about anything and Durango is actually a big APU.

Love Charlie's bold predictions "Next Xbox will likely hit in 2013 (which everybody and their dog already knew). Unless it doesn't. Either way you heard it here first"

Am I reading this right and they are basically saying the final hardware is done and about to be in production?

If so, I don't understand how a delay of a few weeks would push the console out of a 2013 launch date. I thought prior consoles, such as the 360 for example, didn't have final hardware until later in the year.

Article is so poorly written I'm not even sure what he's saying.

Except it's coming in 2013, unless it doesn't.

Originally he claimed that the new xbox was coming in September. That's only in about 8-9 months, still seems early. I think they need to enter production around 6 months prior to launch.

If they had to create new masks and re-tapeout the final design, that's around 8-weeks or so.

Supposedly 8850 with 1GB of fast GDDR5 spends ~130W and has performance of ~3TF. But that is not confirmed.

We're talking about 100 to 130 Watts without the RAM I believe, are we not? A pretty reasonable part of the total power consumption of high end GPUs is from memory.

basically he is saying that final production of xboxnext chipsets already started. I dont believe this, it dosent make any business sense (stocking chipsets for 1 whole year) they wont start final production until at least 6 months before shipments to consumers so they could start producion with lower costs.

Reading the article again, it seems like he's just guessing. There's no mention of any source hinting at final production, instead they seem to be recalling a previous rumor they mentioned and assume development hasn't hit any major delays.

The wording is ambiguous in that article. Like, definitely maybe Xbox is being manufactured :)

If it´s a chip as big as rumored they better start final production as soon as possible because yields won´t be good enough to satisfy the demand.

I could think of some reasons why they want to stockpile certain parts. Maybe yields are bad and they feel they need to start early to make sure they have enough chips. Or maybe they want to make sure they have plenty of units available at launch.

If yields are bad they have no choice. If yield are good it's not likely they will get that much better a couple of months from now. The only additional costs you'll have is storage. Stockpiling retail boxes will be expensive but you won't need much space for just chips.

If we assume the first few million will sell no matter what, I imagine a big launch to rival other popular CE devices would be good PR. Not that I believe the rumour, but there is a case for starting production now of a difficult part, including acquiring experience and process refinement I suppose, some 8+ months prior to launch for a big entry

Using PC GPU power consumption figures to give a base line for consoles is not the best idea.

There's no real way of fully loading a PC GPU to same extent a console one will be.

In a console every part of the GPU from the shader units, tessellation engine and the ROPS with be <mod>taxed</mod> beyond beleif.

There's no way of doing that on PC, sure we have a few programs but they don't test every piece of logic in the GPU so the power consumption numbers are still not that accurate.

Charlie is just speculating. In summer he supposedly heard random date for hitting milestone of Durango consumer sillicon, and now that date has passed. Title of the article is also weird:

"XBox Next/720 silicon production day arrives
Exclusive: Consoles this year mean the chips went in"

 Zero proof, all speculation.
