I think there will be one variation between the SKU's. One will be all black, and the other will be chrome and black. They didnt say anything official, but that is my guess based off the press shots.

specifically this one.

While I realize that the price is a good value considering all you're getting with the system, I can't help but think that Sony has in a way shot themself in the foot. A large portion of console sales are by people who buy a console when it's $200 or less, and it's going to take the PS3 a LONG time to get there... Not only that, but considering games should look about the same on both consoles, it'll be hard for Sony to really convince people the extra money is worth it. I may love the idea of Blu-Ray, but it's going to be difficult to convince even someone like me that the PS3 is REALLY worth paying the extra money... And the only reason I probably will is because of Final Fantasy. :(

So in conclusion, I have a feeling that this will really hurt Sony's marketshare because they have probably lost a fair amount of people who would like to own a Playstation but cannot or will not spend that kind of money.

I didn't see any mention of free online play on this presentation. They listed all the community features and friends list, ranking and so on as being free. But I must have missed the free online play. Maybe we're inferring based on their previous statements?

Anyways, looks like they want to make a big push to sell you media to download. So in that case, why would you pay $100 more to have more disk space if you don't plan to buy download media?

Probably at a later point, if all of Sony is working together, their DAP and PMP units will mount on the PS3 and you will be able to sync that media you've purchased onto those portable units.

So PS3 is going after the iPod as well as competing consoles.

I wonder if they arent just selling a limited supply to the ones who really need to be the first kid on the block with one, and then quickly lower prices once they can ramp up production. I remember hearing some complain that MS should have had higher prices initially too.

epic

599 version not only has 40GB more space, but also HDMI and wi-fi..so that sums up the difference
I love sony, but they seriously made me go WTF with their pricings and 2 SKU's. I really feel iffy about it.

Can you upgrade the cheaper version with HDMI and wifi. If not, how can you use the "core" version to watch BD-ROM content higher than 480p? (since they won't allow higher resolutions over analog connections)

wow, 2 SKU's is what I thought would happen, but no HDMI, wifi and memory card (what do you need the memory card for anyway?)

Those prices are too much imo.

WTF, that's ridiculous.

And the HDD must no longer be removeable? You wouldn't be able to buy the $500 SKU and upgrade to a bigger drive later?

How can they have no HDMI if the $500 SKU still has to support Blu-Ray video?

This would mean that Sony never has any intention of turning on ICT, so this could be a good thing for HD movie consumers, but this also means a possible boon for the "other side" as well.

Where did you get it? I guess it says it's just packaged (or "pre-installed") in the SKUs.
