Official GT5 discussion thread

ok, guys...now I am shocked!!

it happens, that I follow exactly Quaz's setup

default parallax is ridiculous. it's 5mm for max positive parallax on my 50" (except for cockpit view, the FOV is different and the FOV affect parallax), induce a big depth compression (it's like the horizon was 10-15cm beyond the screen)

my 3D setting for a true orthostereosopic experience (and full depth)

Cockpit view with "very narrow" mode
Convergence: 0.9
Parallax: (size screen dependant)
65" = 6 or 7 (6 if you have a low interocular distance like 6.5cm or less, 7 if your interocular is near 7cm)
60" = 7
55" = 7 or 8 (7 if you have a low interocular like 6.5cm or less, 8 if your interocular is near 7cm)
50" = 8 or 9 (8 if you have a low interocular like 6.5cm or less, 9 if your interocular is near 7cm)
46" = 9
42/40/37" = 10

and if possible play at a distance x1 diagonal of the screen for right FOV
it's agressive but very realist (and unforgettable) experience. i played lot of hours without problem
need a good TV with few ghosting (for me VT20 with contrast 30 and brightness 20 for hide ghosting)
this will be better if we would can OFF the HUD (depth conflict with some element of the dashboard when convergence is 0.9)

for other views (not cockpit) parallax 10 for all TV size and convergence 0.70
but it isn't orthostereoscopy or full depth

edit: if it's off-board maybe you can move the post

(BTW, thank you very much sir for the setup...it happens that I have a VT20 as well, but only 42" so I followed exactly your post)

And man, what can I say! Up to now, 3D was just a gimmick for me, a nice to have and show around feature...show 3D TV 5 minutes to a buddy, and then move on (because up to now, it wasn't very special...fun, but nothing that adds to the experience except some in your face explosions or something like this!)

In GT5 (but only with the setup Quaz proposes...NOT the standard setup) it is kind of mind blowing....because it really adds to the experience, it really adds to the feeling! First time, I thought for a brief moment that it is odd, when I changed back to 2D mode to check the difference. What strikes me the most...on the first track in arcade mode...I could ses that some of grass is 3D (yeah, I know...I am a bad driver...but I am like Skynet, and learn with geometric speed...so watch out ), which just looked (un)real...passing a car is so cool, sense of depth helps me to feel the curve and break point better - everything feels very natural (sorry, cannot explain it better).

The only thing that is kind of a downer: the HUD just does not fit there anymore, IMO. As Quaz suggested, I choose the very narrow cockpit view, where I could read the speedmeter...if the HUD would not block it.

I did not go through all the options yet: is there a possibility, to setup the HUD and reduce the amount shown on screen...for the ultra real experience in 3D...the real driving simulation, it would be perfect to have a pure HUD free possibility - would look unreal IMO.

Also I tested photomode - very good, gives me a feeling how a 3D FPS shooter could be (can't wait to check COD BO in 3D out).

GT5 3D is the first time, I am really happy that I bought the 3D version of my TV.

So for a noob saibot driver, is this game relatively easy with assists on? I'm thinking of getting a ps3+gt5 since the new nfs game is not really satisfying my car itch, but I'm not a hardcore driver so I'm wondering if gt5 will be over my head.
Had my first experience of GT5 last night with a Logitech Driving Force GT wheel. We mostly played Arcade games, all at Beginner level. At first it was very hard for me to control, and I switched from an Elise in the Arcade to an original Fiat 500 to get used to the steering! But after a few games, we got used to it and it was very noob friendly. Still played in typical GT fashion, whacking off cars to get an advantage, which is what casuals like us appreciate. Bought a Mazda MX-5 2nd hand for our first car and had a couple of tight Sunday Cup races, and then spent our ill-gotten spoils on upgrades to completely outpower the competition, which gave enough of a speed advantage that cocked-up corners wasn't a problem. By the end of the night, I was able to get some fancy cornering going, braking a touch to shift weight, in the manner I got quite good at in GT3.

The game is thus very forgiving at the entry level. You get a sense of driving with the steering wheel much better than an arcade racer, and you can enable the better realism as you progress and drive better. It does cover everyone.

Other impressions, the TGTT track has a stupid race to unlock it! Have the VW camper van race, fine, but not that to get the TGTT itself as it's so frustrating because a lot comes down to chance. If you get a knock from behind, that can end the race when it wasn't your fault. Visually we never encountered any chunky-pixel cars. Framerate looked smooth with the odd bit of tearing. Generally you're just looking at the road and don't really take in the scenery much, so for all those criticisms I could levy at some of the stills, in game it works. Doesn't look photorealistic, doesn't even have the same sense of 'wow' as GT3 did when it redefined game realism, but the game itself is fun, which is the main point.

I have a G25 steering wheel and I am looking for a cheep portable mount. I think someone posted one in here? I am not sure.

Can anyone suggest me which and where I can find so I can order?

I would appreciate it a lot because my wheel has been almost unused since I bought I cant find any comfortable place to mount it :(

And GT5 will certainly need it for the best experience

I'd recommend the wheel stand pro if you have a g25/g27. get the plus version because it's heavier and thus more stable.

happy for you
good setting is important in stereoscopy

COD haven't 3D setting. it's stupid (the advantage of 3D game is precisely the setting)
default setting isn't bad but not very good. with setting we would can do far better

Don't hate me if I don't add or request to be a friend... I just never play online. My friends list consists of a few of my personal buddies (the ones that own PS3's) but they're more casual gamers and don't play online that often either.

We usually create a dedicated XMB chatroom for the game. That way you can tap on the GAF or B3D user base without messing up you friends list.

Yo Billy, didn't expect the 3D experience to wow people given the rush. I guess I will visit Sony Style to check it out.

EDIT: What exactly did you try ? Karting, B-Spec, A-Spec, special events, blah ?

Wait for Nurburgring in night and transition to dawn and You'll get those wow moments, trust me ;]
Especially online with friends is a blast on this track.

And check better looking tracks like Madrit, Grand Valley, Tsukuba - they really good in terms of environments.

Is this exactly how it is called? I am trying to find it in Amazon or eBay but I cant find it.

From: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-gran-turismo-5-tech-analysis?page=4

There are clear signs that Polyphony Digital has been working on 3D support for Gran Turismo 5 for a long, long time - we know that because of the sheer volume of 3D demos we've seen at various consumer electronics trade shows. "3D was not something that was implemented at the last minute," Kazunori Yamauchi himself told Eurogamer this week. "We were working and testing with Sony two years ago."

Do you consider the Rennsport expensive, If not, I believe it is considered slightly more stable than the wheelstand pro.

I can also heartily recommend the Wheel Stand Pro.
Bought it for my Driving Force GT, as my coffee table is too low for comfortable driving.
It's very stable, well made and easily folded for storage. The adjustability is very good too.
I bought it direct from manufacturer, the delivery was very fast (4 week-days) and price very reasonable (€109 delivered to door).
I'd say the jump to a decent stand was almost as big as the jump from pad to wheel.

There doesn't seem to be many dealers for the stand, but buying direct seems to be very reliable and fast.

Hmm, yeah I don't really have the hours anymore, but what the hell I went for it anyways, snagged that same Amazon ps3 black Friday deal as well, along with way too many other games that I will likely have no time to play, but i couldn't resist the deals :) I figure this new slim should be the 40/45nm model as well so bonus.

Bah, having no premium for the '87 GNX bugs me more :) Does standard maybe in some cases mean no interior, but still having a nice exterior model? Anyways this game should sell bucket loads of copies so I'm sure more premium models will be coming.

Here's all you need to know if you want to have "fun" with GT5 without major investment. Just go through the license tests with all of your normal assists on, and then watch the examples (with narration) and make your way through the tests. These won't take long, maybe at most an hour a piece (unless you plan to get golds) and you'll have learned a lot about driving in general.

I found my old Driving Force Pro wheel again. I had to take the whole thing apart just to get some buttons unstuck. But it's working fine now. Rearranged some furniture, and now I have the perfect driving position. All well worth the trouble. Now I just have practice to get as good with it as I'm with the DS3.

Actually for most tests you're much better off with no traction control. As it turns itself back on each test I keep thinking 'that doesn't feel right', and then I remember.

Almost all of the lower level tests are forgiving enough to get golds with Traction Control on relatively easily if you race them a few times, at least for the average user.

For someone who isn't well versed with sim racers, I wouldn't recommend turning off traction control, since golds wouldn't really be a primary interest for them :)

hm, is this true?

http://www.gamersmint.com/gran-turismo-5-level-40-advanced-damage-modelling-video-will-shock-you

you need to reach level 40 for full damage?!?!?
what the...

no wonder, reviews think that damage is rather poor...because reaching level 40 to get full damage is kind of weird to be honest?
Why Polyphony?
Put so much effort into a feature, lot's of people will simple miss?!?

I'm pretty sure they did this to gradually ramp up the difficulty for races. Adding damage that has more impact on your race later in the game helps to give the player "progression". It doesn't really matter to high level players since they'll probably make far fewer mistakes. I think it was a wise choice to bring in a more casual audience. Certainly a better solution than a crazy rewind feature, at least.

It kind of backfired though considering how much the reviews have missed :(

All reviews appear to be "hasty" and they didnt do the game's justice

Eh, I don't think it backfired at all. The game is still going to sell amazingly well. The only folks those reviews are really going to matter to is the 'core' forum goers and folks who want to find things to talk about. Mainstream folks know about IGN and GameInformer. That's really all they'll care about, even if they do really give a damn about that.

Well I hope you are right and that these reviews wont affect the buying behavior. There are some awfully misinforming reviews out there.
