Playstation 3: Hardware Info and Price

You know for these prices, you would think they could have bumped up the RAM.

Maybe we could have had 256 MB more if we didn't have the motion sensor thing.

Wow, that was a TERRIBLE press conference, I can afford $600 but there's no way I'm getting a PS3 at launch. Paying $200 more for the same graphics as my 360 is nuts and none of the exclusives that interest me even come out until well into 2007 so hopefully the price drops by than. I don't care about Blu-ray since I already have an HD-DVD player. Basically the whole thing was HUGE letdown, the only people who still think that PS3 is "real" next gen are blind ******s(you can figure out who they are) and Sony employees.

I have part time job at Target now. You cannot believe how many people buy ugly LCD monitor because it is "HD". They see ugly LCD next to pretty CRT and say wow, LCD is amazing. So they are happy to buy expensive LCD with worse picture than cheap CRT.

Really?

And what percentage would you say buy SDTV's compared to those LCDs? I bet if you had to answer honestly, those SDTV sales far outnumber the LCD's don't they? I bet those $100-$300 SDTV's practically fly off the shelves compared to the LCD's.

Yeah, PT Barnum was right, and there are people who will blow extrodinary amounts of money on products that aren't any better than much cheaper alternatives. The fact that Mercedes exists today is a testament to that.

But those extremely expensive products that don't offer a clear improvement and advantage over their competition are never the best selling products on the market, are they?

My friend, you have paid $800 for your system.

It's $200 of difference, there's two SKUs, just like the X360. And $100 difference if you compare the 20GB HDD X360 SKU to the 20GB HDD PS3 SKU.

And a $300 difference if you compare a Core 360 to the high-end PS3.

That comes out to $100-$300 difference unless my math is wrong.

Oh, my bad, ya that should help load times, great move by sony there, I'll give em a big pat on the back for the pre-installed HDD on all units. I really thought they'd aim for the $399 pricepoint.

Me too. I wonder what their focus group told them. Based on Ken's hints earlier on, it seems that they have planned the price all along. In any case, I'm glad they solved the heat and noise issues.

My eyes are on the games now. I will decide whether to get one when November nears. I don't think there will be overwhelming pre-orders :D

That's going to be an incredibly hard sale when the kiosks will show virtual no difference in game graphics. You'll have 2 systems side by side, each looking about equal to the other
depends if one game will be running at 1080p and the other at only 720p. :D
personally i dont have an issue with the price (i have a job, is this forum largly populated by children?) in saying that i prolly wont get a ps3 unless it is very quiet, i have my doubts wether its as good as they say

I don't know about you but I've enjoyed playing Oblivion on my 360 far more than watching PS3 cutscenes and FMV.

And from what I've seen of the PS3 graphically, it's no better than what I've seen on the 360. I haven't seen a single in-game screenshot that made me go "wow, that's better than anything on the 360."

But hey, if comparing almost completed games to a tech demo of a game that was over a year away from release makes you feel better about your choice, by all means use that excuse. Whatever works for you.

Ofocurse you will enjoy Oblivion more than watching PS3 cutscenes. You will enjoy more playing Oblivion than watching the mindblowing video of Rainbow Six posted in the forum today.

You are comparing two different personal experiences here.

Personally I am more impressed with the screenshots I ve seen so far than what I ve seen on 360. They seem more full and more alive than the games I ve seen so far on the 360.
I dont know...probably the animation? The physics? The motion blur?
But that could just be me.

Comparing unreleased 360 games with unreleased PS3 games still make me more impressed with what I see on the PS3.

Who knows? I may be dissapointed at the end, But for now I am excited.

That level of quality 360 displayied in last year's E3 showed nothing like what I saw today.

Also the game line up interest me more. I know I ll get FF, Heavenly Sword, GT, Tekken etc on PS3 . I wont get those on 360

Are we still talking about this ? The forum is under martial law now.

Hey Ninja Theory, where do I get a HS T-shirt or cap ?

Sony are my boys, but these is basically a disappoitment. $499 and I don't get WiFi or HDMI? Come on Sony. Are you trying to tell MS to lower the core pack to $249?

Also from this release, the 6-axis sensing technology in the controller
http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/060509be.pdf
The controller for PS3 has been created by refining and improving the world’s
most popular PlayStation® controller that has shipped more than several hundred million units worldwide, while inheriting its basic concept and design. The controller for PS3 employs breakthrough technology of high-precision, highly sensitive six-axis sensing system that does not require any devices other than the controller itself for seamless interactive operation, thus eliminating additional settings to TVs. With this technology, ways to enjoy PS3 will be further enhanced by accessing PS3 through the network, while retaining the six-axis sensing capability.

In addition to the “3-posture-axis” of roll, pitch and yaw, “3-dimension acceleration information (X, Y, and Z)” can be detected in high-precision and in real-time. In addition to standard key input available in existing controllers, more natural and more intuitive play will become possible as if the controller has become part of your body.

EDIT: Oh well "I told you so" thread

But why would you do that? That doesn't make any sense to make such a comparison. Other than trying to make things more apparent than they really are, for some reason.

Why would you compare a high end SKU to a base SKU, when you can compare low-end SKU to low-end SKU, same thing for the high end ones.

I think Sony should have made 1 full version for $599. I think lower price is to not scare customers but is silly because during introduction period people will pay very high prices and be happy.

Ok, PLEASE tell me how do I get on the Sony advertising team, I wanna make money from home too!!!!!! Of courge CGI movies look better than any gameplay, for example that motocross game looks like crap ingame and nowhere close to what we saw last year. X360 games were running on Apple G5s while most developers have had CELL and GeForce 7800/900 to work with for a good while already. I watched the whole thing and none of the ingame demos looked as good as Gears of War or Too Human. By the way I owned all 3 consoles this gen and I don't have anything against PS brand or Sony but from what I've seen so far PS3 is all hype.

now THAT would have been a dumb move. $600usd before games? OUCH

You're right that it will sell out in the introductary period, but how many potential hold-outs will see the high price and decide it's too expensive for them and buy a 360 instead? I think it's a good idea to have something priced reasonably within the stratosphere so people have more motivation to hold out for the system if it's not available at launch.

$599 is nothing for far too many people - Sony will have serious supply issues for at least a year even at this price. Maybe Microsoft should have launched at a higher price.

So to review:

2 SKUs: 60GB HDD SKU ($599) and 20GB HDD SKU ($499)

• No media ports on 20GB SKU; 60GB SKU has MemStick, SD, Compact Flash
• 1x Ethernet (1000BASE-T)
• No 2x HDMI; 1x in 60GB SKU, none in 20GB SKU (no 1080p? Talk about kick to PR crotch!)
• WiFi (802.11 b/g... no a?) on in 60GB SKU; no WiFi on 20GB SKU

Seems to be quite a few changes from last E3, especially in regards to some of their PR... like true HD & 2x HDMI.

This is just me, but I wish they would have either dumped a lot of the non-gaming related stuff and gone with a lower price or spent that money on adding to the gaming-focused hardware (like more memory, G80, another CELL, or whatever else). Still a very nice system, if not expensive. But they will sell them all, so why do they care about a poor chap like me!
